  • This study is the second phase of the author's larger attempt to investigate the factors affecting housewives' caregiving behavior to their elderly parents-in-law. Specifically, it revises and expands the previous model (1998) and develops a new one by rectifying the three major problems inherent in the previous study: (1) misspecification error; (2) non-equivalent comparison of results between the father-in-law model and mother-in-law model that stems from the inclusion of heterogeneous group of caregivers; (3) measurement problems for the two endogenous variables of eldercare attitude and behavior. To do this, the current study proposes a more comprehensive model by additionally incorporating other salient exogenous variables, renders the comparison of results between the father-in-law and mother-in-law models equivalent by including only homogeneous group of caregivers (i. e., only those housewives whose parents-in-law are both alive), and introduces standardized measurement scales for the endogenous variables. Estimation of the model in terms of maximum likelihood procedures in LISREL8 attests to a better overall performance over the previous model when judged from several criteria such as coefficient of determination, model fit statistics, proportion of significant causal paths, and measurement properties of reliability and validity for the variables. Interpretation of the findings suggests several salient theoretical implications that concern such crucial issues as the inconsistency between eldercare attitude and behavior, patterns of association among the subdimensions of eldercare, and the difference in the antecedents explaining attitude as opposed to behavior of eldercare. In particular, the finding that indicates almost no differences in the determinants between the father-in-law and mother-in-law models suggests a strong case to argue that caregiving behavior to fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law, respectively, is likely to be a uniform phenomenon sharing virtual1y the same antecedents, and that a unified single model is sufficient to account for caregiving behavior to both parties.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of stress types and coping styles on the relationship quality with mothers-in-law perceived by sons-in-law. The data was collected from 300 sons-in-law aged 20~49 by using a survey questionnaire. The main results of this study were as follows: first, factor analysis yielded 4 types of coping(cognitive understanding coping, avoidant coping, direct behavior coping, and indirect behavior coping) and 7 types of stress(despising poor ability and condition, interference in daily life, son-in-law discrimination, wife discrimination, uncomfortable interaction, differences in lifestyle, and excessive demand). Second, the total stress perceived by sons-in-law in the relationship with their mothers-in-law was affected by avoidant coping and cognitive understanding coping. Finally, the relationship quality between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law was influenced by avoidant coping, uncomfortable interaction stress, direct behavior coping, differences in lifestyle stress, son-in-law discrimination stress, interference in daily life stress, frequency of meeting, cognitive understanding coping, indirect behavior coping, and age. Consequently, it was confirmed that sons-in-law's coping styles with stress from their mothers-in-law was more influential than the amount of stress perceived by sons-in-law on the relationship quality with their mothers-in-law. Especially, 'avoidant coping' among 4 styles of coping and 'uncomfortable interaction stress' among 7 types of stress influenced the relationship quality between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law the most.

  • The purpose of the present study is to understand the change in the relation between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law according to the social change in comparison with the survey effects in 1974 (ko Jung-Ja) and 1985 to find out the cause of conflict in both side of power structure and affection structure, indicating behavior, the influences on the relationships among family, possible meditators. this thesis was made by an experimental research. Data were collected from 146 mothers-in-law and 141 daughters-in-law in Pusan. The collected data were analysed by statistical methods such is as follows, 1. cause of conflict In power structure the cause of conflict is, in the case of mother-in-law opinion opposion and shaughty attitude by daughter in-low and, in the case of daughter-in-law, domestic dominance. It is thought that there is a difference of viw\ew between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law about the possesion of economic dominance and many conflicts rises because of economic dominance. but the study in 1985 than 1974 suggests the possibility of conflict meditator because mother-in-law and daughter-in-law do homework dependently in the practice of power. In affection structure, the chief dissatisfaction toward daughter-in-law showes the change in time. In 1974, there was no affection and respect. In 1985, the rate of doing without consultation was high. Also, the lack of communication of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is the cause of conflict. 2. Indicating behavior the rate of thinking alone if high in both sides. But in the survey of 1985, the covert verbal aggressive action with which mother-in-law appeals to her daughter and daughter-in-law to husband is rising. 3. Influence on the relationship among family by the conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. the conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law play negative effects on the intimacy and relation between husband and wife. 4. Conflict mediation behavior As compremiser, it is suggested that in the case of daughter-in-law the position and role of husband is important and, in the case of mother-in-law respects mother-in-law, daughter-in-law and gives her the role.

  • The aim of present study was to explore there were relationships among familism(collectivism vs. individualism), filial responsibility, and helping behavior of the middle-aged women towards parents. The respondents were 552 married women in their thirties, forties and fifties. OK Sun-hwa(1989)'s Seelbach (1978)'s, Cicirelli (1983)'s and Chang Sun-ju(1989)'s scale were utilized to tap the familism, filial responsibility, and helping behavior of the middle age daughter and daughter in low respectively. The major results of the study were summerized as follows; 1) Married women perceived relatively high levels of familism and filial responsibility and a moderate level of helping towards their parents and in-law parents as well. Among the demographic variables, education, income and age of the married daughters and daughters-in-law were found to be correlated to both familism and filial responsibility of support for their parents, Also, education and age were negatively related to helping behaviors. 2) Marred women reported similar levels of filial responsibility of support towards parents in law and their own parents, However significant difference were found between the amounts of helping behavior towards parents-in-law and their own parents. 3) Regression analysis revealed that living arrangement(living with parents or not ), the level of filial responsibility , and education level provided to be significant predictors on the helping behavior towards parent-in-law explaining 46% of the total variance. On the other hand, filial responsibility , living pattern, and income level for the parents were powerflu in predicting helping behavior towards their own parents accounting 24% of the total explained variance. 4) A path analysis model indicated that while educational level and living arrangement influenced directly to helping behavior toward parent-in-law, living arrangement, income level of parents and familism were directly associated with helping behavior for parents of their own. Therefor , helping behavior of the middles aged women was significantly mediated by familism and filial responsibility for support towards both parents-in-law and their own parents.

  • Purpose - Six months have passed since the amendment of the SSM regulation law; however, as yet, there is no confirmed research or report on the effects of this amendment, which are indefinite. Further, there have been no attempts to study the effects of the SSM regulation law from the consumers' viewpoint, which is important because consumers are the main agents that are greatly influenced by the amendment law. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the consumers' attitude toward the SSM regulation law as well as the effects of the SSM regulation law on the changes in purchase behavior. Research design, data, and methodology - This study was initiated from four research problems that are linked to consumer reaction to the SSM regulation law. Research problem 1: What is the consumers' reaction (perception, attitude, and perceived fairness) to the SSM regulation law? Research problem 2: How do the consumers' reactions to the SSM regulation law differ by consumers' characteristics? Research problem 3: Could the SSM regulation law change a consumer's purchase behavior? Research problem 4: Is it necessary to amend the SSM regulation law? This study collected the data through the interview and survey of housewives for the purpose of solving the research problems. The interview was conducted as a pilot study for the field survey. We interviewed three housewives, who were: an employed housewife, a full-time homemaker, and a manager of a housewife club, respectively. We then conducted a field survey of 232 housewives who were housewife club members or elementary school parents in Chunghcheong-do. Results - We verified the reliability and validity of the data, and analyzed it to solve the research problems. The main findings of this study were as follows. First, consumers still have a positive attitude toward large discount chains and SSM, which has been the case since the law was introduced. Second, perceived risk of consumers associated with traditional markets and small neighborhood shops was low. Third, consumers think that amendments of the SSM regulation law are important, and they positively assess the satisfaction, necessity, and propriety of the law. Fourth, although the SSM regulation law caused inconvenience to consumers, this law did not have any influence on the usage frequency and the use-behavior of large discount chains. Finally, consumers reacted very negatively to the toughening up of the SSM regulation law. Conclusions - In short, consumers still have a positive attitude toward the SSM regulation law. However, this act did not have any influence on the use-behavior of large discount chains (General Super Market). Thus, policy making authorities require active communication and promotions to enhance the effect of the SSM regulation law. This study was of the nature of exploratory research, which did not focus on hypothesis testing, but on finding solutions to the research problems. Therefore, this study is no more than a simple data analysis. Future studies should attempt to investigate the actual effects of the SSM regulation law, on the basis of sufficient literature review and real sales data.

  • This study is designed to find out the determinants of housewives' caregiving behavior to their elderly parents-in-law. For this purpose, a tentative path model, constructed with major socio-demographic variables in the caregiver's family as exogenous variables, is proposed to account for caregiver's behavior to elderly parents-in-law. The model is estimated with data collected from a probability sample of housewives in Kwangju, Korea. Estimation of the model, separately for caregiver's fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law, in terms of maximum likelihood(ML) procedures in LISREL8 reveals that housewives' educational attainment, father-in-law's age, father-in-law's health status, and family size have statistically significant causal. effects on care giving behavior to fathers-in-law, and that housewives' educational attainment, mother-in-law's age, family size, and caregiving attitude have significant causal effects on caregiving behavior to mothers-in-law. Comparison of the two estimated models indicates caregiver's educational attainment, caretaker's age, and family size are prominent determinants of caregiving behavior that can be commonly generalized to the two models. Except for these common determinants, however, a nonnegligible amount of differences is identified between the two models. The findings are discussed and interpreted with suggesting some salient theoretical and policy implications.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between the conflict perceive by daughters-in-law and their coping behavior. The statistical procedures used were frequency, t-test, multiple regression, and factor analysis. The major finding are as follows; 1) The conflict perceived by daughters -in-law is not very high, but , in terms of scolding, discrimination, objection to visiting the parent home there are some conflict found. 2) The coping scale is composed of 9 factors by 27 items and adaptation to reality is the main factor. 3) Collision with mother-in-law, avoidance, self-blame, age, the attitude of mother-in-law about her son's marriage are proved to be influential variables of the degree of the conflict perceived by daughters-in-law. 4) Reanalysis is perhaps the significant coping pattern to improve the relation with mother-in-law.

  • Based on the Double ABCX model of family stress and adaptation this study was to investi-gate the intercorrelations among and the relative magnitutide of variables associated with diffe-rent levels of adaptation to conflict with mothers-in-law reported by daughter-in-law. Frequency of conflict was selected as a stressor(aA) Resource factor(bB) in this study was self-efficacy. Four types of blame(self-behavior self-character other people and impersonal world blame) were selected as perception factors(cC). The adaptation factors(xX) were the level of daughter-in-law's psychological well-being and marital adjustment. Data for this research were questionnaire responses from 151 daughters-in-law who lived in Seoul. The results of correlational analyses indicated that most variables were significantly correlated with each other. In addition results of the path analysis on daughter-in-law's psychological well-being indicated that higher scores on the psychological well-being were significantly associa-ted with(a) greater self-behavior blame for the conflict and (b) less ascription of blame to the impersonal world. Frequency of conflict influenced psychological well-being indirectly th-rough self-behavior blame and impersonal blame both of which were also found to mediate the effect of self-efficacy on the level of psychological well-being. However although all indepen-dent variables were significantly correlated with marital adjustment no variables had direct effects on marital adjustment.

  • In order to get the information of the deformational behavior of rock masses with time in waste disposal repository, it is necessary to measure the relationships between stress and strain and time for temperature. A creep law is used in conjunction with the elastic moduli to calculate stress and displacement following waste emplacement. Exponential-time law's parameters consist of stress and temperature. In this study, thermal creep test was carried out for Whangdeung granite. The measured creep deformation behavior was well explained by exponential time law and generalized Kelvin's rheological model. Mechanicla coefficients for exponential-time creep law showed the clear tendency of temperature dependent while those for Kelvein's model didn't.

  • Numerical Calculations for dimensionless pressure drop (friction factor times Reynolds number) have been obtained for fully developed laminar flow of MPL(Modified Power Law) fluid in isosceles triangle pipes. The solutions are valid for Pseudoplastic fluids over a wide range from Newtonian behavior at low shear rates through transition region to power law behavior at higher shear rates. The analysis identified a dimensionless shear rate parameter which for a given set of operating conditions specifies where in the shear rate range a particular system is operating, i.e., Newtonian, transition or power law region. The numerical calculation data of the dimensionless pressure drop for the Newtonian and power law regions are compared with previously published asymptotic results presenting within 0.16 % in Newtonian region and 2.98 % in power law region.
