  • The aim of this research is reinforcing of concrete with variety of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) configurations and investigates the load capacity and ductility of these connections using an experimental investigation. Six scaled-down RC exterior joints were tested under moderately monotonic loads. The results show that, the shape of the FRP had a different effect on the joint capacity and the connection ductility coefficient. The greatest effect on increasing the ductility factor was seen in the sample where two reinforcement plates were used on both sides of the beam web (RCS5 sample). For the sample with the presence of FRP plates at the top and bottom of the beam (RCS3 sample), the ductility factor was reduced even the load capacity of this sample increased. Except for the RCS3 sample, the rest of the samples exhibited an increase in the ductility factor due to the FRP reinforcement.

  • In this thesis, the field test by truck load and the structural analysis were performed on a preflex beam bridge to investigate the load carrying capacity. From the field test and the structural analysis results, K(corrective factor) and $P_n$(load carrying capacity) of the preflex beam bridges were studied, and these factors were applied to the load carrying capacity assessment of the preflex bridges.

  • There are several ways of decreasing the vibration energy of structures. One of which is special damping layers made of various viscoelastic materials are widely applied in structures subjected to dynamic loading. In this study, a cantilever beam, partially covered by damping a constraining layers, is investigated by using Finite Element method (FEM). The frequency and system loss factor are evaluated. The effects of different physical and geometrical parameters on the natural frequency and system loss factors are discussed.

  • This paper carries out the progressive collapse analysis of stainless steel composite beam-to-column joint sub-models and moment-resisting frames under column removal scenarios. The static flexural response of composite joint sub-models with damaged columns was initially explored via finite element methods, which was validated by independent experimental results and discussed in terms of moment-rotation relationships, plastic hinge behaviour and catenary actions. Simplified finite element methods were then proposed and applied to the frame analysis which aimed to elaborate the progressive collapse response at the frame level. Nonlinear static and dynamic analysis were employed to evaluate the dynamic increase factor (DIF) for stainless steel composite frames. The results suggest that the catenary action effect plays an important role in preventing the damaged structure from dramatic collapse. The beam-to-column joints could be critical components that influence the capacity of composite frames and dominate the determination of dynamic increase factor. The current design guidance is non-conservative to provide proper DIF for stainless steel composite frames, and thus new DIF curves are expected to be proposed.

  • Stepped I-beams having increased moment of inertia at one end (singly stepped beam) or both ends (doubly stepped beams) can often be seen in construction of bridges due to material economy and easy fabrication of the section. This paper presents the results of the parametric study of lateral torsional buckling of monosymmetric stepped I-beams with constant depth subjected to uniform moment. Design recommendations were made based on the finite element results of the models having different combinations of monosymmetric ratio, stepped length ratio, flange thickness ratio and flange width ratio. The proposed approximation is acceptable based on the parameters given having mostly conservative results. The proposed equation can be further used to extend the study to different loading conditions.

  • The Equivalent vehicle load factors of Beams and Girders on parking garage structure are proposed in this study. Without taking the sophisticated numerical analysis for the concentrated wheel loads, the design member forces of beam and girder can be easily calculated only with those for the distributed load by using the constructed relationships between the equivalent vehicle load factor and the length of member. Besides, the standard vehicle with total weight of 2.4ton is designed based on the review of many foreign design codes for parking garage and the investigation of small to medium vehicles made in Korea. Finally the efficiency and the reliability of the proposed equivalent vehicle load factors are demonstrated through the application of the typical beam and girder.

  • This study presents the experimental results of twenty three reinforced concrete beams with rectangular web openings externally strengthened with Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) composites bonded around openings. All tested beams had the same geometry and reinforcement details. At openings locations, the stirrups intercepted the openings were cut during fabrication of reinforcement cage to simulate the condition of inclusion of an opening in an existing beam. Several design parameters are considered including the opening dimensions and location in the shear zone, the wrapping configurations, and the amount and the type of the FRP composites in the vicinity of the openings. The wrapping configurations of FRP included: sheets, strips, U-shape strips, and U-shape strips with bundles of FRP strands placed at the top and sides of the beam forming a fan under the strips to achieve closed wrapping. The effect of these parameters on the failure modes, the ultimate load, and the beam stiffness were investigated. The shear contribution of FRP on the shear capacity of tested beams with web openings was estimated according to ACI Committee 440-08, Canadian Standards S6-06, and Khalifa et al. model and examined against the test results. A modification factor to account for the dimensions of opening chords was applied to the predicted gain in the shear capacity according to ACI 440-08 and CSA S6-06 for bonded Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) around openings. The analytical results after incorporating the modification factor into the codes guidelines showed good agreement with the test results.

  • The important parameters deciding the fluctuation of Accumulation style surgical operation of ventriculus laser beam are smoothing capacitor, frequency and he characteristics of laser resonator. In this thesis, we control the fluctuation of medical $CO_2C$ laser in realtime by changing Duty-Ratio of IGBT and switching frequency with fixed the smoothing capacitor to improve the fluctuation of laser beam. We detect the light on laser resonator using a CdS photo sensor to improve ripple factor of laser beam and feedback fluctuated signals refined by a band pass filter into the control circuit to stabilize fluctuation actively. There is much to be desired in the realtime controlling technique of the light on Accumulation style surgical operation of ventriculus laser discharge tube in electrical signal. We propose switching control technique with microprocessor and photo sensing technique by controlling switch devices optimum operation and feedback signals detected by a photo sensor into the laser power supply in order to improve ripple factor of the $CO_2$ laser beam.

  • Most ships and offshore structures are equipped with a variety of pipes, which inevitably contain curved portions. While it has been a usual practice to conduct bending stress analyses of these curved pipes using the straight-beam theory, this paper adopts two different types of finite elements, straight-beam elements and two-dimensional shell elements, for finite element analyses of a variety of curved pipes. It then compares the analysis results for two different types of elements to determine correction factors, which can be used to transform the bending displacements and bending stresses obtained by straight-beam elements to those obtainable by two-dimensional shell elements. The paper ends with a practical suggestion on how to efficiently use these correction factors to estimate the combined axial and normal stresses in a curved portion of a pipe.
