  • This study investigated the effects of various cultivation pots on Betula platyphylla var. japonica seedlings in order to select suitable pots for the production of healthy seedlings for the ecological revegetation. We used six types of the pots natural pot, natural pot with inside 5 mm width root turning bump, natural pot with inside 10 mm width root turning bump, negative-phototropism pot, negative-phototropism pot with inside 5 mm width root turning bump, and negative-phototropism pot with inside 10 mm width root turning bump. As greenhouse cultivation provided a high level of control of irrigation and temperature, the seedlings did not show any significant differences in plant height, number of branches, and diameter at root collar, but showed a significant difference in root growth among the different types of pots. The root growth was best in the negative-phototropism pot. In the negative-phototropism, the roots grew in a vertical shape, while they grew abnormally in a spiral shape in the natural pots. In outdoor cultivation, the growth of seedlings showed significant differences according to container types. The seedlings grown in specially manufactured negative-phototropism pots were most excellent in all of the height, number of branches, diameter at root collar and root growth. As for the seedlings grown in the negative-phototropism pots, their roots grew vertically and thus their rooting was well established after they were transplanted outdoor. A size of less than 5 mm ridge installed in the negative-phototropism was found to be appropriate for the seedling growth. These results showed that the negative-phototropism pot would be best suitable for the growth of Betula platyphylla var. japonica seedlings and for the production of seedling for ecological revegetation.

  • Radial immunodiffusion, rocket immunoelectrophoresis, and Boyden procedure have been employed as quantitative analysis of pollen proteins in a systematic investigation of selected amentiferous plant taxa. Data presented here are continued and supplementary to the previous qualitative analysis of immunoprecipitin systems for the same purpose. Although the number of taxa tested has been limited, the serological evidence indicates that the Betulaceae has the greatest similarity to the Fagaceae, next to the Juglandaceae, the least to the Salicaceae, when antisera against Alnus hirsuta and Betula platyphylla var. japonica were used for tests. Within the Betulaceae Alnus and Betula show greatly similar affinities together, but less similar to the rest of genera: Carpinus, Carya and Corylus. When antisera against Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, and Q. glauca were used for tests, the following decreasing order to serological affinities was obtained: Quercus Alnus, Betula Carpinus, Carya, Corylus Juglans, Pterocarya Populus. Overall serological data come closer to supportint the classification systems of Cronquist, Takhtajan, and Hutchinson; but less of Thorne and Bessey. In addition this investigation indicated that pollen, with its high protein content, provided an excellent source of extractable antigens for serosystematic researches.

  • A review of taxonomic treatments of the amentiferous plant taxa reveals diverse classification. It appears to be necessary to investigate new characteristics and attempt to determine the significance of these characteristics in terms of amentiferous systematics. Serological techniques have been empolyed in a systematic investigation of selected taxa of the Amentiferae: Betulaceae, Fagaceae, Juglandaceae, Myricaceae, and Salicaceae. Data by qualitative analysis of pollen proteins, double immunodiffusion and conventional immunoelectrophoresis, have proved to be valuable in delimitation of taxa tested. When the antisera against Alnus hirsuta, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, Q. glauca were tested; Alnus and Betula have the greatest protein similarity to one another; and next to the rest of betulaceous genera. Relatively strong protein similarity obtained with most representatives of Quercus and Fagus when reacted with antisera against Alnus and Betula is very much in contrast to the weak protein similarity obtained for the genera of Juglandaceae, Myricaceae, particularly of Salicaceae Tested with the same antisera. When Quercus antisera were used for various genera, the weakest protein similarity was obtained with Populus.

  • This study was conducted to develop new fertilizers which can be applied to various environmental conditions. Fertilizers with different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and different types and amount of combined fertilizers were used on 1-1 seedlings of Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis, Quercus acutissima, and Betula platyphylla var. japonica. Biomass, specific leaf area (SLA) and chlorophyll content of foliage were measured. Biomass of foliage, shoot, and root showed no differences among fertilization treatments. Biomass of double treatments of solid-combination fertilizer and UF combination fertilizer increased whereas those of triple treatments decreased. SLA ($\textrm{cm}^2$/g) of P. densiflora fo. the 6:4:1 treatment and L. leptolepis for the 3:4:1 treatment showed the highest with 59.2 and 110.0, respectively, but those of Q. arutissima and B. platyphylla var. japonica for the control showed the higher than other treatments with 207.5 and 202.0, respectively. Chlorophyll contents (mg/g) in the foliage of P. densiflora and L. leptolepis fertilized with the 6:4:1 treatment were 0.222 and 0.127, respectively, and these contents were higher than those of the 3:4:1 treatment with 0.211 and 0.082, respectively. These results suggested that the increased nitrogen fertilization had an effort on increase of chlorophyll contents.

  • According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), all parties have to submit the national GHG inventory report. Estimating carbon stocks and changes in Land Use, Land-Use Changes and Forestry (LULUCF) needs an activity data and emission factors. So this study was conducted to develop carbon emission factor for Robinia pseudoacacia L., Betula platyphylla var. japonica, and Liriodendron tulipifera. As a result, the basic wood density ($g/cm_3$) was 0.64 for R. pseudoacacia, 0.55 for B. platyphylla, and 0.46 for L. tulipifera. Biomass expansion factor was 1.47 for R. pseudoacacia, 1.30 for B. platyphylla, and 1.24 for L. tulipifera. Root to shoot ratio was 0.48 for R. pseudoacacia, 0.29 for B. platyphylla, and 0.23 for L. tulipifera. Uncertainty of estimated emission factors on three species ranged from 3.39% to 27.43% within recommended value (30%) by IPCC. We calculated carbon stock and change using these emission factors. Three species stored carbon in forest and net $CO_2$ removal was $1,255,398\;t\;CO_2/yr$ during 5 years. So we concluded that our result could be used as emission factors for national GHG inventory report on forest sector.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth and physiological response of shade intolerant and intermediate tree seedlings to enhanced UV-$B_{BE}$(biologically effective UV-B) radiation. The seedlings of Betula platyphylla var. japonica Hara(shade intolerant species) and Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance(shade intermediate species) were treated with one of the three levels of UV-$B_{BE}$ dosages - ambient UV-$B_{BE}$, ambient+3.2, and ambient+$5.2\;KJ\;m^{-2}day^{-1}$) for 14 weeks in the field condition. Height and root collar diameter growth, leaf area, and biomass production of the seedlings of two species were reduced by enhanced UV-B radiation. Leaf stomatal resistance to water vapor of the F. rhynchophylla seedling was increased by the UV-B increment. The reductions in total chlorophyll and carotenoid were more apparent in the F. rhynchophylla than B. platyphylla seedling. There was no statistically significant changes in the concentration of UV-B absorbing compound($A_{300}$) in the leaves of the two species among the UV-B treatment. However the $A_{300}$ tented to be increased in F. rhynchophylla by enhanced UV-B radiation. These results indicate that the growth and the physiological and biochemical responses between B. platyphylla and F. rhynchophylla were different to enhanced UV-B environment.

  • Examined the color of ten species of Korean broadleaf trees were experimented based on $L^*a^*b^*$ values and color difference (${\Delta}E^*ab$) between sapwood and heartwood, in order to analyze and determine the color, a critical visual and decorative factor of the broadleaf trees that can be used for making woodcraft and furniture. According to the result, the entire sapwood and heartwood, except the heartwood of Populus tomentiglandulosa, showed positive value in whiteness, redness, and yellowness and therefore contained yellow and red. None of the species showed color difference between sapwood and heartwood that was trace (0~0.5), slight (0.6~1.5), or very much; whereas Populus maximowiczii showed noticeable color difference (1.5~3.0); Salix koreensis, Betula platyphylla var japonica, Carpinus laxiflora, and Castanea crenata, appreciable and Populus tomentiglandulosa, Juglans mandshurica, Betula schmidtii, Alnus japonica, and Quercus variabilis, much. The color characteristics of heartwood and sapwood of the ten Korean broadleaf tree species studied in this research can be used as basic data for woodcraft or furniture production, especially when replacing foreign woods with Korean ones, and also contribute to convergence researches for science, engineering, and design fields.

  • Betula pendula and B. platyphylla var. japonica seedlings and/or grafts growing inside and outside of a plastic-greenhouse were treated with growth regulators to induce flowering at early stages of seedling and graft developments. The seedlings began to develop female catkins visibly in eight to nine months after seeding and in five months after the first treatment of growth regulators. Thirty three percents of the seedlings grown under controlled environment in the plastic-greenhouse with sufficient nutrient supply developed female catkins both in control plants and in the plants treated with IAA, $GA_3$ and kinetin, while none on the control plants grown in the field showed any sign of the development of floral organs. Sixty seven percents of the seedlings treated with ABA and SADH grown in the Plastic-greenhouse developed female catkins. All the seedlings treated with 6.24 mM of SADH developed female catkins. SADH treatment to 2-5 year old seedlings and grafts of birch had a tendency of positive effect on inducing and increasing the flowering of the two birch species.

  • The tissue water relation parameters were compared to assess the resistance of representative three gardening tree species to water stress. Zelkova serrata showed a strong resistant characteristics to water stress compared to Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Liriodendron turipifera. Turgor pressure at turgor loss point in Z. serrata was -2.54 MPa, whereas those of 5. platyphylla var, japonica and L. turipifera were -2.24 and -2.03, respectively. In addition, Z. serrata showed less reduction in pressure potential to decrease of free water content in the leaf tissue, indicating effective shrinking of the cell wall compared to others. On the other hand, L. turipifera indicated a weak resistance to water stress, which has low turgor potential at turgor loss point and cell wall elasticity. These results suggest that Z. serrata would be suitable for relatively dry conditions of location and humid conditions of location would be suitable for L. dendronas plantation.

  • This study was conducted to compare ozone sensitivity among Betula sp. by measuring visible foliar injuries and growth responses. Four Betula sp.(B. costata, B. davurica, B. platyphylla var.japonica and B. ermani) grown in the greenhouse, were transplanted in the plastic pots. One-year-old seedlings of four Betula sp. exposed to relatively high ozone concentration(100 ppb) for 8 h day$^{-1}$ for 5 weeks in fumigation chamber. We measured visible injuries, leaf numbers and leaf areas at the end of experiments, and growth effects were evaluated by measuring the relative growth rate(RGR) of height and diameter and the dry weights of leaf, stem and root once a week. Four Betula species showed the significant differences for growth responses by the ozone treatment. Growths of three species, except for B. ermani, were significantly reduced by the $O_3$ exposure. B. costata with leaf senescence at the early growing stage and B. davurica indicated highest visible foliar injury rate may be the sensitive species at the 100 ppb ozone concentration. Although the growth rate of B. ermani was reduced by 100 ppb ozone exposure at the early growing stage, B. ermani may be a tolerance species that recover the growth rate with the adaptation for the high ozone concentration.
