The characteristics of multi-leaf feil bearing are investigated. The Foil bearing is preloaded and has several leaf foils modeled by curved beams. An analysis of the air foil bearing was performed, considering effects of foil deflection and compressible lubrication equation simultaneously. A parametric study shows that the number of foils significantly affect the static characteristics of air foil bearings and describes what the minimum film thickness means. The results include pressure profile, load capacity, dimensionless torque and minimum film thickness in the foil bearing.
The influence of sine wave striated surface roughness on load carrying capacity of a bearing is studied for thin film effect of slider bearing. A Reynolds equation appropriate for slider bearing is used in this paper for analysis and it is discussed using finite difference method of central difference scheme. For a slider bearing with sine wave simple roughness form, several parameters such as pressure, load capacity and shear stress of the bearing can be obtained and also this results can be stored in sequential data file for latter analysis. After all, their distribution can be displayed and analyzed easily by using the matlab GUI technique. The parameters such as amplitude, number of waviness and slope of the surface are used for discussing the load carrying capacity of the rectangular bearing. The results reported in this paper should be applied to the other slider bearing such as rectangular or round embossed surface of slider bearing.
Since MEMS based micro actuators or generating devices have high efficiency per volume, plenty of research are ongoing. Among them, MEMS based millimeter-scale micro gas' turbine is one of the most powerful issue for replacing chemical batteries. However, since limiting of MEMS manufacturing technique, it is very difficult that makes wide turbine bearing area. It causes low DN number, so sufficient bearing force is hard to achieve. Thus, the most important issue on micro gas turbine is proper bearing design which can keep rotor stable during operation. In order to that, micro-scale gas-lubricated bearing is generally used. In this paper, basic feasibility study and design of journal bearing for 10mm diameter micro gas turbine is described Journal bearing is hydrostatic gas-lubricated type. Numerical simulation is performed with ANSYS CFX 11.0 which is commercial numerical tool. Repulsive force when there is radial displacement in bearing and returning time is calculated using steady and unsteady cases. Auto re-meshing technic is used for moving mesh unsteady cases which simulate displacement of axis and its movement. The simulation results are used for further design of micro gas turbine, and experiment will be done later.
Air bearing is characterized by its extremely low friction and cleanliness such that it is widely used especially for spindles with ultra-high rotational speed at several tens of thousands rpm. This paper contributes to design of a static radial air bearing suggesting numerical analysis to anticipate its performances. The numerical analysis is an iteration method based on finite difference formulation of the Reynolds equation. A prototype air bearing has been designed and manufactured. Its load capacity has been measured and compared with the numerical solutions. The result shows good consistency between the experiment and theory, which informs that the numerical analysis can be used as an useful tool to anticipate the performances. Effects of design variables on the bearing performance have been examined by Taguchi's experimental methods using orthogonal array. Number of holes for supplying pressurized air, clearance between shaft and bearing, the hole diameter and bearing length are chosen for the design variables. The result shows that the clearance and the bearing length are the most influential variables while the others can be considered as almost negligible.
In order to provide a novel strategy for long-span bridge health monitoring system design, this paper proposes a novel ultimate bearing capacity ratios based bridge internal force monitoring design method. The bridge ultimate bearing capacity analysis theories are briefly described. Then, based on the ultimate bearing capacity of the structural component, the component ultimate bearing capacity ratio, the uniformity of ultimate bearing capacity ratio, and the reference of component ultimate bearing capacity ratio are defined. Based on the defined indices, the high bearing components can then be found, and the internal force monitoring system can be designed. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the bridge health monitoring system design of the second highway bridge of Wuhu Yangtze river. Through the ultimate bearing capacity analysis of the bridge in eight load conditions, the high bearing components are found based on the proposed method. The bridge internal force monitoring system is then preliminary designed. The results show that the proposed method can provide quantitative criteria for sensors layout. The monitoring components based on the proposed method are consistent with the actual failure process of the bridge, and can reduce the monitoring of low bearing components. For the second highway bridge of Wuhu Yangtze river, only 59 components are designed to be monitored their internal forces. Therefore, the bridge internal force monitoring system based on the ultimate bearing capacity ratio can decrease the number of monitored components and the cost of the whole monitoring system.
In order to evaluate the inlet pressure correctly, the full Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically for the computational domain which covers the cavity region between pads as well as the bearing film. A nonuiform grid system is adopted to reduce the number of grid points, and the numerical solutions are obtained for a wide range of Reynolds number in laminar regime with various values of the distance between pads. The numerical results show that the inlet pressure is significantly affected by Reynolds number and the distance between pads. An expression for the loss coefficient in terms of Reynolds number and non-dimensional distance between pads is obtained on the basis of the numerical results. It is found that the inlet pressure over the whole range of numerical solutions can be fairly accurately estimated by applying the formula for the loss coefficient to the extended Bernoulli equation.
A dynamic analysis using a hybrid finite element method was performed to characterize the effects of a number of manufacturing errors on bearing forces and critical tooth stress in the elements of a planetary gear system. Some tolerance control guidelines for managing bearing forces and critical stress are deduced from the results. The carrier indexing error for the planet assembly and planet runout error are the most critical factors in reducing the planet bearing force and maximizing load sharing, as well as in reducing the critical stress.
An analysis based on the narrow groove theory is not suitable for the case of insufficient number of grooves or of non-rectangular shaped grooves. In this study, we present the solution of the compressible Reynolds equation for the air-lubricated hydrodynamic herringbonegrooved journal bearing with circular shaped grooves. From the results calculated numerically, optimal design values are obtained for the herringbone-grooved journal bearing.
The bearing coupling section of machine tools is the most important factor to determine their static/dynamic stiffness. To ensure the proper performance of machine tools, the static/dynamic stiffness of the rotating system has to be predicted on the design stage. Various parameters of the bearing coupling section, such as the spring element, node number and preload influence the characteristics of rotating systems. This study focuses on the prediction of the static and dynamic stiffness of the rotating system with the bearing coupling section using the finite element (FE) model. MATRIX 27 in ANSYS has been adopted to describe the bearing coupling section of machine tools because the MATRIX 27 can describe the bearing coupling section close to the real object and is applicable to various machine tools. The FE model of the bearing couple section which has the sixteen node using MATRIX 27 was constructed. Comparisons between finite element method (FEM) predictions and experimental results were performed in terms of the static and dynamic stiffness.
A reliability analysis of the axial compressive load bearing capacity of postfire reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets was presented. A 3D finite element (FE) model was built for heat transfer analysis using software ABAQUS. Based on the temperature distribution obtained from the FE analysis, the residual axial compressive load bearing capacity of RC columns was worked out using the section method. Formulas for calculating the residual axial compressive load bearing capacity of the columns after fire exposure and the axial compressive load bearing capacity of postfire columns retrofitted with CFRP sheets were developed. Then the Monte Carlo method was used to analyze the reliability of the axial compressive load bearing capacity of the RC columns retrofitted with CFRP sheets using a code developed in MATLAB. The effects of fire exposure time, load ratio, number of CFRP layers, concrete cover thickness, and longitudinal reinforcement ratio on the reliability of the axial compressive load bearing capacity of the columns after fire were investigated. The results show that within 60 minutes of fire exposure time, the reliability index of the RC columns after retrofitting with two layers of CFRPs can meet the requirements of Chinese code GB 50068 (GB 2001) for safety level II. This method is effective and accurate for the reliability analysis of the axial load bearing capacity of postfire reinforced concrete columns retrofitted with CFRP.
