Preparation and Characterization of Acrylic Acid Grafted Polypropylene Nonwoven Fabric (아크릴산 그라프트 폴리프로필렌 부직포의 제조와 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is in development of effective filter-type polymer adsorbent for removal of pollutants from wastewater by UV irradiation graft polymerization. Photografting of acrylic acid (AA) on polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric using benzophenone (BP) as a photosensitizer was investigated. Inhibition of homopolymerization was achieved by adding various concentrations of $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ and Mohr's salt. As AA concentration was increased, the degree of grafting was increased as to a specific value and then decreased, and the effect of BP concentration showed the same tendency. It was also found that the degree of grafting increased with reaction time and reaction temperature. Addition of the polyfunctional monomers and $H_2SO_4$ to the grafting system accelerated the photografting. The melting temperature, molecular weight and breaking stress and breaking strain were decreased with the increase in the degree of grafting.

  • Crosslinked poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) were prepared by ultraviolet irradiation of low molar mass, liquid PEGs in the presence of benzophenone (BP) as a photoinitiator. The networks obtained have been characterized by DSC, IR, and contact angle measurements, and their water absorption and equilibrium swelling have been examined. The percent of gel formed and degree of swelling of the networks in water were dependent on the amount of BP in the reaction mixture, irradiation time and molar mass of PEG. Gel fraction yield exceeded 84%, and equilibrium swelling in water varied from 49 to 244%.

Improved Thermal Stability of PET Fabrics by Photografting of Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(MAPTMS) (Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(MAPTMS)의 광그라프트에 의한 PET직물의 열적 안정성 향상)

  • Methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MAPTMS), a hybrid organic-inorganic monomer, was photografted onto PET fabric using benzophenone (BP) as a photoinitiator. It was found that a UV energy of 43.2J/$cm^2$ was required to optimally photograft the MAPTMS onto PET fabrics which was applied with an aqueous formulation of 10% MAPTMS, 20% BP and 0.5% N-Methyldiethanol amine (MDEA). The MDEA additive was efficient in reducing atmospheric oxygen inhibition of polymer radicals which eliminated compulsory nitrogen inerting. The surface grafting of PET fabrics was verified by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). The grafted PET fabrics with the hybrid monomer showed higher thermal stability due to the introduced silane component in the monomer as ascertained by higher char content at 800$^{\circ}C$, which increased to 14.5% for the 15.8% grafting compared to 8.2% for the untreated.

  • A mechanism for the synthesis of benzophenone from oxidation of diphenylmethane under Aliquit 336 phase transfer catalyst is investigated in this study. The production rate of benzophenone increased with the increasing amount of Allquat 336 and potassium tert-butoxide. At low concentrations of diphenylmethane and oxygen, the reaction order was first with the concentrations of diphenylmethane and oxygen respectively, but it approached to zero order at high concentrations. Tert-butyl alcohol, by-product of the reaction, inhibited the formation of benzophenone.   • In recent years, the safety of sunscreens has been challenged based on the reports of their adverse effect on users; dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis and photo allergic contact dermatitis. The unscientific idea that higher SPF sunsreen is good for health mealeads many users to tend to prefer higher SPF sunscreen. In the toxicological aspect, the need to investigate the safety of sunscreens is steadily increasing. However, there were few studies on the correlation between sun protection factor (SPF) and the safety of sunscreens. The objective of this study was to assess whether there was a correlation between SPF and the safety of sunscreens. We measured in vitro SPF index using homosalate as a standard and examined the toxicity tests such as primary skin irritation tests, ocular irritation test and skin sensitization test. Homosalate (HS), octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), octyl salicylate (OS), octocrylene (OC) as UVB organic filter and benzophenone-3 (BP3), butyl methoxy dibenzoil methane (BMDM) as UVA organic filter, and titanium dioxide (TD), zinc oxide (ZO) as inorganic filters were used. The skin irritation indexes in rabbits treated with HS, OMC, OS, BP3, and BMDM were significantly increased as SPF indices were increased. Neither ocular irritation in rabbits nor skin sensitization in guinea pigs were increased. It suggests that there might be a good correlation between SPF and the skin irritation indices of organic UV filters and skin irritation might be one of most sensitive index to assess the safety of sunscreens.

Analysis of UV Filters in Water using Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) and GC/MS-MS (교반막대 추출법과 GC/MS-MS를 이용한 수중의 자외선 차단제 분석)

  • A highly sensitive analytical method based on stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) technique and gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS-MS) has been developed, allowing the simultaneous multi-analyte determination of seven UV filters in water samples. The stir bar coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was added to 40 mL of water sample at pH 3 and stirred at 1,100 rpm for 120 min. Other SBSE parameters (salt effect and presence of organic solvent) were optimised. The method shows good linearity (coefficients > 0.990) and reproducibility (RSD < 12.9%). The extraction efficiencies were above 84% for all the compounds. The limits of detections (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) were 2.1~8.6 ng/L and 6.8~27.5 ng/L, respectively. The developed method offers the ability to detect 8 UV filters at ultra-low concentration levels with only 40 mL of sample volume. Matrix effects in tap water, river water, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) final effluent water and seawater were investigated and it was shown that the method is suitable for the analysis of trace level of 7 UV filters except of benzophenone (BP). The method developed in the present study has the advantage of being rapid, simple, high-sensitive and both user and environmentally friendly.

Synthesis of Poly(lactic acid)-g-Acrylic Acid Ion Exchanger by UV Radiation Method and Metal Adsorption Properties (UV조사에 의한 Poly(lactic acid)-g-Acrylic Acid 이온교환체의 합성 및 흡착특성)

  • This study investigates the metal adsorption properties of poly (lactic acid)-g-acrylic acid (PLA-g- AAc) synthesized by UV irradiation method. The properties including degree of grafting, water content, and ion exchange capacity (IC) strongly depend on the critical experimental factors such as UV intensity and AAc concentration. Under the optimized condition, the maximum degree of grafting, the IC value, and water content are 28%, 1.13 meq/g, and 38%, respectively. The synthesized ion exchanger shows strong capacity of adsorption for divalent metal ions such as $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, and $Co^{2+}$, and greater selectivity of adsorption for $Cu^{2+}$.
