In the beam pattern synthesis problem using line source, the relationship between source distribution function and beam pattern may be represented by Fourier transform pair. In this paper, a general method to synthesize the line source distribution for a desired lobe-like beam pattern is presented by developing the nonlinear inversion method based on an iterative sampling technique. This method can be applied to the synthesis of continuously distributed dielectric constants satisfying the desired inverse scattering coefficient patterns when illuminating by TE-polarized and TM-polarized plane waves to arbitrary dielectric material. Furthermore this method can also be applied to the synthesis of transmission line with arbitrary reflection coefficient patterns. Some bandstop spatial filter and dispersive transmission line filter are illustrated for generality.

Towed array SONAR is deformed because it operates in fluid such as an ocean. It especially undergoes significant change in shape as a towing vessel takes a turn. In this case, beam pattern synthesis of the line array is limited, resulting in degradation in quality such as signal-to-noise ratio. This paper presents a modified two-step least squares algorithm based on the two-step least squares method. The shape of the sea-operated line array formation with the towing vessel changing course(angle) was modeled and the algorithm was subsequently applied. While changing course and location of the main lobe in beam pattern was altered, signal-to-noise ratio of steering beam pattern synthesis was analyzed by algorithm (proposed and others). As a result, the proposed algorithm presented improvement in performance by 2dB compared to other algorithms while forming relatively constant beam pattern.

In this paper, a study on beam synthesis technique of conformal array was performed. It is applied to various radar systems that can perform beam steering without deterioration of performance due to beam steering in a general linear arrangement. Unlike the beam synthesis technique in the planar linear array, the conformal array has a radiation element located on a curved surface, so it is necessary to compensate for a difference in length from the radaation element to the wave front surface. In addition, by calculating the offset angle for each radiation element and applying it during actual synthesis, it was possible to predict an accurate beam pattern. In this paper, length compensation and offset angle were calculated and applied to beam pattern synthesis to perform beam pattern comparison, and performance was compared through mathematical analysis.

An active phased array antennas can not only electrically steer the beam by controlling the weighting of the excitation signal, but can also form a pattern null in the direction of the interference source. The weight of the excitation signal to steer the main beam can be easily calculated based on the position of the radiating element. In addition, the weight of the excited signal for pattern null formation can also be calculated by setting the required radiation pattern and using WLSM(Weighted Least Squares Method). However, in a general wireless communication network environment, the location of the interference source is unknown. Therefore, an adaptive pattern null synthesis is needed. In this paper, it was confirmed that pattern null synthesis according to the required radiation characteristic was possible. And based on this, adaptive pattern null synthesis into the direction of an interference source was studied using a binary search algorithm based on observation area. As a result of conducting a simulation based on the presented technique, it was confirmed that adaptive pattern null forming into the direction of an interference is possible in efficient way.

Sub-arrays of arbitrary conformal array have different geometric shape through steering direction, thus the beam patterns of sub-arrays are always non-uniform. In this paper, we apply the beam pattern synthesis method using convex optimization into the conformal array, and shows the improvement of uniformity of beam performance. The simulation is performed with the conformal array of cut-sphere shape. As a result, the standard deviation of 3 dB beamwidth in elevation is greatly reduced but the directivity index is also reduced. To alleviate this trade-off, we propose a convex optimization using a shading function.

An improved genetic algorithm was proposed for pattern synthesis of an adaptive beam forming system using phased array antennas. The proposed genetic algorithm is an algorithm that adds acquired characteristics procedure to solve local optimization using the diversity. The performance of the proposed genetic algorithm is verified through the problem of finding a suitable chromosome for a picture composed of binary. And it is confirmed that it is suitable for the adaptive beam forming system based on the performance problem of combining main beam and two pattern nulls.

Recently, mechanically beam-steering microstrip patch array antenna using MEMS technology is developed and tested. In this paper as an application of developed antenna, new radiation pattern synthesis method far beam-steering antenna without phase-shifter is proposed, and applied to synthesis of desired beam shape. Niching genetic algorithm using Restricted Competition Selection (RCS) is used for radiation pattern optimization. This approach can be applied to design of array antenna for meet EMC standard and through proposed method specific beam shapes can be synthesized.
In this paper, we propose a broadband beamforming method using the Spatial Response Variation (SRV) which is defined to measure the fluctuation of the array spatial response within the desired frequency band. By applying the SRV to regularization term, we achieve a good quality main beam width variation less than 1 degree within the desired frequency band. In design experiments, we show that the proposed method is better than the existing method.
The objective of this study is to optimize the shape of doubly curved surface where a conformal array is equipped. That surface is modeled with a double-ellipsoid solid controlled by four parameters. By analyzing the performance of the conformal array beams with the beam pattern synthesis, two design parameters are determined. Then, we define the weighted object function which is formulated as the sum of sharp indexes for directivity index, the elevation resolution, and the bearing resolution. The direct calculation on all grids is used to evaluate the weighted object function and seek the optimal value of two design parameters when the weightings are given. In the simulation, four kinds of weighting cases are respectively applied to evaluate the weighted object function. The optimal shapes of double-ellipsoid solid are shown in each case. Especially, when the uniform weightings are used, the double-ellipsoid solid with more smooth surface is obtained.

This paper presents the design and fabrication of a shaped-beam array antenna which will be used for a PCS basestation using structure that is coupled to a microstrip line by an aperture on the interening ground plane. The shaped-beam pattern is obtained by an antenna synthesis method. An array antenna considering the mutual coupling between array elements patches) and a feeding network are designed by CAD tools. The feeding network is designed by using the Wilkinson power divider to obtain the optimized shaped-beam. The designed results are compared with the measured data.
