The first neutral beam injector (NBI-1) has been developed for the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) tokamak. A first long pulse ion source (LPIS-1) has been installed on the NBI-1 for an auxiliary heating and current drive of KSTAR core plasmas. Performance of ion and neutral beam extractions in the LPIS-1 was investigated initially on the KSTAR NBI-1 system, prior to the neutral beam injection into the main plasmas. The ion source consists of a JAEA magnetic bucket plasma generator with multi-pole cusp fields and a set of KAERI prototype-III tetrode accelerators with circular apertures. The inner volume of plasma generator and accelerator column in the LPIS-1 is approximately 123 liters. Final design requirements for the ion source were a 120 kV/ 65 A deuterium beam and a 300 s pulse length. The extraction of ion beams was initiated by the formation of arc plasmas in the LPIS-1, called as an arc-beam extraction method. A stable ion beam extraction of LPIS-1 has been achieved up to an 100 kV/42 A for a 4 s pulse length and an 80 kV/25 A for a 14 s pulse length. Optimum beam perveance of 1.21 microperv has been found at an accelerating voltage of 80 kV. Neutralization efficiency has been measured by using a water flow calorimetry (WFC) method of calorimeter and an operation of bending magnet. The full-energy species of ion beams have been detected by using the diagnostic method of optical multichannel analyzer (OMA). An arc efficiency of the LPIS was 0.6~1.1 A/kW depending on the operating conditions of arc discharge.

The first part is about development of a liquid target for a neutron source, which is designed to overcome many of the limitations of traditional beam-target neutron generators by utilizing a liquid target neutron source. One of the most critical aspects of the beam-target neutron generator is the target integrity under the beam exposure. A liquid target can be a good solution to overcome damage to the target such as target erosion and depletion of hydrogen isotopes in the active layer, especially for the one operating at high neutron fluxes with no need for water cooling. There is no inherent target lifetime for the liquid target neutron generator when used with continuous refreshment of the target surface exposed to the energetic beam. In this work, liquid target containing hydrogen has been developed and tested in vacuum environment. Potentially, liquid targets could allow a point neutron source whose spatial extension is on the order of 1 to $10{\mu}m$. And the second is about the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectrometer which is designed as a five-channel spectral system for ITER main plasma measurement. To develop and verify the design, a two-channel prototype system was fabricated with No. 3 (14.4 nm~31.8 nm) and No. 4 (29.0 nm~60.0 nm) among the five channels. For test of the prototype system, a hollow cathode lamp is used as a light source. The system is composed of a collimating mirror to collect the light from source to slit, and two holographic diffraction gratings with toroidal geometry to diffract and also to collimate the light from the common slit to detectors. The two gratings are positioned at different optical distances and heights as designed. To study the appropriate detector for ITER VUV system, two different electronic detectors of the back-illuminated charge coupled device and the micro-channel plate electron multiplier were installed and the performance has been investigated and compared in the same experimental conditions. The overall system performance was verified by measuring the spectrums.

The ion beam system of 20keV C-W (Cockroft Walton) type composed of the AuGe alloy LMIS(Liquid Metal Ion Source) has been designed and constructed. For the fabrication of the ohmic contact to the n-GaAs, the ion beam extracted from the AuGe alloy source was implanted into the n-GaAs, and it was measured by contact resistivity. The stable AuGe ion beam(2.5\ulcorner/cm\ulcorner was obtained at the extraction voltage of 14.5kV. The measurements of the contact resistivity were done by the TLM (Transmission Line Model) method and the specific contact resistivity was found to be 2.4x10**-5 \ulcornercm\ulcornerfor the implanted sample by the 1.9x10**20/cm**3 and the annealed sample at 30\ulcorner for 2 min.

Accurate evaluation of residual stress is important for stress corrosion cracking assessment. In this paper, electron beam welding experiment is simulated via finite element analysis and the sensitivity of the parameters related to the combined heat source model is investigated. Predicted residual stresses arecompared with measured residual stresses. It is found that the welding efficiency affects the size of the tensile residual stress area and the magnitude of maximum longitudinal residual stress. It is also found that the parameter related to the ratio of energy distributed to the two-dimensional heat source has little effect on the size of tthe tensile residual stress area, but affects the size of the longitudinal residual stress in the center of the weld.

The $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ thin films for the multilayer interference filter application were manufactured by electron beam process. In case of electron beam process with ion source, the anode current was controlled by gas volume ratio of $O_2$ and Ar. Substrate temperature of electron beam deposition without ion source was increased from 100 to $250^{\circ}C$ with $50^{\circ}C$ increment. The surface roughness values of $SiO_2$ thin films was most low value at $200^{\circ}C$ substrate temperature and 0.2 A anode current respectively. And the surface roughness values of $TiO_2$ thin films was most low value at room temperature and 0.2 A anode current repectively. The refractive index of $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ thin films to be deposited with ion source was usually lower than that of thin films without ion source.

A new ion beam extraction system is designed using a simple ion mass filter and a micro mass balance and a QMS based detecting system. A quadrupole Mass Filter is used for selective ion beam formation from inductively coupled high density plasma sources with appropriate electrostatic lens and final analyzing QMS. Also a quartz crystal microbalance is set between a QMF and a QMS to measure the etching and polymerization rate of the mass selected ion beam. An inductively coupled plasma was used as a ion/radical source which had an electron temperature of 4-8 eV and electron density of $4${\times}$10^{11}$#/㎤. A computer interfaced system through 12bit AD-DA board can control the pass ion mass of the qmf by setting RF/DC voltage ratio applied to the quadrupoles so that time modulation of pass ion's mass is possible. So the direct measurements of ion - surface chemistry can be possible in a resolution of $1\AA$/sec based on the qcm's sensitivity. A full set of driving software and hardware setting is successfully carried out to get fundamental plasma information of the ICP source and analysed $Ar^{+}$ beam was detected at the $2^{nd}$ QMS.

In this study, we propose a novel micro-ion engine system. Single plasma source is used for both ion beam source and neutralizing electron source. By changing the electrical connection, either operation can be switched. This micro-ion engine system gives translation motion and attitude control to microspacecraft. The major objective of this study is verification of our concept. Small plasma source of 20 mm diameter was developed. Plasma was sustained by microwave power. Using this plasma source, ion beam extraction and electron emission was successively demonstrated.

Food irradiation is important not only in ensuring safety but also improving antioxidant activity of peaches. Our objective was to establish the best irradiation treatment for peaches by calculating dose distribution using Monte Carlo simulation. 3-D geometry and component densities of peaches, extracted from CT scan, were entered into MCNP to obtain simulated dose distribution. Radiation energies for electron beam were 1.35 MeV (low energy) and 10 MeV (high energy). Co (1.25 MeV) and the Husman irradiator, containing three sealed Cs source rods in an annular array, were used for gamma irradiation. At 1.35 MeV electron beam simulation, electrons penetrated well beyond the peach skin, enough for surface treatment for microorganisms and allergens. At 10 MeV electron beam simulation, for top-beam only treatment, doses at the core were the highest and for double beam treatment, the electron energy was absorbed by the entire sample. At Co source, the radiation doses were presented on the whole area. At Cs source, the dose uniformity ratios were 2.78 for one source and 1.48 for three ones at 120 degrees interval. Proper control of irradiation treatment is critical to establish confidence in the irradiation process.

Experimental tests were performed to estimate velocities of the acoustic signals through prestressed concrete beam and source locations using acoustic emission (AE) techniques. Seven AE sensors are mounted on the surface of 5m length test beam with equal spacing and using Schmidt Hammer AE events are made at 18 locations. The velocities of AE signals are estimated using the time differences of arrival times and the distances between the source locations and the AE sensor locations. In addition, using the Least Square Method, the AE source locations are re-evaluated reversely using both of the arrival times and the velocities of AE signals. Test results show the average velocity of the AE signals is about 4,000 m/sec and the velocity decreased with the increase of the distance from source locations to AE sensors due to the effect of attenuation. Based on the estimation of the source locations, it is observed that the errors of source locations are decreased when the velocities of each AE sensor are used rather than the average velocity.

An automatic sample centering system is underway at the protein crystallography beam line of the Pohang Light Source to improve the efficiency of the crystal screening process. A sample pin which contains a protein crystal is mounted on a goniometer head. Then the crystal should be moved to the center of X-ray beam by controlling the motorized goniometer to obtain diffraction data. Since the X-ray beam is located at the center of the image obtained from the CCD camera when the image of the sample pin is in focus, an auto-focusing algorithm is a very important part in the auto-sample-centering system. However the results of applying several well-known auto focusing algorithms directly to the images are not satisfactory owing to the following factors: misalignment of CCD camera, non-uniform cryo-stream in the background of the image and the supporter of the loop. The performance of an auto-focusing algorithm can be increased if the algorithm is applied to only the loop region identified. Non-uniform cryo-stream and a various illumination condition and a stain, which is shown in the image, are main obstacles to loop region identification. In this paper, a simple loop region identification algorithm, which can solve these problems, is proposed and the effective ness of the proposed scheme is shown by applying the auto-focusing algorithm to the loop region identified.
