This paper shows optimal dimensioning for the corner combined footings to obtain the most economical contact surface on the soil (optimal area), due to an axial load, moment around of the axis "X" and moment around of the axis "Y" applied to each column. The proposed model considers soil real pressure, i.e., the pressure varies linearly. The classical model is developed by trial and error, i.e., a dimension is proposed, and after, using the equation of the biaxial bending is obtained the stress acting on each vertex of the corner combined footing, which must meet the conditions following: 1) Minimum stress should be equal or greater than zero, because the soil is not withstand tensile. 2) Maximum stress must be equal or less than the allowable capacity that can be capable of withstand the soil. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the validity of the optimization techniques to obtain the minimum area of corner combined footings under an axial load and moments in two directions applied to each column.
A numerical model that can simulate the nonlinear behavior of ultra high strength fiber-reinforced concrete (UHSFRC) structures subject to monotonic loadings is introduced. Since engineering material properties of UHSFRC are remarkably different from those of normal strength concrete and engineered cementitious composite, classification of the mechanical characteristics related to the biaxial behavior of UHSFRC, from the designation of the basic material properties such as the uniaxial stress-strain relationship of UHSFRC to consideration of the bond stress-slip between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete with fiber, is conducted in this paper in order to make possible accurate simulation of the cracking behavior in UHSFRC structures. Based on the concept of the equivalent uniaxial strain, constitutive relationships of UHSFRC are presented in the axes of orthotropy which coincide with the principal axes of the total strain and rotate according to the loading history. This paper introduces a criterion to simulate the tension-stiffening effect on the basis of the force equilibriums, compatibility conditions, and bond stress-slip relationship in an idealized axial member and its efficiency is validated by comparison with available experimental data. Finally, the applicability of the proposed numerical model is established through correlation studies between analytical and experimental results for idealized UHSFRC beams.
Dams are important structures for management of water supply for irrigation or drinking, flood control, and electricity generation. In seismic regions, the structural safety of concrete gravity dams is important due to the high potential of life and economic loss if they fail. Therefore, the seismic analysis of existing dams in seismically active regions is crucial for predicting responses of dams to ground motions. In this paper, earthquake response of concrete gravity dams is investigated using the finite element (FE) method. The FE model accounts for dam-water-foundation rock interaction by considering compressible water, flexible foundation effects, and absorptive reservoir bottom materials. Several uncertainties regarding structural attributes of the dam and external actions are considered to obtain the fragility curves of the dam-water-foundation rock system. The structural uncertainties are sampled using the Latin Hypercube Sampling method. The Pine Flat Dam in the Central Valley of Fresno County, California, is selected to demonstrate the methodology for several limit states. The fragility curves for base sliding, and excessive deformation limit states are obtained by performing non-linear time history analyses. Tensile cracking including the complex state of stress that occurs in dams was also considered. Normal, Log-Normal and Weibull distribution types are considered as possible fits for fragility curves. It was found that the effect of the minimum principal stress on tensile strength is insignificant. It is also found that the probability of failure of tensile cracking is higher than that for base sliding of the dam. Furthermore, the loss of reservoir control is unlikely for a moderate earthquake.

An analytical finite element approach to nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete shear walls with opening under monotonic loading was presented in this paper. In order to achieve the objectives of present paper, the orthogonal anisotropic models for cracked reinforced concrete element based on smeared crack concept were used as the nonlinear material models of biaxial state of stress. The stiffness of cracked concrete was evaluated through the combined use of tension and compression stiffness models in and parallel directions of crack, respectively and shear transfer effect due to the aggregate interlocking at crack surface. The stress and strain of reinforcement in concrete was evaluated using the average stress and average strain relation with bond effect. based on smeared crack concept. The diagonal reinforcing bar was modeled using truss element with bond effect. A special significance of diagonal reinforcement near opening was given to the shear wall with opening and an effective distribution of diagonal reinforcement was presented in order to give an ultimate strength increment as well as a crack control.
Modulus measurements in vertical boreholes under simulated horizontal in-situ stress conditions were performed on laboratory rock specimens. The experimental program was focused on the examination of modulus change with the variation of the orientation, magnitude and ratios of horizontal biaxial stresses. The experiment results show that the modulus increases when the magnitude of the horizontal stresses increases. The modulus measured in the minimum principal direction increased when the ratio between the horizontal principal stresses increased, while the modulus measured in the maximum principal direction decreased when the ratio of the horizontal principal stresses increased. These were caused by the tangential stresses that vary depending upon the magnitude of horizontal stresses, the applied pressure and the orientation of measurement. Also, the measured moduli were determined under tensile stress, compressive stress, or both stresses. Thus, the stress effect on deformation modulus should be considered, not only for the interpretation of the results of borehole deformability measurement, but also for the design of underground gas storage and pressure tunnel, and for the interpretation of tunnel monitoring.

A non-quadratic anisotropic strain rate potential was introduced as a conjugate potential of the yield stress potential Yld2000-2d to describe anisotropic behavior of sheet metals, in particular, aluminum alloy sheets under plane stress state. This strain-rate potential takes into account the anisotropic yield stresses and R-values measured along the directions measured at 0, 45 and 90 degrees from the rolling direction, as well as the balanced biaxial yield stress and strain-rate ratio. The convexity of the strain-rate potential was completely proven. The strain-rate potential was applied for two anisotropic aluminum alloy sheets, AA6022-T4 and AA2090-T3. The results verified that the strain rate potential properly described the anisotropic behavior of aluminum alloy sheets and was closely conjugate of Yld2000-2d under the plane stress state.

A finite element method has been developed to study the material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrte structures. Concrete behavior under the biaxial state of stress is represented by a nonlinear constitutive relationship which incorporates tensile cracking, tensile stiffening effect between cracks and the strain-softening phenomenon beyond the maximum compressive strength. The concrete model used is based upon nonlinear elasticity by assuming concrete to be an orthotropic material and modeled as equivalent uniaxial stress-strain constitutive relationship using equivalent uniaxial strain. The streel reinforcement is assumed to be in a uniaxial stress state and is modeled as a bilinear, elasto-plastic material with strain hardening approximating the Bauschinger effect. In plane stress state, R.C. beams is modeled as a quadratic element that has two degrees of freedom in each node. And this results of finite element analysis are compared with the experimential results of midspan deflection, stresses and strains.

Creep analysis takes much more time than elastic or elastic-plastic analysis. In this study, we conducted elastic and elastic-plastic analysis and compared the results with creep analysis results. In the elastic analysis, we used primary stress, which can be classified by the $M{\alpha}-tangent$ method and stress intensities recommended in the ASME code. In the elastic-plastic analysis, we calculated the parameters recommended in the R5 code. For the FE models, a bending load, uniaxial load, and biaxial load were applied to the cross shaped welded plate, and a bending load and internal pressure were applied to the elbow pipe. To investigate the element size sensitivity, we conducted FE analysis for various element sizes for the cases where bending load was applied to the cross shaped welded plate. There was no significant difference between the creep stress and the alternative methods; however, in the $M{\alpha}-tangent$ method, the results were affected by the element size.
The yield criterion, or called yield function, plays an important role in the study of plastic working of a sheet because it governs the plastic deformation properties of the sheet during plastic forming process. In this paper, we propose a modified version of previous anisotropic yield function (Trans. Mater. Process., 31(4) 2022, pp. 214-228) based on J2 and J3 stress invariants. The proposed anisotropic yield model has the 6th-order of stress components. The modified version of the anisotropic yield function in this study is as follows. f(J20,J30) ≡ (J20)3 + α(J30)2 + β(J20)3/2 × (J30) = k6 The proposed anisotropic yield function well explains the anisotropic plastic behavior of various sheets such as aluminum, high strength steel, magnesium alloy sheets etc. by introducing the parameters α and β, and also exhibits both symmetrical and asymmetrical yield surfaces. The parameters included in the proposed model are determined through an optimization algorithm from uniaxial and biaxial experimental data under proportional loading path. In this study, the validity of the proposed anisotropic yield function was verified by comparing the yield surface shape, normalized uniaxial yield stress value, and Lankford's anisotropic coefficient R-value derived with the experimental results. Application for the proposed anisotropic yield function to AA6016-T4 aluminum and DP980 sheets shows symmetrical yielding behavior and to AZ31B magnesium shows asymmetric yielding behavior, it was shown that the yield locus and yielding behavior of various types of sheet materials can be predicted reasonably by using the proposed anisotropic yield function.
The yield criterion, or called yield function, plays an important role in the study of plastic working of a sheet because it governs the plastic deformation properties of the sheet during plastic forming process. In this paper, we propose a novel anisotropic yield function useful for describing the plastic behavior of various anisotropic sheets. The proposed yield function includes the anisotropic version of the second stress invariant J2 and the third stress invariant J3. The anisotropic yield function newly proposed in this study is as follows. F(J2)+ αG(J3)+ βH (J2 × J3) = km The proposed yield function well explains the anisotropic plastic behavior of various sheets by introducing the parameters α and β, and also exhibits both symmetrical and asymmetrical yield surfaces. Application for the proposed anisotropic yield function to aluminum sheet shows symmetrical yielding behavior and to pure titanium sheet shows asymmetric yielding behavior, it was shown that the yield curve and yield behavior of various types of sheet materials can be predicted reasonably by using the proposed new yield anisotropic function.
