Purpose: In order to study the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Bee Venom Therapy, writhing syndrome, carrageenin induced edema, and complete adjuvant induced arthritis were experimented. Methods: 1. We used rats of writhing syndrom induced by acetic acid injection. Group I was treated with Acupuncture therapy. Group II was treated with Bee Venom thearpy. we compared with Group I, II and the control group. 2. We used rats of paw edema induced by carrageenin injection. Group I Was treated with Acupuncture therapy, Group II was treated with Bee Venom thearpy we compared with Group I, II and the control group. 3. We used rats of arthritis induced by Freud's complete adjuvant injection. Group I was treated with Acupuncture therapy, Group II was treated with Bee Venom thearpy we compared with GroupI,II and the control group. Results: 1. Analgesic effects on writhing syndrome induced by acetic acid injection showed statistical significance in Bee Venom treated group as compared with the control group. 2. The paw edema induced by carrageenin injection was decreased with statistical significance in Bee Venom treated group as compared with the control group. 3. The arthritis induced by Freud's complete adjuvant injection wasn't significant. Conclusion: Bee Venom Therapy was effective on inflammatory disease.

Bee Venom therapy, as bee honey has long contributed to human life as a valuable fancy food since human history began. It can be found in the literature back up to a thousand years as a form of therapy for management of apin of various origin. Even to the present, there are some physicians and medical personnel who believe in the effects of bee sting therapy throughout the world. However Bee Venom therapy remains somewhat controversial and there are very few controlled studies available to guide clinical practice. We administered apitherapy(Bee venom therapy) against pain of musculoskeletal origin in thirty one patients from october 1988 to october 1990 and got successful results in seventy one percent of patients. Our results suggest that Bee Venom therapy can be one of the methods for conquering pain caused by true inflamation.

Objectives : This study was to investigate the effectiveness of bee venom phamacopuncture complex therapy on the sequelae of peripheral facial palsy. Methods : We observed the effectiveness of bee venom pharmacopuncture complex therapy on three patients who have residual symptoms of Bell's palsy although early stage(0 to 3months) elapsed. H-B grade and Yanagiha's total score was used for evaluating the patient. Results : 1. Deviation of the bee venom therapy on the sequelae of peripheral facial palsy, One patient was improved from 19 to 39, another patient was improved from 25 to 40, the third patient was improved from 15 to 26 on Yanagiha's total score. 2. In the bee venom therapy on the sequelae of peripheral facial palsy, compared with baseline, at final, H-B grade and Yanagiha's total score was increased. Conclusions : Bee venom phamacopuncture can be available for relieving residual symptom of bell's palsy after the early stage.

This study was designed to investigate the effect of Bee Venom Acupuncture on Ligament Relaxation. The patient was treated with Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy, Acupuncture and Microwave. Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy was administered at fibroosseous junction of the relaxed ligament. We evaluated the patient through Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Range of Motion(ROM), tenderness. Atter treatment, the patients showed that clinical symptoms was disappeared, VAS changed from 10 to 1 and there was no limitation of ROM. According to the result, Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy may have rapid effects on the Ligament Relaxation. But further studies are required to prove the effect of Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy of Ligament Relaxation

Objective : This study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Bee Venom acupuncture therapy on external epicondylitis. Methods : We divided chronic arthritis of ankle patient into 2 groups; one group combined bee venom acupuncture therapy and acupuncture therapy, another group was only acupuncture therapy. To estimate the effectiveness of treatment that applied for two groups, we used visual analog scale(VAS). We compared the VAS score of two groups statistically. Results : 1. As a result of evaluation by using visual analog scale(VAS), treatment score at final was marked more higher than score before treatment on each groups. 2. treatment at final, acupuncture and bee venom acupuncture therapy group had significant result on visual analog scale(VAS) compared with acupuncture therapy group. Conclusion : Bee Venom acupuncture therapy can be used with acupuncture therapy for highly effective treatment for external epicondylitis.

We have studied Bee Venom Therapy to treat Sequalae of Sprain, and obtained following results. 1. The treatment of sprain is using the effect of the affected part on Bee Venom Therapy. 2. For the treatment of sprain, it is often used the near acupuncture point of injury(近位取穴) or painful point to press(阿是穴). 3. Bee Venom Therapy is one of the powerful treatment, so we are using the sequalae of sprain in the case of not cured by Acupuncture, Cupping or another therapy. 4. Bee Venom injection is started a small quantity, and is increased slowly by degrees. 5. The immune response by Bee Venom Therapy is a sort of Allergy, and it is classified large delayed reaction. It is considered positive reaction. 6. We have selected Acupuncture Points from one to four by the degree of injury. 7. The period of treatment is some different from the degree of injury, but generally we have obtained good results to treat from 5 to 20 by Bee Venom Therapy.

The authors reports in order to study the effect of Bee Venom therapy of progressive muscle atrophy. The authors investigated 1 patient who is treated at Woosuk University Oriental Medical Hospital. The patient diagnosed by MRI EMG Hematology Muscle biopsy as progressive muscle atrophy is administered by Bee Venom therapy for 4 months. Bee Venom therapy is operated by 2 times per a week(every 3 days, 0.1cc per one operation, 0.05cc per one acupuncture point). The authors checked changes of this patient's chief symptoms by comparing before and after Bee Venom therapy is operated at 30 times. After Bee Venom therapy, the patient increased motor power & ROM, decreased general cooling sense & swallowing disorder. As above, the authors conclude that better results can be obtained Oriental Medical Treatment with Bee Venom therapy in progressive muscle atrophy

Objectives : There have been many studies of the effect of Bee Venom therapy about arthritis, but no one study was reported about its whole functional mechanism to musculo-skeletal system. This study was designed to investigate the effect, Indication, and side effect of Bee Venom therapy on musculo-skeletal disease by literature review of articles. Results : The effects of Bee Venom therapy to musculo-skeletal system are divided to Anti_inflammatory effect and Anti-nociceptive effect. Anti_inflammatory effect is achieved through competitive chemotaxis, immuno-regulation, increasing of cortisol secretion by stimulating hypothalamus-pituitary gland-adrenal cortex axis. Anti-nociceptive effect is achieved by Anti-inflammatory mechanism and it works similar to anti-nociceptive effect of the acupuncture acting on central and peripheral nociceptive transduction system. The Bee Venom therapy could cause severe side effect, for example, hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis, injury to central nerve system and cardiovascular system, peripheral blood system, and renal dysfunction. Conclusions : With its Anti-inflammatory and Anti-nociceptive mechanism, Bee Venom therapy is considered that has good effects to autoimmune disease, chronic inflammation of various musculo-skeletal disease and various pain syndrome. But the clinician must be careful for its side effects.

Objective The aim of this study is to investigate if Sweet Bee Venom therapy has the equal effect in comparison with Bee Venom Therapy on Low back pain with Radiation pain. Methods Clinical studies were done 24 patients who were treated low back pain with radiation pain to Dept. of Acupuncture & Moxibusition, of Oriental Medicine Se-Myung University from April 1, 2007 to September 30, 2007. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups ; Bee Venom treated group(Group A, n=10), Sweet Bee Venom treatred group(Group B, n=14). In Bee Venom treated group(Group A), we treated patients with dry needle acupuncture and Bee Venom therapy. In Sweet Bee Venom treatred group(Group B), we treated patients with dry needle acupuncture and Sweet Bee Venom therapy. All process of treatment were performed by double blinding method. To estimate the efficacy of controlling pain. we checked Visual Analog Scale(VAS). For evaluating functional change of patients, Straight Leg Raising Test(S.L.R.T) was measured. Results 1. In controlling pain, Sweet Bee Venom treatred group(Group B) had similar ability in comparison with Bee Venom treated group(Group A). 2. In promoting function, Sweet Bee Venom treatred group(Group B) had similar ability in comparison with Bee Venom treated group(Group A). Conclusions It may be equal effects as compared with using Bee Venom to treat low back pain with radiation pain using Sweet Bee Venom. We can try to treat other disease known to have effect with Bee Venom.

Background and Objectives: Bee venom therapy is a new acupuncture theraphy using both acupuncture effect and a medical effect that the biochemical peculiar material affects body. The bee venom theraphy is efficacious of injecting region of disease and acupoint with extracting bee venom from bee and processing it. There have been more than 20 dissertations in Korea about bee venom and the bee venom research has actively been carrying done in other countries such as US, China, Russia, Northern Europe since 1980s. This paper is to understand the trend of arthritis and bee venom, and will be contributed to further bee venom study by analyzing local and international theses. Material and Method: This paper is reported by analyzing the dissertations regarding arthritis and bee venom of Korea and other countries and referencing PubMed. The reference terminology is as follows. bee venom, bee venom therapy, apitoxin, apitherapy, bee sting, bee sing therapy, arthritis, rheumatoid, rheumatic arthritis and so on. Results and Conclusions: The following result have been obtained. 1. Bee venom has an effect on both in vivio and in vitro of arthritisthis with suppressing inflammation, fever and pain. 2. Occasionally bee venom may induce either pain or inflammation. 3. Bee venom induces acute pain in healthy condition, while it suppresses inflammation and pain in regional inflammation state. 4. Bee venom may either induce or suppress pain and inflammation according to the used dosage.
