The methodology known as "shape sensing" allows the reconstruction of the displacement field of a structure starting from strain measurements, with considerable implications for structural monitoring, as well as for the control and implementation of smart structures. An approach to shape sensing is based on the inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM) that uses a variational principle enforcing a least-squares compatibility between measured and analytical strain measures. The structural response is reconstructed without the knowledge of the mechanical properties and load conditions but based only on the relationship between displacements and strains. In order to efficiently apply iFEM to the most common structural typologies of civil engineering, its formulation according to the kinematical assumptions of the Bernoulli-Euler theory is presented. Two beam inverse finite elements are formulated for different loading conditions. Depending on the type of element, the relationship between the minimum number of required measurement stations and the interpolation order is defined. Several examples representing common applications of civil engineering and involving beams and frames are presented. To simulate the experimental strain data at the station points and to verify the accuracy of the displacements obtained with the iFEM shape sensing procedure, a direct FEM analysis of the considered structures is performed using the LUSAS software.

Multiple target tracking mainly focuses on tracking unknown number of targets in the complex environment of clutter and missed detection. The generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli (GLMB) filter has been shown to be an effective approach and attracted extensive attention. However, in the scenarios where the clutter rate is high or measurement-outliers often occur, the performance of the GLMB filter will significantly decline due to the Gaussian-based likelihood function is sensitive to clutter. To solve this problem, this paper presents a robust GLMB filter and smoother to improve the tracking performance in the scenarios with high clutter rate, low detection probability, and measurement-outliers. Firstly, a Student-T distribution variational Bayesian (TDVB) filtering technology is employed to update targets' states. Then, The likelihood weight in the tracking process is deduced again. Finally, a trajectory smoothing method is proposed to improve the integrative tracking performance. The proposed method are compared with recent multiple target tracking filters, and the simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively improve tracking accuracy in the scenarios with high clutter rate, low detection rate and measurement-outliers. Recently, mechanical systems such as a high-speed vehicles and railway trains moving on flexible beam structures have become a very important issue to consider. Using the general approach proposed in the first part of this paper, it is possible to predict motion of the constrained mechanical system and the elastic structure, with various kinds of foundation supporting conditions. Combined differential-algebraic equation of motion derived from both multibody dynamics theory and finite element method can be analyzed numerically using a generalized coordinate partitioning algorithm. To verify the validity of this approach, results from the simply supported elastic beam subjected to a moving load are compared with the exact solution from a reference. Finally, parametric study is conducted for a moving vehicle model on a simply supported 3-span bridge.
This paper deals with power system stabilization problem using a network control system in which the control is applied through a communication channel in feedback form. Analysis and synthesis issues are investigated by modeling the packet delivery characteristics of the network as a Bernoulli random variable, which is described by a two state Markov chain. This model assumption yields an overall system which is described by a discrete-time Markov jump linear system. These employ the norm to measure the performance of the system, and they compute the norm via a necessary and sufficient matrix inequality condition.
A theoretical approach is carried out to predict the quality factors of flexible modes of a microcantilever on a squeeze-film. The frequency response function of an inertially-excited microcantilever beam is derived using an Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The external force due to squeeze-film phenomenon is developed from the Reynolds equation. Slip boundary conditions are employed at the interfaces between the fluid and the structure to consider the gas rarefaction effect, and pressure boundary condition at both ends of fluid analysis region is enhanced to increase the exactness of predicted quality factors. To the end, an approximate equation is derived for the first bending mode of the microcantilever. Using the approximate equation, the quality factors of the second and third bending modes are calculated and compared with experimental results of previously reported work. The comparison shows the feasibility of the current approach.
The objective of this paper is to develop a size-dependent nonlinear model of beams for fluid-conveying nanotubes with an initial deflection. The nonlinear frequency response of the nanotube is analysed via an Euler-Bernoulli model. Size influences on the behaviour of the nanosystem are described utilising the nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT). Relative motions at the inner wall of the nanotube is taken into consideration via Beskok-Karniadakis model. Formulating kinetic and elastic energies and then employing Hamilton's approach, the nonlinear motion equations are derived. Furthermore, Galerkin's approach is employed for discretisation, and then a continuation scheme is developed for obtaining numerical results. It is observed that an initial deflection significantly alters the frequency response of NSGT nanotubes conveying fluid. For small initial deflections, a hardening nonlinearity is found whereas a softening-hardening nonlinearity is observed for large initial deflections.

This paper presents a displacement-based numerical methodology following the Euler-Bernoulli theory to simulate the 2 nonlinear behavior of steel structures. It is worth emphasizing the adoption of co-rotational finite element formulations considering large displacements and rotations and an inelastic material behavior. The numerical procedures proposed considers plasticity concentrated at the finite elements nodes, and the simulation of the steel nonlinear behavior is approached via the Strain Compatibility Method (SCM), where the material constitutive relation is used explicitly. The SCM is also applied in determining the sections bearing capacity. Moreover, the present numerical approach is not limited to a specific structural member cross-sectional typology, with the residual stress models introduced explicitly in subareas of steel cross-sections generated by a 2D discretization. Finally, results consistent with the literature and with low processing time are presented.
This paper presents an innovative stress-function variational approach in formulating the interfacial shear and normal stresses in an externally bonded concrete joint using carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) plies. The joint is subjected to surface traction loadings applied at both ends of the concrete substrate layer. By introducing two interfacial shear and normal stress functions on the CFRP-concrete interface, based on Euler-Bernoulli beam idea and static stress equations of equilibrium, the entire stress fields of the joint were determined. The complementary strain energy was minimized in order to solve the governing equation of the joint. This yields an ordinary differential equation from which the interfacial normal and shear stresses were proposed explicitly, satisfying all the multiple traction boundary conditions. Lamination theory for composite materials was also employed to obtain the interfacial stresses. The proposed approach was validated by the analytic models in the literature as well as through a comprehensive computational code generated by the authors. Furthermore, a numerical verification was carried out via the finite element software ABAQUS. In the end, a scaling analysis was conducted to analyze the interfacial stress field dependence of the joint upon effective issues using the devised code.
In general, the study of a high-rise building's behaviour when subjected to a horizontal load (wind or earthquake) is carried out through numerical modelling with finite elements method. This paper proposes a new, original approach based on the use of a multi-beams model. By redistributing bending and axial stiffness of horizontal elements (beams and slabs) along vertical elements, it becomes possible to produce a system of differential equations able to represent the structural behaviour of the whole building. In this paper this approach is applied to the study of bending behaviour in a 37-storey building (Torre Pontina, Latina, Italy) with a regular reinforced concrete structure. The load considered is the wind, estimated in accordance with Italian national technical rules and regulations. To simplify the explanation of the approach, the wind load was considered uniform on the height of building with a value equal to the average value of the wind load distribution. The system of differential equations' is assessed numerically, using Matlab, and compared with the obtainable solution from a finite elements model along with the obtainable solutions via classical Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The comparison carried out demonstrates, in the case study examined, an excellent approximation of structural behaviour.

Aeroelastic analysis of an aircraft with a high aspect ratio wing for medium altitude and long endurance capability was attempted in this paper. In order to achieve such an objective, various structural models were adopted. The traditional approach has been based on a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam model. The structural analysis results of the present beam model were compared with those by the three-dimensional NASTRAN finite element model. In it, a taper ratio of 0.5 was applied; it was comprised of 21 ribs and 3 spars, and included two control surfaces. The relevant unsteady aerodynamic forces were obtained by using ZAERO, which is based on the doublet lattice method that considers flow compressibility. To obtain the unsteady aerodynamic force, the structural mode shapes and natural frequencies were transferred to ZAERO. Two types of unsteady aerodynamic forces were considered. The first was the unsteady aerodynamic forces which were based on the one-dimensional beam shape; the other was based on the three-dimensional FEM model shape. These two types of aerodynamic forces were compared, and applied to the foregoing flutter analysis. The ultimate goal of the present research is to analyze the possible interaction between the rigid-body degrees of freedom and the aeroelastic modes. This will be achieved after the development of a reliable nonlinear beam formulation that would validate the current results as well as enable a thorough investigation of the nonlinearity. Moreover, such analysis will allow for an examination of the above-mentioned interaction between the flight dynamics and aeroelastic modes with the inclusion of the rigid body degrees of freedom.
