This study analyzed the cases of cracks in piles due to the use of followers under construction conditions where water exists inside the piles, and confirmed whether the piles were cracked through a field test simulating the construction conditions in which water pressure inside the piles was generated by a hammer. According to the construction case, under the construction condition where the pile length is 20% to 30% shorter than the drilled length, about 80% cracks occur, so there is a high possibility of cracking due to water inside the pile. A field test was conducted to confirm the type of pile failure due to hammer under the construction condition in which water exists inside the pile. The pile head was not destroyed by the compressive load, and one or more longitudinal cracks occurred along the PC steel wire. The closed end pile generates water pressure by hammer. the follower and cushion(compression plywood) must be drilled at least 0.4D. It is expected that improved quality control will be possible as the water pressure inside the pile is reduced.

Multi-function and miniaturization of the medical equipment and tele-communication systems need small and high precision machined parts. For the economic machining of the small size workpiece it should be machined by small and high precision machine tools with high speed machining. The belt type driving system in turning lathe has a limitation of spindle speeds because of the vibrations from driving mechanism, built-in type of driving mechanism is used to reduce the vibration. However, the main spindle of the built-in motor is connected directly to the motor, so the heat generation of the motor and bearing makes bad influence of the accuracy of machine tools. In this study, the analysis of heat generation from motor and bearings supporting main spindle and experiment were carried out. The results of theoretical simulation of temperature and deformation of the main spindle are good agreement with those of measured.
Recently, the risk of fire outbreak is going up because of newly developed combustible materials are intended to apply more. Especially the steel framed structure can lose its load-bearing capacity when it is exposed to higher temperature condition such as a fire. So the pre-evaluation of fire resistance of the structure is very essential that the mechanical properties of yield strength and elastic modulus and thermal properties such as conductivity and linear expansion be required. To get the databases for SM 400 or welding structural steels at high temperature, various temperature conditions were used for deriving the yield strength, elastic modulus, linear expansion, and conductivity and the results were compared to those of SS 400, ordinary structural steel, respectively.

External pre-stressing strengthening method is the most popular way to strengthen concrete structures because of its efficiency and economic advantage. The laboratory test was performed to reinforce the slave bridge with the external tendon strengthening by longitudinally and transversally, which is concerned with formal feature of slave bridge, generally. Based on this test, anchoring device to strengthen the external tendon strengthening method was established and its strengthening effects were verified by evaluating the load bearing capacity.

The objective of this study is to increase the insight of the mechanical behaviour of high-strength concrete prepared with fiber reinforcement after exposure to elevated temperatures. In particular, the result of the effects of contents of polypropylene fiber and level of preload on the residual compressive strength, load bearing and stress-strain curve of concrete are discussed

In this study, the bearing pressure on the rubble mound of a gravity-based harbor structure with an arbitrarily shaped bottom was targeted. Assuming that the bottom of the structure is a rigid body, the rubble mound was modeled as a linear spring uniformly distributed on the bottom that resists compression only, and the bearing pressure evaluation formula was derived. It was confirmed that there were no errors in the derivation process by showing that when the bottom was square, the derived equation was converted to the equation used in the design. In addition, the validity of the derived equation was proven by examining the behavior and convergence value of the bearing pressure when an arbitrarily shaped bottom converges into a square one. In order to examine the adequacy of the method used in the current design, the end bearing pressure for the pre-designed breakwater cross-section was calculated and compared with the values in the design document. As a result, it was shown that the method used for design was not appropriate as it gave unsafe results. In particular, the difference was larger when the eccentricity of the vertical load was large, such as in the case of extreme design conditions.
This study develops and numerically verifies an innovative seismically resilient bracing system. The proposed self-centering tension-only brace (SC-TOB) is composed of a tensioning system to provide a self-centering response, a frictional device for energy dissipation, and a high-strength steel cable as a bracing element. It is considered to be an improvement over the traditional self-centering braces in terms of lightness, high bearing capacity, load relief, and double-elongation capacity. In this paper, the mechanics of the system are first described. Governing equations deduced from the developed analytical model to predict the behavior of the system are then provided. The results from a finite element validation confirm that the SC-TOB performs as analytically predicted. Key parameters including the activation displacement and load, the self-centering parameter, and equivalent viscous damping are investigated, and their influences on the system behavior are discussed. Finally, a design procedure considering controlled softening behavior is developed and illustrated through a design example.
In this study, in-situ static and dynamic tests of four pre-stressed concrete (PC) track beams with different span lengths and curvatures in a straddle monorail transit system were reported. In the static load tests, the strain and deflection at critical sections of the PC track beams were measured to determine the load bearing capacity and stiffness. The dynamic responses of strain, deflection, acceleration, and displacement at key positions of the PC track beams were measured under different train speeds and train loads to systematically study the dynamic behaviors of the PC track beams. A three-dimensional finite element model of the track beam-vehicle coupled vibration system was established to help understand the dynamic behavior of the system, and the model was verified using the test results. The research results show that the curvature, span length, train speed, and train loads have significant influence on the dynamic responses of the PC track beams. The dynamic performance of the PC track beams in the curve section is susceptible to dynamic loads. Appropriate train loads can effectively reduce the impact of the train on the PC track beam. The PC track beams allow good riding comfort.
The pre-tensioned spun high strength concrete (PHC) pile has poor load carrying capacity in shear and flexure, while showing excellent axial load bearing capacity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the flexural performance of the concrete-infilled composite PHC (ICP) pile which is the PHC pile reinforced with infilled concrete, transverse and longitudinal reinforcement for the improvement of shear and flexural load carrying capacity. The ICP pile specimen was designed to make allowable axial compression and bending moment higher load bearing capacity than those determined through the investigation of abutment design cases. The allowable axial compression and bending moment of the ICP pile was obtained using the program developed for calculating the axial compression - bending moment interaction. Then, ICP pile specimens were manufactured and flexural tests were performed. From the test results, it was found that the maximum bending moment of the ICP pile was approximately 45% higher than that of the PHC pile and the safety factor of ICP pile design was about 4.5 when the allowable bending moment was determined to be 25% of the flexural strength.

The present study has extended OpenSees, which is an open-source software framework DOS program for developing applications to idealize geotechnical and structural problems, for the static analysis of axial load capacity and settlement of single piles in MS Windows environment. The Windows version of OpenSees as improved by this study has enhanced the DOS version from a general purpose software program to a special purpose program for driven and bored pile analysis with additional features of pre-processing and post-processing and a user friendly graphical interface. The method used in the load capacity analysis is the numerical methods based on load transfer functions combined with finite elements. The use of empirical nonlinear T-z and Q-z load transfer curves to model soil-pile interaction in skin friction and end bearing, respectively, has been shown to capture the nonlinear soil-pile response under settlement due to load. Validation studies have shown the static load capacity and settlement predictions implemented in this study are in fair agreement with reference data from the static loading tests.
