In this paper, it was presented an investigation on the load-settlement and vertical stress analysis of the ring footings on the loose sand bed by conducting both laboratory model tests and numerical analyses. A total of twenty tests were conducted in geotechnical laboratory and numerical analyses of the test models were carried out using the finite element package Plaxis 3D to find the ultimate capacities of the ring footings. Moreover, the results obtained from both foregoing methods were compared with theoretical results given in the literature. The effects of the ring width on bearing capacity of the footings and vertical stresses along the depth were investigated. Consequently, the experimental observations are in a very good agreement with the numerical and theoretical results. The variation in the bearing capacity is little when $r_i/R_o$ <0.3. That means, when the ring width ratio, $r_i/R_o$, is equal to 0.3, this option can provide more economic solutions in the applications of the ring footings. Since, this corresponds to less concrete consumption in the ring footing design.
Model pile tests in calibration chamber are performed in order to study the two factors that the pile bearing capacity is significantly influenced by. Those factors are the critical depth concept and the scale effect caused by pile diameters. Firstly, the predicted values of end bearing capacity from the various static formulae were compared with the measured ones from model pile tests. Secondly, the critical depth concept and the scale effect were investigated by using two different soil conditions in a series of calibration chamber tests : the one is uniform sand : and the other is weathered granites overlayered by sand. Main results obtained from the model tests can be summarized as follows : (1) The end bearing capacity was increased with pile penetration depth up to penetration ratio of 7 to 8 when the cell pressure is high, and the critical depth was observed in the current chamber tests with uniform sand layer , (2) The predicted end bearing capacities were mostly lager than the measured, and it was found that the differences between the predicted and the measured values became smaller as the pile penetration ratio was increased : (3) The end bearing capacity of the small diameter pile in weathered granites layer was mostly less than that of the larger pile, while in uniform sand layer it was vice.

This study, as basic research which was intended to develope the surface reinforcement method using reinforcement material which is applicable to very soft ground in Korea, was aimed at proposing Bearing Capacity Evaluation method for the surface ground improvement method. To that end, a wide width tensile test using geotextile, geogrid and steel bar (substitute for bamboo) and 21 kinds of the laboratory model tests with the end restraint conditions of the reinforcement that comprises the constrained and partially constrained (3 types) conditions were conducted. According to result of tests, Terzaghi's bearing capacity method is adequate to calculate bearing capacity in non-stiff material(geotextile, geogrid). But, It can't adequate to stiff material(bamboo net). So, New bearing capacity method suggest surface reinforcement method of very soft ground which Terzaghi's bearing capacity method modify for effect of stiffness.
In this paper the settlement characteristic of shallow foundation on sandy soil overlained by rigid ground was investigated by analyzing results of model tests. For model experiments, model tests were performed with sandy soils sampled from the field, changing the relative density of sandy soil and the ratio of thickness of sandy layer(H) to the width of model strip footing(B). As result of tests, settlement of sandy soils increases as the value of H/B increases, whereas it increases with relative density of soil. Bearing capacity decreases as the thickness of the sand layer relative to the footing width increases. In order to analyze the settlement characteristics of sandy ground, the results of model tests were compared with the predicted values using the empirical formulas proposed by Terzaghi, De Beer and Schmertmann. The method by De Beer was found to be in good agreements with test results.
A piled raft foundation is one of the systems used to reduce the settlement of structures. However, the general design method for a piled raft foundation system assumes that the piles only support external loads, which exclude the bearing capacity of the raft itself. In this study, an experimental model test was performed to evaluate the raft capacity for the external load on the sand. Additionally, a part of the sandy ground under the raft was replaced with a gravel mat to reinforce the piled raft foundation system and increase the bearing capacity. Then, parametric studies of the reinforced ground were performed to determine the displacement and load-sharing ratio of the piled raft foundation system.
The present study deals with the Pressure-settlement behavior of square and rectangular skirted footing resting on sand and subjected to a vertical load through a laboratory experimental study. A series of load tests were conducted in the model test tank to evaluate the improvement in pressure-settlement behavior and bearing capacity of square and rectangular model footings with and without structural skirt. The footing of width 5 cm and 6 cm and length/width ratio of 1 and 2 was used. The relative density of sand was maintained at 30%, 50%, 70%, and 87% respectively. The depth of skirt was varied from 0.25 B to 1.0 B. All the tests were carried out using a strain controlled loading frame of 50 kN capacity. The strain rate for all test was kept 0.24 mm/min. The results of present study reveal that, the use of structural skirt improves the bearing capacity of footing significantly. The improvement in bearing capacity was observed almost linearly proportional to the depth of skirt. The improvement in bearing capacity of skirted footings over footing without skirt was observed in the range of 33.3% to 68.5%, 68.9% to 127% and 146.7% to 262% for a skirt depth of 0.25 B, 0.50 B and 1.0 B respectively. The skirted footings were found more effective for sand at relative density of 30% and 50% than at relative density of 70% and 87%. The bearing capacity was found to increase linearly with footing width for footings with and without skirts. This observation was found to be consistent for footings with different skirt depths and for relative density of sand i.e., 30%, 50%, 70%, and 87%. The obtained results from the study for footing with and without skirts were comparable with available solutions from literature.

In this study, FDM modelling with axisymmetry condition and interface element was verified whether it is reasonable to estimate compositive behavior of a piled raft foundation. To this end, the modelling validity of piled raft foundations was estimated by comparing and analyzing numerical analysis results and laboratory model test results. Also, load bearing ratio of a raft is analyzed by performing sensitivity analysis of foundation parameters with the actual field conditions. As a result of this study, correlation between bearing capacity and vertical displacement of numerical results turned out to be similar with that of a laboratory model test. In addition, ultimate bearing capacity of piled rafts and load bearing ratio of the raft is calculated to be similar in both cases. The load bearing ratio of the raft was also estimated to be in the range of 33% to 52% from the sensitivity analysis. The results were confirmed to be similar to the previous studies. Therefore, it can be inferred that piled rafts can be effectively modelled applying axisymmetry condition and interface element.
A horizontal cyclic test was carried out to study the seismic performance of lightweight aggregate concrete filled steel tube (LACFST). The constitutive and hysteretic model of core lightweight aggregate concrete (LAC) was proposed for finite element simulation. The stress and strain changes of the steel tube and concrete filled inside were measured in the experiment, and the failure mode, hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, and strain curve of the test specimens were obtained. The influence of axial compression ratio, diameter-thickness ratio and material strength were analysed based on finite element model. The results show that the hysteresis curve of LACFST indicated favourable ductility, energy dissipation, and seismic performance. The LACFST failed when the concrete in the bottom first crushed and the steel tube then bulged, thus axial force imposed by prestressing was proved to be feasible. The proposed constitutive model and hysteretic model of LAC under the constraint of its steel tube was reliable. The bearing capacity and ductility of the specimen increase significantly with increasing thickness of the steel tube. The bearing capacity of the member improves while the ductility and energy dissipation performance slightly decreased with the increasing strength of the steel and concrete.

This study, as basic research which was intended to develope the surface reinforcement method using reinforcement material which is applicable to very soft ground in Korea, was aimed at proposing the design parameter for the surface ground improvement method. To that end, a wide width tensile test using geotextile, geogrid and steel bar (substitute for bamboo) and 25 kinds of the laboratory model tests with the end restraint conditions of the reinforcement that comprises the constrained and partially constrained (3 types) conditions were conducted. And the result indicated that the modulus of subgrade reaction or $N_c$ value (5.3) apparently overestimated the bearing capacity of very soft ground such as dredged ground. Moreover, as a result of model test by partially constraining the preload of 23.0kgf using geotextile, the effect of bearing capacity($q_1$) appeared to be the largest till the loading stress was $0.4tf/m^2$ due to cohesion, while it reached 75% of the maximum bearing force after $0.4tf/m^2$ due to increase in the effect of bearing capacity($q_2$) caused by the tensile force of the reinforcement. Such results tended to have appeared constantly or very similarly with each other, irrespective of the type of reinforcement (geogrid, steel bar) and constraint conditions.

This paper presented as follows results of laboratory model tests with various shaped footings on soil bed reinforced with the strips on the base of behaviour of soil structure according to the loads and triaxial test results reinforced with geotextiles. Their parameters studied were the effects on the bearing capacity of a footing of the first layer of reinforcement, horizontal and vertical spacing of layers, number of layers, tensile strength of reinforcement and iclination load to the vertical 1.Depending on the strip arrangement, ultimate bearing capacity values could be more improved than urreinforced soil and the failure of soil was that the soil structure was transfered from the macrospace to microspase and its arrangement, from edge to edge to face to face. 2.The reinforcement was produced the reinforcing effects due to controlling the value of factor of one and permeable reinforcement was never a barrier of drainage condition. 3.Strength ratio was decreased as a linear shape according to increment of saturation degree of soil used even though at the lower strength ratio, the value of M-factor was rot influenced on the strength ratio but impermeable reinforcement decreased the strength of bearing capacity. 4.Ultimate bearing capacity under the plane-strain condition was appeared a little larger than triaxial or the other theoretical formulars and the circular footing more effective. 5.The maximum reinforcing effects were obtained at U I B=o.5, B / B=3 and N=3, when over that limit only acting as a anchor, and same strength of fabric appeared larger reinforcing effects compared to the thinner one. 6.As the LDR increased, more and more BCR occurred and there was appeared a block action below Z / B=O.5, but over the value, decrement of BCR was shown linear relation, and no effects above one. 7.The coefficient of the inclination was shown of minimum at the three layers of fabrics, but the value of H / B related to the ultimate load was decreased as increment of inclination degree, even though over the value of 4.5 there wasn't expected to the reinforcing effects As a consequence of the effects on load inclination, the degree of inclination of 15 per cent was decreased the bearing capacity of 70 per cent but irnproved the effects of 45 per cent through the insertion of geotextile.
