1. Definition : Bee-venom therapy does not involve actual bee-stings: it is a treatment method with acquired bee-venom extract through the electric stimulus on the bee, It is injected subcutaneusly on the acupuncture point after refining, according to the diagnosis of constitution and disease. 2. History : Around 2000 B.C., records that Bee-venom was used for therapy were written in the medical book of Babylonia and Papirus of ancient Egypt. Hippocrates, who is called the father of Medicine, said that Bee-venom is Arcanum, which means mysteric medicine. In Oriental medicine, B.C. 200, there was a clinical record that the meat suspended in front of the bee house on the tree in order to get bee-venom, was attached on the lesion. 3. Mechanism of Action : There are two aspects: 1) The effect of stimulating acupunture point It is similar to the chemical moxa. I think that there are several methods of stimulating the acupuncture point： For example, a simple needle is a mechanical stimulus, Moxa is a heating stimulus and electric and Raser acupunture etc. And another stimulus: in the ancient orient, a chemical stimulus called Chungu(Tianjiu), is attached to the lesions by using grinded insects (ex. Mylaris phalerate PALL.) which have toxin. So Bee venom therapy is similar to this. 2) The effect of biochemical ingredients Bee venom consists of 40 kinds of ingredients. For example, me Iii tin, Apamin, Pospholipase A2, MCD peptide, Adolapin and so on. They have effects which have been proven through experimentation l) tonifying mechanism of the body through increasing hormon secretion 2) tonifying immune system through proliferation of WBC, lymphocytes, macrophage 3) anti-inflammatory reaction Therefore Bee venom therapy is the representative 3rd Medicine, which combined East & West medicine. 4. Application of disease : L.B.P and HIVD, O.A, R.A, degenerative arthritis, shoulder pain and other pain diseases. 5. Therapic methods : According to constitution and disease, proper concentration of bee venom is injected on acupunture point, 2 times a week. Generally one term is consisted of 15times. 6. Contraindication : Heart disease, TBc, DM, kidney disease(nephritis), pregnancy, woman in menstruation 3-4 persons per 100,000 persons may have severe allergic reaction.

Objectives : This study was purposed to investigate the effect of honey bee venom aqua-acupuncture on decreased immune response by its production from Korea, North America and China. Methods : ICR-mouse was exposed with four minute sublethal 60Co- $\gamma$ -ray irradiation onto the body and got a series of each country's 0.1 ml honey bee venom aqua-acupuncture to Choksamni(ST36) every other day for three times. Thereafter the numbers of WBC, delayed type hypersensitivity, hemagglutinin titers, hemolysin titers, quantitation of T-cell and B-cell, lymphocyte transformation, natural killer cell activity, interleukin-2 productivity and interferon productivity were measured. Results : The numbers of WBC, delayed type hypersensitivity, hemagglutinin titers, hemolysin titers, quantitation of T-cell and B-cell and lymphocyte transformation were increased respectively with statistical significance in Korean, North American and Chinese honey bee venom aqua-acupuncture groups as compared with the control group. The natural killer cell activity was increased with statistical significance in Korean honey bee venom aqua-acupuncture group, and Interleukin-2 productivity and interferon productivity were not shown any statistical significance in all experimental groups as compared with the control group. Conclusions : According to the results, honey bee venom aqua-acupuncture has significant effect on decreased immune response, and Korean bee venom can be substituted for North American and Chinese one.

Objective : In the pain control, Bee Venom Acupuncture therapy is highly effective but cause allergic side-effects frequently. This study was performed to compare Bee Venom(BV) with BV Partner(BVP) in decreasing side-effects of BV. Methods : BV partner(BVP) which dilutes the Morus bombycis Koiduzumi Herbal Acupuncture was developed to decrease the side effects of the Bee Venom. We used D.I.T.I. to verify the effectiveness of BVP in decreasing side-effect of BV. We injected BV to Group I (n=18) at 4 points of body [Fengmen(風門 : B12), Feishu(肺兪 : B13), Fufen(附分 : B41), Pohu(魄戶 : B42)], and BVP to group II (N=18) at the same points. We observed the chages of temperature at beginning, 5 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, 2days and 7days after injection. Results : The following results were obtained; 1. The difference of temperature had been continued until 2days in BV group, but 1day in BVP group. 2. The difference of temperature was significantly greater than time at 1hour in BV and at 5 minutes in BVP. 3. Other side-effects(the local pain, redness, angioedema and pruritus) were less appeared in BVP than BV group, too.

Objective : This study is designed to investigate the effects of bee venom and melittin on cell death in neuroblastoma cell line after pretreatment with NG(nerve growth inhibitory substance) Methods : It was evaluated by using MTT assay, morphological method, DNA fragmenation, flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry analysis, RT-PCR and Western blot. Results : The MTT assay demonstrated that neuroblastoma cell viability was significantly inhibited dose-dependently by treatment with bee venom and melittin after pretreatment with NG in comparison awith control. The morphological study and fow cytometry demonstrated that neuroblastoma cell showed apoptosis. DNA fragmenation showed DNA ladder below 1 Kbp. Immunocytochemistry assay demonstrated that Fos and MAPK were down-regulated. RT-PCR analysis demonstrated that Fos and MAPK was down-regulated. Western blot demonstrated that Fos and MAPK were down-regulated from $1{\mu}g/ml$ bee venom in neuroblastoma cell pretreated with NG. Conclusion : These result suggests that bee venom and melittin after NG treatment have significant anti-cancer effect and further study is needed in vivo.

Objective: Ths research was to investigate the efficacy of bee venom theraphy on peripheral facial paralysis. Methods: Thirty patients were deyided into two groups with fifteen patients each. Group A and B were both treated with basic oriental medicine treatment, and also group A was treated with bee venom aqua-acupunture additionaly. The groups were evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system before treatment, and at every one week till four weeks after treatment. Results: The Yanagihara's scores of group B were higher than those of group A before treatment, after one week and two weeks, but not statistically significant. After three and four weeks, the Yanagihara's scores of group A were higher than those of group B, but not statistically significant. The improvement indexes of group A were higher than those of group B from the first week and statistically significant after three and four weeks. Conclusion: Combinding bee venom aqua-acupunture theraphy on peripheral facial paralysis was more efficacious than the only use of basic oriental medicine treatment.

This study was designed to study on major components of various Bee Venom(Bee Venom by electrical stimulation in Korea; K-BV I, Bee Venom by Microwave stimulation in Korea; K-BV II, 0.5mg/ml, Fu Yu Pharmaceutical Factory, China; C-BV, 1mg/ml, Monmouth Pain Institute, Inc., U.S.A.; A-BV) using HPLC(High performance liquid chromatography). The results were summarized as follows : 1. HPLC method is useful for analysis of Bee Venom when solution rate is above 1:4000. 2. Analysis of Apamin using HPLC, the Retention time was 8.7min, and standard measurement curve was a function of y=4E+06x+21245. 3. Analysis of Melittin using HPLC, the Retention time was 29.0 min, and standard measurement curve was a function of y=4E+06x+23015. 4. Concentration of Melittin was about 297times than Apamin in K-BV I, and about 329times in K-BV II at same 1:500 solution rate, abnormally about 12 times in C-BV at 1:4000 solution rate. 5. Chinese Bee Venom using HPLC, the point from 5 to 7min(Retention time) showed a big extraordinary peak. These data from the study can be applied to establish the standard measurement of Bee Venom and prevent pure bee venom from mixing of another components. I think it is desirable to study more about safety of Bee Venom as time goes by.

Objective: There is a case reports on treatment of elbow pain and dysfunction in patients diagnosed as Tennis elbow. We report the Bee venom Acupunure Theraphy about under using elbow pain and dysfunction in patients diagnosed as Tennis elbow got a good remedial value. Methods : The patients diagnosed as Tennis elbow and treated mainly with Bee venom Acupunture Therapy. Results & Conclusions : Symptoms of the patient such as elbow pain and dysfunction were improved after above treatments. So, it is suggested that oriental medical treatment(Bee venom) are effective on Tennis elbow.

Objective: There are some case reports on treatment of shoulder dislocation in Patients Undergoing Stroke. We report the electronic needle and the Bee venom Acupunure Theraphy about under using shoulder dislocation in patients Undergoing Stroke got a good remedial value. Methods : The patients diagnosed as shoulder dislocation and treated mainly with Bee venom Acupunture Therapy and electronic needle Results & Conclusions : Symptoms of the patientes such as shoulder pain, Range Of Motion(ROM) were improved after above treatments. The interval in X-ray film comes to be narrow. So, it is suggested that oriental medical treatment are effective on post stroke with shoulder dislocation.

Objective : The aim of this study is to investigate the curative effect of Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy for pain and limited R.O.M (range of motion) of shoulder in stroke patients. Methods : The subjects of this study were 6 patients with shoulder pain in stroke sequelae. Routine Oriental Medical programs (Acupunture, moxibustion, herbal medicine and physical therapy) were maintained for each subject throughout this study. Single subject ABABAB design was adopted. Each period was 4 days as a rule. Only during the treatment period, Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy was provided as intervention at the acupoints of LI15(Gyeonu),　TE14(Gyeollyo), GB21(Gyeonjeong), LI14(Bino). The change of pain was measured with a Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). The pain threshold was measured using pressure algometer at the same acupoints where Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy was provided. And the R.O.M of shoulder joint (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, external rotation, internal rotation) was measured as well. Analysis was performed by Bayesian analysis using WinBUGS for the comparison of treatment(Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy) and non-treatment. Results : The median overall improvement for difference in VAS was -2.219(-3.213, -1.175), for difference in external rotation of shoulder R.O.M was 9.992(-2.298, 18.49), for difference in tenderness score of LI14(Bino) by pressure algometer was 5.05(0.6283, 7.762). 95% credibility intervals being shown in brackets. However, the median overall improvement for difference in the other measurements was not significant. Conclusion : This study suggests that Bee Venom Therapy may be applicable to decrease pain and improve R.O.M of shoulder in hemiplegia patients with stroke. Further elaborated single subject designs need to be accumulated to confirm the effects of Bee Venom Acupunture Therapy on shoulder pain in patients with stroke sequelae.

Bee-venom Acupucture has good effect on pain control but We may be anxious about the problem of Liver and Kidneys on many times treated patients. Therefore, In order to analysis the clinical form, We have observed the LFT, RFT of 37 patients who visited Won-Kwang University Kunpo Oriental Medical Hospital and treated Bee Venom therapy over 20 times from March 1999 to February 2000. The results were summarized as follows 1. The distribution of sex was 25 females, 12 males, and the average of patients age was 42.3 years 2. The distribution of disease was degenerative arthritis, HIVD of L-spine, HIVD of C-spine, spinal stenosis, RA, etc. 3. The total treated times is 1464 and the average of treated times is 39.6 times 4. The results of the LFT(AST, ALT) of 37 patients showed that normal impression is occupied 91.9% and abnormal impression is occupied 8.1%. 5. The results of the RFT(BLTN, Creatinine) of 37 patients showed that normal impression is occupied 100%. 6. The results of treatment using BV-acupunture showed that 81.1% achieved above excelent recovery 13.5% achieved above good recovery, 5.4% achieved fair recovery.
