  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to analyse the facial changes and factors contributing to then after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy of mandibular prognathism. Materials and Methods : Forty patients with Class III dental and skeletal malocclusion who were treated with bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy were reviewed. Frontal and lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken preoperatively, immediate postoperatively and more than six months postoperatively in each patient. After tracing the cephalometric radiographs, various parameters were measured. Results : 1. Gonial angle at postoperative two days was decreased about $10.4^{\circ}$ than preoperatively and gonial angle at postoperative six months was increased about $6.8^{\circ}$ than postoperative two days. So, gonial angle at postoperative six months was decreased about $3.6^{\circ}$ than preoperative gonial angle. 2. Facial height postoperative two days was decreased about 0.8mm than preoperatively and facial height at postoperative six months was decreased about 0.7mm than postoperative two days. So, facial height at postoperative six months was decreased about 1.5mm than preoperative facial height. 3. Mandibular width postoperative two days was decreased about 1.0mm than preoperatively and mandibular width at postoperative six months was increased about 1.8mm than postoperative two days. So, mandibular width at postoperative six months was decreased about 2.8mm than preoperative mandibular width. 4. Amount of set back and mandibular plane angle were not influencing on relapse degree. Conclusion : It is thought that bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy in mandibular prognathic patients is effective to improve long face and steep gonial angle. More prudent operation and careful postoperative management is required to maintain stable face postoperatively. Further research for soft tissue changes and factors which are related with relapse is needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the 12-week horse riding exercise effect on the locomotion of a body and bilateral balance and flexion/extension of trunk during the sit-to-stand(STS) in elementary and middle school students. One-hundred eleven participants were divided into three groups. Each group was subject to a different horse riding exercise: control group(n = 36), 1 time/week group(n=37), and 3 times/week group(n=38). Two-way repeated ANOVA was used to compare weight transfer time(WTT), trunk flexion velocity(TFV), trunk extension velocity(TEV), mean rising index(MRI), mean weight asymmetry( MWA) among the groups, and STS changes in before and after 12 weeks. There was a group interaction in WTT, TFV, TEV, MRI, and MWA with different responses to horse riding exercise participation. There was a significant increase in 1 time/week group and 3 times/week group of WTT, TFV, TEV, and MRI. Additionally, MWA(an index of a capacity for bilateral balance) in lower extremity was decreased in 3 times/week group. It seems that horse riding exercise positively affected musculoskeletal function of the trunk and lower extremity by accelerating locomotion and bilateral balance.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the development of laterality and bilateral motor abilities measured with respect to various rhythm movements in upper extremity of mentally retared children. The development of laterality was measured by a survey of dominace-hand. The bilateral motor abilities were assessed by means of a tentative rhythm beat test of hands. One hundred sixty eighty subjects with special education needs shose age ranged from 7 to 18 years old were used for an experimental group. Fity nine normal children whose age ranged from 3 to 6 years old were also chosen as a control group. The major findings were a follows: 1. The development of lateral dominace-hand in mentally retared children differed from that of normal subjects with as increase in chronological age; the degree of the attainment of lateral dominance - hand was 75 percest of the mean level of the normal children. Though normal children establish a dominance - hand by ths age of years old, meatally retarded children are likely to show 57 percent of normal development at the age of 7 through 9 years old and 65 percent of normal development at the age of 16 through 18 years old. 2. A greater delay in mentally retarded was found through a rhythm test which was development to assess bilateral motor abilities in upper extremity. A closser relationship betwin chronological age and the development of bilateral motor abilities in mentally retared children was found. 3. In view of these findings, it was indicated that bilateral motor abilities of the retarded and non-retarded children were significantly correlated to the acqusition of dominance-hand.

  • Purpose: This study compared the radiographic and clinical outcomes of simultaneous bilateral short scarf osteotomy with those of unilateral short scarf osteotomy in hallux valgus patients. Materials and Methods: The authors undertook a retrospective chart and radiographic review between January 2015 and June 2017 to identify 15 patients (30 cases, group A) who underwent a simultaneous bilateral short scarf osteotomy. The patients were matched with 30 patients (30 cases, group B) with a unilateral short scarf osteotomy. No significant preoperative differences were observed between the two groups in terms of age, gender, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) hallux score, and radiographic parameters. The clinical and radiographic follow-up was carried out at three months and one year. Results: Hallux valgus angles in groups A and B were reduced from the mean preoperative values of 32.5° and 34.7° to 12.5° and 12.2° at 12 months, respectively. The first-second intermetatarsal angles in groups A and B were also reduced from the mean preoperative values of 14.2° and 16.5° to 7.4° and 7.3° at 12 months, respectively. No significant inter-group differences in radiographic outcomes were observed. After three months, the patients in group A reported significantly worse mean pain and functional scores than group B. The mean AOFAS hallux score was higher in group B at the three-month follow-up, but this difference disappeared at the one-year followup. Conclusion: Simultaneous bilateral surgery can be offered to patients with a hallux valgus deformity requiring correction. On the other hand, they should be informed of the long recovery period.

  • Bilateral filter (BF) is a nonlinear filter for sharpness enhancement and noise removal. The BF performs the function by the two Gaussian filters, the domain filter and the range filter. To apply the BF to infrared (IR) small target detection, the standard deviation of the two Gaussian filters need to be changed adaptively between the background region and the target region. This paper presents a new BF with the adaptive standard deviation based on the analysis of the edge component of the local window, also having the variable filter size. This enables the BF to perform better and become more suitable in the field of small target detection Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is robust and efficient than the conventional methods.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the differences abdominal muscles activities of according to hip adductor contraction levels 20% (mild), 50% (moderate), and 70% (strong) of MVIC on during bilateral lower extremity raising exercise on supine. Methods: The subjects of the study were a total of 39 persons including 23 healthy males and 16 females, who performed bilateral lower extremity raising exercise in 20%, 50%, 70% MVIC hip contraction. Muscle activities were measured by using S-EMG in RA (rectus abdominis), IO (internal oblique), and EO (external oblique). Results: Muscle activity of the internal oblique abdominal muscle and external oblique abdominal muscle, their activities were also greatest with the adductor contraction size at 70% and there was statistically significant difference when compared with the adductor contraction size at 20% and 50% (p<0.05). As for the rectus abdominis muscle according to the size of contraction of the adductor was greatest at 70%, without statistically significant difference (p>0.05). Conclusion: bilateral lower extremity raising with strong hip joint adductor contraction was effective exercise to strengthen abdominal muscles. If subjects could not perform strong hip adductor contraction, moderate contraction is effective abdominal muscle contraction exercise. The contraction size of the adductor is small, weak contraction may trigger middle level contraction and therefore appropriate application of the exercise program of bilateral leg raising may result in great effect as a lumbar stabilization exercise.

  • The primary purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of bilateral Free Trade Agreements on international trade volume of bulk shipment at the port of Busan in Korea using the Gravity Model. Most recently, the total of 15 Korea's FTAs have been enforced since Korea-Chile FTA in 2004 and more than 50 countries became member of Korea's FTAs. Therefore, aggregated trade volume of Korea's FTA members out of the total trade volume in Korea increased from 25% in 2011 to 67% in 2015. Five Korea's bilateral FTA members are concerned as experimental group while top 10 foreign countries base on trade volume of bulk shipment are applied to the model as control group and panel data was used in this study. According to the results, bilateral FTA, GDP and population have positive impacts on trade volume of bulk shipment at the port of Busan. On the other hand, distance between Korea and its trade partner has negative impact. In examining Hausman test and LR test, the random effect model is statistically more appropriate than the fixed effect model for this study.

  • We propose a retouching method that converts a general photography to a watercolor painting image using bilateral filtering and mean shift segmentation which are mostly used in image processing. The first step is to weaken high frequency components of the image, while preserving the edge of image using the bilateral filtering. And after that we perform DoG(Difference of Gradient) edge extraction and mean shift segmentation respectively from the bilateral filtered image. The DoG edge extraction is performed using luminance component of the image whose RGB color space is transformed into CIELAB space. Experimental result shows that our method can be applied to various types of image and bring better result, especially against the photo taken in daylight.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between rotational disk displacement (DD) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the dentoskeletal morphology. Methods: Women aged > 17 years were included in this study. Each subject had a primary complaint of malocclusion and underwent routine cephalometric examinations. They were divided into five groups according to the findings on sagittal and coronal magnetic resonance images of their TMJs: bilateral normal disk position, bilateral anterior DD with reduction (ADDR), bilateral rotational DD with reduction (RDDR), bilateral anterior DD without reduction (ADDNR), and bilateral rotational DD without reduction (RDDNR). Twenty-three cephalometric variables were analyzed, and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to evaluate differences in the dentoskeletal morphology among the five groups. Results: Patients with TMJ DD exhibited a hyperdivergent pattern with a retrognathic mandible, unlike those with a normal disk position. These specific skeletal characteristics were more severe in patients exhibiting DD without reduction than in those with reduction, regardless of the presence of rotational DD. Rotational DD significantly influenced horizontal and vertical skeletal patterns only in the stage of DD with reduction, and the mandible exhibited a more backward position and rotation in patients with RDDR than in those with ADDR. However, there were no significant dentoskeletal differences between ADDNR and RDDNR. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that rotational DD of TMJ plays an important role in the dentoskeletal morphology, particularly in patients showing DD with reduction.
