  • Water quality is affected by the pollutants flowing into rivers since the interaction between water bodies and sediments in various environmental conditions. Especially, accumulation of sediments increases in the stagnant water areas due to a relative long hydrological retention time in the water bodies. Therefore, it is an important factor of water quality to understand characterization of the material behavior in water bodies and sediments. In this study, the objective of the conditional experiments was small and medium sized streams located in Gyeonggi-do. To estimate how the changes of fluoride behavior, depending on the pH, ion type, concentration, and clay contents. The pH results showed a trend that adsorption amount of fluorine decreased and the dissolution of fluorine increased following by pH increasing. The concentration and type of ions results showed that $Cl^-$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ ions had no significant effect on the adsorption ability of fluorine, the amount of dissolution was increased because $OH^-$ ion had active competition with fluorine in the reaction. The ingredient of sediment results showed that the amounts of fluoride adsorption and dissolution were reduced in samples, which contain relatively large amounts of Silt and Clay components. This means that the environmental conditions of water bodies greatly affect the adsorption and dissolution of fluoride in the sediments, so that proper management of fluoride in the sediments must precede an understanding of the environmental conditions of the water bodies.

  • Hydrogeochemical study in Samseung area (Boeun, Chungbuk) and waterrock interaction experiment using rock samples from the area were performed to elucidate the fluoride source in groundwater and explaining geochemical behavior of fluoride ion. Fluoride concentration of public water supply mostly using groundwater in Boeun area was significantly higher in South Korea. The maximum fluoride concentration of the study area was 3.9 mg/L, and 23% of samples exceeded the Korean Drinking Water Standard of fluoride (1.5 mg/L). The average concentration of fluoride was 1.0 mg/L and median was 0.5 mg/L. Because of high skewness (1.3), median value is more appropriate to represent fluoride level of this area. The relationships between fluoride ion and geochemical parameters ($Na^+$, $HCO_3$, pH, etc.) indicated that the degree of waterrock interaction was not significant. However, high fluoride samples were observed in $NaHCO_3$ type on Piper's diagram. The negative relationship between fluoride and $NO_3$ ion which might originate from surface contaminants was obvious. These results indicate that fluoride ion in groundwater is geogenic origin. The source of fluoride was proved by waterrock interaction batch test. Fluoride concentration increased up to 1.2 mg/L after 96 hours of reaction between water and biotite granite. However, the relationship between well depth and fluoride ion, and groundwater age and fluoride ion was not clear. This indicates that fluoride ion is not correlated with degree of waterrock interaction in this area but local heterogeneity of fluoriderich minerals in granite terrain. High fluoride concentration in Boeun area seems to be correlated with distribution of permeable structures in hard rocks such as lineaments and faults of this area. This entails that the deep bedrock groundwater discharges through the permeable structures and mixed with shallow groundwater.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of commercially available fluoride-containing oral rinses on the corrosion behavior of titanium alloys, which are the main components of orthodontic miniscrews. Methods: Four commercially available oral rinses (solution A, pH 4.46/260 ppm fluoride; solution B, pH 4.41/178 ppm fluoride; solution C, pH 6.30/117 ppm fluoride; and solution D, pH 4.17/3.92 ppm fluoride) were tested on titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) circular plates, and saline was used as the control. The open-circuit potential and potentiodynamic polarization of these materials were measured. Thereafter, all samples were evaluated under a field-emission scanning electron microscope. Results: Among the tested oral rinses, except solution D, the more the fluoride content was, the greater was the corrosion potential downtrend; the corrosion resistance of the titanium alloy sample was also lowered significantly (p < 0.05). Field-emission scanning electron microscopic analysis of the surface morphology of the titanium alloy samples revealed that all samples had some defects, crevices, or pitting after exposure to the oral rinses than before treatment. In particular, the samples in solution A showed the most changes. Conclusions: Commercially available oral rinses having a high fluoride concentration and a low pH may reduce the corrosion resistance of titanium alloys used in dental appliances such as orthodontic titanium miniscrews and brackets.

  • Direct copper electroplating on Mg alloy AZ31B was carried out in a traditional pyrophosphate copper bath containing potassium fluoride. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization methods were used to study the effects of added potassium fluoride on electrochemical behavior. The chemical state of magnesium alloy in the electroplating bath was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Adhesion of the copper electroplated layer was also tested. Due to the added potassium fluoride, a magnesium fluoride film was formed in the pyrophosphate copper bath. This fluoride film inhibits dissolution of Mg alloy and enables to electroplate copper directly on it. A dense copper layer was formed on the Mg alloy. Moreover, this copper layer has a good adhesion with Mg alloy substrate.

  • Organic-inorganic hybrid composites consisting of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and SiO$_2$ were prepared through a sol-gel process and the crystallization behavior of PVDF in the presence of $SiO_2$ networks was investigated by spectroscopic, thermal and x-ray diffraction measurements. The hybrid composites obtained were relatively transparent, and brittleness increased with increasing content of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). It was regarded from FT-lR and DSC thermal analyses that at least a certain interaction existed between PVDF molecules and the $SiO_2$ networks. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that all of the hybrid samples had a crystal structure of PVDF ${\gamma}$-phase. Fresh gel prepared from the sol-gel reaction showed a very weak x-ray diffraction peak near 2$\theta$=$21^{\circ}$ due to PVDF crystallization, and Intensity increased grade-ally with time after gelation. The crystallization behavior of PVDF was strongly affected by the amount of $SiO_2$ networks. That is, $SiO_2$ content directly influenced preference and disturbance fur crystallization. In polymer-rich hybrids, $SiO_2$ networks had a favorable effect on the extent of PVDF crystallization. In particular, the maximum portent crystallinity of PVDF occurred at the content of 3.7 wt% $SiO_2$ and was higher than that of pure PVDF. However. beyond about 10 wt% $SiO_2$, the crystallization of PVDF was strongly confined.

  • The purpose if this study was to investigate mother' oral health management behavior to their children. Two hundreds sixty seven mothers with elementary school students were surveyed among the residents living of Iksan city, Korea. A questionnaire was constructed and administered to the samples. The research focused in the following items: the subjects' socio-demographic factors such as education level and employment and so on; their knowledge of plaque; the leading causes of caries, regular dental examinations; dental treatment; their interest in their children's dental health; the frequency of the subjects examining their children's teeth; non-cariogenic food preparation, etc. Being based in collected data, mothers' oral health management behavior to their children were analyzed according to maternal socio-demographic factor and result were following. There was a difference in the subjects knowledge of dental plaque in accordance with their employment or unemployment and family income. There was no difference in mother's oral health management behavior to their children according to parents' education level, the subjects' age and family income. Most of mother answered the main reason of dental caries was that their children did not toothbrush their teeth regularly and there was a difference in the understanding of the subjects in accordance with the education level of fathers and family income. The subjects had a low understanding of the effect of preventing caries with the help of fluoride. They didn't have enough understanding of water fluoridation. So it is necessary that active campaigns should be launched to enlighten people in relation to the ways of preventing dental caries with fluoride.

  • PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) has at least from known crystalline structure ( ; they are referred to as the $\alpha$, $\beta$, $\gamma$ and $\alpha_p$ phase or forms II, I, III and $IV_p$). In this study, the manufactured PVDF thin films through vapor deposition method had for II ( ; the substrate temperature at 30$^{\circ}C$). The dielectric behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride) is affected by orientation and crystal modification. The very high value of the dielectric constant for high temperature conditioned film is believed to be due to the orientation effect. The loss peak caused by molecular motion of the molecules in crystalline regions.

  • Transient charging and discharging currents as well as space charge limited currents have been measured in biaxially stretched poly(vinylidene fluoride) film under various poling fields and temperatures. At low temperatures and short poling times, the I-V characteristics showed shallow trap behavior. When the current values extrapolated to the infinite time, the I-V characteristics indicate that the distribution of the trap energy levels is uniform or very broad. The abnormal suppression of current at higher poling voltages and the high discharge rate observed also in the same voltage range are attributed to the morphological changes due to dipole reorientation.

  • The most upcoming technical issue of automotive coating is the compact coating process. Pre-primed coating is the outstanding technology eliminating electro-deposition and primer coating process. The main properties of pre-primed coating for automotive are flexibility, corrosion resistance, and weldability. Therefore, we synthesized the conventional polyester, elastomeric polyester and polyvinylidene fluoride resins and evaluated their properties to use as weldable pre-primed automotive coatings. As the results of flexibility and curing behavior, the elastomeric polyester coating was most appropriate to use for the pre-primed automotive coatings.
