An unbraced cantilever beam subjected to loads which cause bending about the major axis may buckle in a flexuraltorsional mode by deflecting laterally and twisting. For the efficient design of these structures, design engineers require a simple accurate equation for the elastic flexural-torsional buckling load. Existing solutions for the flexural-torsional buckling of cantilever beams have mainly been derived by numerical methods which are tedious to implement. In this research, an attempt is made to derive a theoretical equation by the energy method using different buckled shapes. However, the results of a finite element flexural-torsional buckling analysis reveal that the buckled shapes for the lateral deflection and twist rotation are different for cantilever beams. In particular, the buckled shape for the twist rotation also varies with the section size. In light of these findings, the finite element flexural-torsional buckling analysis was then used to derive simple accurate equations for the elastic buckling load and moment for cantilever beams subjected to end point load, uniformly distributed load and end moment. The results are compared with previous research and it was found that the equations derived in this study are accurate and simple to use.
The layered composites have a character to change of structure stiffness with respect to the layup angles. The deformations in the fan-blades to be initially designed by considering efficiency and noise, etc., which arise due to the pressure during the fan operation, can make the fan inefficient. Thus, so as to minimize the deformations of the blades, it is needed to increase the stiffness of the blades. An investigation has been performed to develop the three dimensional layered composite shell element with the drilling degree of freedom and the optimization module for finding optimal layup angles with sensitivity analysis. And then they have been verified. In this study, the analysis model is engine cooling fan of automobile. In order to analyzes the stiffness of the composite fan blades, finite element analysis is performed. In addition, it is linked with optimal design process, and then the optimal angles that can maximize the stiffness of the blades are found. In the optimal design process, the deformations of the blades are considered as multiobjective functions, and this results minimum bending and twisting simultaneously.

Springs are widely utilized in machine element. To find out stiffness of frustum-shaped coil spring, the space beam theory using the finite element method is adopted in this paper. In three dimensional space, a space frame element is a straight bar of uniform cross section which is capable of resisting axial forces, bending moments about two principal axes in the plane of its cross section and twisting moment about its centroidal axis. The corresponding displacement degrees of freedom are twelve. To find out load vector of coil spring subjected to distributed compression. principle of virtual work is adapted. And this theory was programming using MATLAB software. To compare FEM using MATLAB software was applied MSC. Nastran software. The geometry model for MSC. Patran was produced by 3-D design modeling software. Finite element model was produced by MSC. Patran. Finite element was applied tetra (CTETRA) having 10 node. The analysis results of the MATLAB and MSC. Nastran are fairly well agreed with those of various experiments. Using MATLAB program proposed in this paper and MSC. Nastran, spring constants and stresses can be predicted by input of few factors.
This paper presents the study on the stability of nonlinear oscillations of a thin cantilever beam subject to harmonic base excitation in vertical direction. Two partial differential governing equations under combined parametric and external excitations were derived and converted into two-degree-of-freedom ordinary differential Mathieu equations by using the Galerkin method. We used the method of multiple scales in order to analyze one-to-one combination resonance. From these, we could obtain the eigenvalue problem and analyze the stability of the system. From the thin cantilever experiment using foamax, we could observe the nonlinear modes of bending, twisting, sway, and snap-through buckling. In addition to qualitative information, the experiment using aluminum gave also the quantitative information for the stability of combination resonance of a thin cantilever beam under parametric excitation.
A slide-rail system is widely used in home appliances, furniture, mechanical rigs, and so many other applications; due to its high strength and performance for easy moving heavy objectives. In general, a pair of side slide-rails is set on both sides of a drawer to support and move it. So an unbalanced sliding motion can occur during opening and closing a drawer with pull and push force. To settle this problem, single central slide-rail having three collapsible rail-bodies was firstly proposed in this work. 'H'-beam shaped rail-body was newly designed to have enough bending and twisting strength. The experimental test showed that the proposed rail could be applied to large-size home appliances for easy moving drawer with heavy weight.
Dynamic behavior of piezoelectric ZnO nanowires is investigated using finite element analyses (FEA) on FE models constructed based on previous experimental observations in which nanowires having aspect ratios of 1:2. 1:31, and 1:57 are obtained during a hydrothermal process. Modal analyses predict that nanowires will vibrate in lateral bending, uniaxial elongation/contraction, and twisting (torsion), respectively, for the three ratios. The natural frequency for each vibration mode varies depending on the aspect ratio, while the frequencies are in a range of 7.233 MHz to 3.393 GHz. Subsequent transient response analysis predicts that the nanowires will behave quasi-statically within the load frequency range below 10 MHz, implying that the ZnO nanowires have application potentials as structural members of electromechanical systems including nano piezoelectric generators and piezoelectric dynamic strain sensors. When an electric pulse signal is simulated, it is predicted that the nanowires will deform in accordance with the electric signal. Once the electric signal is removed, the nanowires exhibit a specific resonance-like vibration, with the frequency synchronized to the signal frequency. These predictions indicate that the nanowires have additional application potential as piezoelectric actuators and resonators.
As electric vehicles (EV) have increasingly replaced the conventional vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE), most of automotive makers are actively devoting to the technology development of EV parts. Accordingly, the manufacturing process for power source has been also shifting from engine/transmission to EV motor/reducer system. However, lack of experience in developing the EV motor still remains as a technical challenge. In this paper, we employed the forming simulation based on finite element modeling to solve this problem. In particular, in order to increase the accuracy of the forming simulation, we introduced the elastic-plastic constitutive model parameters for polymer-copper hybrid wire by investigating the individual strain-stress curves, and elastic modulus of polymer and copper. Then, the reliability of modeling procedure was confirmed by comparing the simulated results with experiments. Finally, the identified mechanical properties and finite element modeling were applied to a hairpin forming process, which involves multiple deformation paths such as bending, pressing, widening, and twisting. The proposed numerical approach can replace common experience or experiment based trials by reducing production time and cost in the future.
In order to analysis of the stress distribution around flaws and the interaction effects between fatigue cracks, stress around micro hole was analyzed by Finite Element Method(F.E.M.) and micro hole specimens were tested using rotary bending fatigue machine and twisting fatigue machine to identify stress effects for fatigue cracks initiating from micro holes and interaction effects between micro holes. The results are as follows : Interaction effects of .sigma. $_{y}$for the micro hole side is larger than the large micro hole side when the interval between micro holes is near. Stress concentration factor increase as the diameter of micro hole becomes smaller. But, stress field of micro hole is smaller than that of large micro hole at h .leq. r (h:depth of micro hole, r:radius of micro hole) and that of large hole is larger than that of small micro hole at h >r expect the small range from micro hole.e.
This paper describes a method to design a lightweight modular bridge for a railway infrastructure system. A lightweight design was achieved using the material selection method. Aluminum extrusions and honeycomb sandwich composites were selected as the best materials to reduce the weight of the upper structure of a conventional modular bridge made of carbon-steel material. The structural integrity of the lightweight modular bridge was evaluated under vertical and wind loads. The twisting and bending natural frequencies were also evaluated to investigate its dynamic characteristics. The results showed that the structural integrity and natural frequencies of the lightweight modular bridge, made of aluminum extrusion and sandwich composites, satisfied the design requirements. Moreover, it was found that the weight of the conventional modular bridge made of carbon steel could be reduced by a maximum of 47% using lightweight materials.
It is well known that $I_c$ (critical current) in HTS tape is more sensitive to $B{\perp}$ (magnetic field amplitude applied perpendicular to the tape surface) than to B// (magnetic field amplitude applied parallel to the tape surface). Thus, the magnitude of $B{\perp}$ at HTS tape is important to the design of HTS motor, because it determines the operating current. In addition, the $I_c$ of HTS field coil is determined by not only the $B{\perp}$ but also stress and strain condition at given operating temperature. Therefore, at the stage of field coil design, stress and strain conditions should be considered because when the HTS tape is handled, it is necessary to know the limiting values of loading, bending and twisting to avoid any damages. The $I_c$ of field coil is calculated by 3D analysis and measured through experiments considering the $B{\perp}$ and the margin of contacts loss.
