  • For count responses, the situation of excess zeros often occurs in various research fields. Zero-inflated model is a common choice for modeling such count data. Bayesian inference for the zero-inflated model has long been recognized as a hard problem because the form of conditional posterior distribution is not in closed form. Recently, however, Pillow and Scott (2012) and Polson et al. (2013) proposed a Pólya-Gamma data-augmentation strategy for logistic and negative binomial models, facilitating Bayesian inference for the zero-inflated model. We apply Bayesian zero-inflated negative binomial regression model to longitudinal pharmaceutical data which have been previously analyzed by Min and Agresti (2005). To facilitate posterior sampling for longitudinal zero-inflated model, we use the Pólya-Gamma data-augmentation strategy.

  • This paper studies Bayesian pooling for analysis of categorical data from small areas. Many surveys consist of categorical data collected on a contingency table in each area. Statistical inference for small areas requires considerable care because the subpopulation sample sizes are usually very small. Typically we use the hierarchical Bayesian model for pooling subpopulation data. However, the customary hierarchical Bayesian models may specify more exchangeability than warranted. We, therefore, investigate the effects of pooling in hierarchical Bayesian modeling for the contingency table from small areas. In specific, this paper focuses on the methods of direct or indirect pooling of categorical data collected on a contingency table in each area through Dirichlet priors. We compare the pooling effects of hierarchical Bayesian models by fitting the simulated data. The analysis is carried out using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop key performance indicators (KPIs) for home care nursing (HCN) based on a balanced scorecard, and to construct a performance prediction model of strategic objectives using the Bayesian Belief Network (BBN). Methods: This methodological study included four steps: establishment of KPIs, performance prediction modeling, development of a performance prediction model using BBN, and simulation of a suggested nursing management strategy. An HCN expert group and a staff group participated. The content validity index was analyzed using STATA 13.0, and BBN was analyzed using HUGIN 8.0. Results: We generated a list of KPIs composed of 4 perspectives, 10 strategic objectives, and 31 KPIs. In the validity test of the performance prediction model, the factor with the greatest variance for increasing profit was maximum cost reduction of HCN services. The factor with the smallest variance for increasing profit was a minimum image improvement for HCN. During sensitivity analysis, the probability of the expert group did not affect the sensitivity. Furthermore, simulation of a 10% image improvement predicted the most effective way to increase profit. Conclusion: KPIs of HCN can estimate financial and non-financial performance. The performance prediction model for HCN will be useful to improve performance.

  • It is not always easy to estimate the parameters in hydrologic models due to insufficient hydrologic data when hydraulic structures are designed or water resources plan are established, uncertainty analysis, therefore, are inevitably needed to examine reliability for the estimated results. With regard to this point, this study applies a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo scheme to the NWS-PC rainfall-runoff model that has been widely used, and a case study is performed in Soyang Dam watershed in Korea. The NWS-PC model is calibrated against observed daily runoff, and thirteen parameters in the model are optimized as well as posterior distributions associated with each parameter are derived. The Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo shows a improved result in terms of statistical performance measures and graphical examination. The patterns of runoff can be influenced by various factors and the Bayesian approaches are capable of translating the uncertainties into parameter uncertainties. One could provide against an expected runoff event by utilizing information driven by Bayesian methods. Therefore, the rainfall-runoff analysis coupled with the uncertainty analysis can give us an insight in evaluating flood risk and dam size in a reasonable way.

  • This paper studies a Bayesian ordered multiple linear regression model with skew normal error. It is reasonable that the kind of inherent information available in an applied regression requires some constraints on the coefficients to be estimated. In addition, the assumption of normality of the errors is sometimes not appropriate in the real data. Therefore, to explain such situations more flexibly, we use the skew-normal distribution given by Sahu et al. (The Canadian Journal of Statistics, 31, 129-150, 2003) for error-terms including normal distribution. For Bayesian methodology, the Markov chain Monte Carlo method is employed to resolve complicated integration problems. Also, under the improper priors, the propriety of the associated posterior density is shown. Our Bayesian proposed model is applied to NZAPB's apple data. For model comparison between the skew normal error model and the normal error model, we use the Bayes factor and deviance information criterion given by Spiegelhalter et al. (Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B (Statistical Methodology), 64, 583-639, 2002). We also consider the problem of detecting an influential point concerning skewness using Bayes factors. Finally, concluding remarks are discussed.

  • Nickel base Alloy X-750, which is used as fastener parts in light-water reactor (LWR), has experienced many failures by environmentally assisted cracking (EAC). In order to improve the reliability of passive components for nuclear power plants (NPP's), it is necessary to study the failure mechanism and to predict crack growth behavior by developing a probabilistic failure model. In this study, The Bayesian inference was employed to reduce the uncertainties contained in EAC modeling parameters that have been established from experiments with Alloy X-750. Corrosion fatigue crack growth rate model (FCGR) was developed by fitting into Paris' Law of measured data from the several fatigue tests conducted either in constant load or constant ΔK mode. These parameters characterizing the corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior of X-750 were successfully updated to reduce the uncertainty in the model by using the Bayesian inference method. It is demonstrated that probabilistic failure models for passive components can be developed by updating a laboratory model with field-inspection data, when crack growth rates (CGRs) are low and multiple inspections can be made prior to the component failure.

  • The prediction error variances for frequencies are usually considered as unknown in the Bayesian system identification process. However, the error variances for mode shapes are taken as known to reduce the dimension of an identification problem. The present study attempts to explore the effectiveness of Bayesian approach of model parameters updating using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique considering the prediction error variances for both the frequencies and mode shapes. To remove the ergodicity of Markov Chain, the posterior distribution is obtained by Gaussian Random walk over the proposal distribution. The prior distributions of prediction error variances of modal evidences are implemented through inverse gamma distribution to assess the effectiveness of estimation of posterior values of model parameters. The issue of incomplete data that makes the problem ill-conditioned and the associated singularity problem is prudently dealt in by adopting a regularization technique. The proposed approach is demonstrated numerically by considering an eight-storey frame model with both complete and incomplete modal data sets. Further, to study the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a comparative study with regard to accuracy and computational efficacy of the proposed approach is made with the Sequential Monte Carlo approach of model parameter updating.

  • In order to estimate parameter uncertainty of hydrological models, the consideration of the likelihood functions which provide reliable parameters of model is necessary. In this study, the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method with informal likelihood functions is used to analyze the uncertainty of parameters of the SURR model for estimating the hourly streamflow of Gunnam station of Imjin basin, Korea. Three events were used to calibrate and one event was used to validate the posterior distributions of parameters. Moreover, the performance of four informal likelihood functions (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, Normalized absolute error, Index of agreement, and Chiew-McMahon efficiency) on uncertainty of parameter is assessed. The indicators used to assess the uncertainty of the streamflow simulation were P-factor (percentage of observed streamflow included in the uncertainty interval) and R-factor (the average width of the uncertainty interval). The results showed that the sensitivities of parameters strongly depend on the likelihood functions and vary for different likelihood functions. The uncertainty bounds illustrated the slight differences from various likelihood functions. This study confirms the importance of the likelihood function selection in the application of Bayesian MCMC to the uncertainty assessment of the SURR model.

  • In this study, we applied the Bayesian Network for the case of the mode choice models using the Seoul metropolitan area's house trip survey Data. Sex and age were used lot the independent variables for the explanation or the mode choice, and the relationships between the mode choice and the travellers' social characteristics were identified by the Bayesian Network. Furthermore, trip and mode's characteristics such as time and fare were also used for independent variables and the mode choice models were developed. It was found that the Bayesian Network were useful tool to overcome the problems which were in the traditional mode choice models. In particular, the various transport policies could be evaluated in the very short time by the established relation-ships. It is expected that the Bayesian Network will be utilized as the important tools for the transport analysis.
