  • Transgenic tobacco plants expressing calmodulin derivative($lys{\rightarrow}ile$ 115 calmodulin) and hygromycin resistance genes or hygromycin resistance gene alone(control) were generated by Agrobacterium-mediated DNA transfer. Seeds obtained from the transgenic plants($F_o$) were tested for resistance to hygromycin and the expected 3 : 1 ratio was observed. The expression of calmodulin derivative in the tobacco plants was identified by a combined method of Western blot and Chemiluminescence. The effects of surface sterilizers on the germiation of seeds from transgenic tobacco plants were tested in Murashige and Skoog agar medium. Seeds obtained from transgenic tobacoo plants expressing the calmodulin derivative showed no fungi contamination with normal germination by treating with sterilized water alone or sodium hypochlorite(2% effective chlorine). In contrast, seeds from the control transgenic tobacco plants showed severe contamination with fungi by treating with sterilized water alone and showed no contamination with normal germination by treating with sodium hypochlorite(2% chlorine). The effects of calcium concentration on the germination of seeds from transgenic tobacco plants were tested in Murashige and Skoog agar medium. Seeds obtained from transgenic tobacco plants expressing the calmodulin derivative showed better germination frequency than that of the control transgenic tobacco seeds in the medium containing 30 mM $CaCl_2$. The data raise the possibility that the expression of calmodulin derivative gene in tobacco plants could increase adaptability of the seeds to environmental stresses.

  • The current research is designed to analyze sterilization effects on mulberries in terms of storage temperature and storage period after treating with tap water (TW), electrolyzed water (EW) and aqueous chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$). The treated $ClO_2$ concentrations are 10, 50, 100 and 200 ppm. In each concentration, the mulberries are soaked for 30 seconds respectively. The sterilization effects are being compared at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) and at $4^{\circ}C$, respectively. And the enzyme activity related to quality is also being investigated and analyzed about for browning inhibition effects. Microbial sterilizing power increases more in treating plots with EW and $ClO_2$ than treating plot with TW. Futhermore sterilizing power of $ClO_2$ increased sharply on high concentration treatment plot as well. Sterilization effects of $ClO_2$ during storage time are better at cold temperature. Pictures taken from scanning electron microscope reveal that there are no microbes in sterilizing solutions treatment plots. From measurement of the enzyme activity, it is concluded that activities decrease more in sterilizing solutions treatment plots as comparing with TW treated plot during the time. The amount of total polyphenolics decrease with the time passing and EW and $ClO_2$ treatment shows less contents than TW treatment. Thus, EW and $ClO_2$ treatment of mulberris are considered as method to improve safety by reducing total plate count and to contribute to quality maintenance and to extend storage time.

  • This studies have been carried out for several years to develop more better urea resin treating process on silk textiles which may be better crease resist without harming on the textile touch feeling. Specially, this paper payed attention to minimize the necessary formaldehyde content to be condensed with urea and created a new processing method which is named as Homo Metalic Urea Resin found to be better than urea resin process. The obtained results are as followings. 1. The prepared urea resin was found to be smell-less because of minimized formaldehyde content is the least than any other reports carried out before than this. 2. A new type of urea resin has been created by using uric 2incchloride and formaldehyde which is named as Homo Metalic Urea Resin. This processing method may carry both weighing process and urea resin process. 3. Crease resistance, stiffness and bulkiness were increased through such resin treats. Homo metalic urea resin process showed better results than the urea resin process. 4. Spun silk or low twisted silk have shown better crease resistance than raw silk or high twisted silk upon the both resin treats. 5. Both treat methods were found to be good economical feasibility upon the silk finishing process. 6. Tenacity and elongation of silk fibers were found to decrease some what because of grafting or weighing results. 7. Wooly silk has been also created with specific urea resin process. Such silk could be obtained by formaldehyde gas treat with urea soaken silk in a chamber, which induced to form scale on the surface of silk fibers.

  • This study, which was tarried out to investigate the characteristics of permeation rates and fouling phenomena in drinking-water treating processes with MF membrane, showed that pressure drop was dependent on the length of membrane module and operating pressure; the pressure drop increased with the length of membrane module and operating pressure, operation at a relatively low pressure(0.5kg/$cm^2$) is better than that at a relatively (2.0kg/$cm^2$), since high operating pressure accelerates the clogging. In case of out-in permeation type, almost same flux was obtained after a certain operating time regardless of membrane length and operating pressure. In order to understand, the microbial fouling, chemical cleaning was carried out to the forced contaminated hollow-fiber membrane with chemicals($H_2O_2$, NaOCl, and NaOH). Chemical cleanings with $H_2O_2$and NaOCl, which are oxidizing agents, are better for sterilizing and desorbing the microbes than those with NaOH.

  • This study was carried out to develop a shredding-burying machine for application of gramineae green manure crops that were tall and had high biomass yield such as sudan grass and rye. We made a prototype to operate both shredding and burying concurrently to attach at middle-sized tractors. Field tests were performed with the prototype to treat rye and sudan grass. The test results showed that the average cutting length became shorter and the quantity of entwined stem became obviously decreased when the PTO shaft speed was fast and running speed was slow. Also, We found, when the cut stem length became shorter, the burying ratio became more increasing and the PTO power requirement became more decreasing. Working efficiency of the prototype was better than conventional Rotary. The test results for treating rye/sudan grass with prototype showed that average cutting length was 21.2/22.5 cm and burying ratio was 98.4/98.1% when the PTO shaft speed was 1,000/1,000 rpm and running speed was 0.25/0.17 m/s. Also, the working performance of the prototype was 0.79 and 1.14 h/10 a for rye and sudan grass, respectively. Finally, we found that the prototype of shredding-burying machine was better for labor than conventional method that required at least 3 times bigger tractor.

  • This study was aimed ultimately to develop an adsorption process treating heavy metal industrial wastewater by utilizing domestically abundant natural zeolite and the study was conducted in a series of investigations. Presented if1 this paper are the results of the preliminary batch mode test. Factors affecting an adsorption process of heavy metals of aqueous waste stream by zeolite are numerous. Factors such as hydrogen ion concentration and temperature are taken into consideration in the investigation to evaluate adsorptive capacity. The mechanisms of adsorption may better be described by an evaluation of adsorption isotherm andi of adsorption kinetics. It is observed from the preliminary investigation that an optimum adsorption occurs at higher pH's than 4. It is further demonstrated that $Cd^{+2}$ adsorption by zeolite follows the BET model better than the Freundlich and the Langmuir model and that the reaction time of at least 10 minutes is required. It is interesting to note that higher adsorptive capacity was found at higher temperature, suggesting that the adsorption is not only due to simple physisorption but also due to chemisorption.

  • The adsorption of Methylene Blue on Yeong-Il bentonite which was treated by aqueous NaOH, $Na_2SO_4 or NaHSO_4 solution respectively, varying concentrations, temperature and time, was studied. In case of treatment with NaHSO_4 solution, slight improvement of the adsorption of Methylene Blue on bentonite was observed. With Na_2SO_4$ solution, the best results obtained when bentonite was treated with 1 N of the solution for 2hr at $100^{\circ}C$, and the adsorption capacity of the product was 3 times better than that of original bentonite. At the higher concentration and the higher temperature than above, faujasite was formed. With NaOH solution, the best condition was in 1N solution for 1hr at $100^{\circ}C$ and the adsorption capacity of the product was 3.3 times better than that of original bentonite. At the higher concentration of the treating agent and at the higher temperature than above, hydroxysodalite was formed.

  • Background: It is axiomatic that average life span is prolonged in proportion to the advance of socio-economic improvements and medical science. Consequently, the number of elderly patients with skin diseases is increasing. Objective: This study was performed to examine the patterns of skin diseases in elderly patients that had visited Dongguk Oriental Medical hospital, Dept. of Dermatology. We also compared these patients to the young generational groups. Methods: We studied 67 elderly patients with complaints of skin diseases who had visited our hospital from March 2000 to February 2002. We analysed their skin diseases and compared them with the younger group's. Results: The results were as follows; 1. The common disease groups were eczema(32.8$\%$); pruritus(23.9$\%$); viral infections (13.4$\%$); psoriasis(9.0$\%$); fungal infections and urticaria(6.0$\%$). 2. The disorders prevalent in men were eczema(30.0$\%$); herpes zoster & pruritus(23.3$\%$); fungal infection(13.3$\%$); psoriasis (3.3$\%$); melasma(6.7$\%$). 3. The common diseases of women's group were observed in the following order; eczema(35.l$\%$); pruritus(24.3$\%$); psoriasis(13.5$\%$); urticaria(10.8$\%$); other dermatoses(8.1$\%$); herpes zoster(5.4$\%$). 4. The most frequent skin disease for those in their 50's was eczema(32.3$\%$); 60's, pruritus(36.8$\%$); 70's, eczema(50.0); and over eighties., eczema and pruritus(40.0$\%$). Conclusion: This study suggests that dermatologic problems in the elderly are very common, especially eczema, pruritus. It is a very different pattern from the younger group's. And we have to better consider more effective management and treatment for them; especially further dermatologic studies including substantial medical care. Usually Oriental medicine is good at treating chronic diseases and less harmful. So we expect it to be generally better for elderly patients than western medicine.

  • In this study, the evidence of thread embedding acupuncture (TEA) in treating cervical radiculopathy in randomized controlled trials was investigated. We searched 16 databases up to August 22, 2022. Of the 2,644 studies retrieved, 22 randomized controlled trials (2,483 participants) were selected. Quality assessments were performed using Cochrane's risk-of-bias tool and RevMan 5.4 software. Outcome measures in the included studies typically showed TEA had a significant therapeutic effect compared with simple acupuncture and other remedies, and TEA was better than sham TEA. Catgut and polydioxanone had no difference in effectiveness, however, catgut was considered to be less safe. TEA was shown to be more therapeutic when inserted deeper into the skin. Ultrasound guided TEA was more effective and safer than conventional TEA, and using a flat blade needle was better than conventional needles for TEA. No serious adverse events were reported from using TEA, and only a few mild side effects were observed. However, the limited number and heterogeneity of the included studies, together with the unclear methodological quality, indicate that higher-quality studies need to be conducted to determine the effectiveness and safety of TEA for cervical radiculopathy.
