  • Replacement of sensor nodes for monitoring a wide range area such as mountains and forests needs a lot of time and cost. Using new and renewable energy around them can maximize the lifetime of wireless sensor networks, in which solar energy is infinite energy source that is available in 365 days. To design these sensor networks, solar energy model is essential and to estimate and analyze the overall photovoltaic energy. Using this, we can figure out important data such as the size and performance of solar panel needed. However, existing researches for solar energy harvesting consider parts of many factors to influence the quantity of solar energy gathered. In this paper, we suggest advanced solar energy harvesting model considering angular loss (solar cell panel), overheat loss (solar cell), rechargeable battery heat and cooling for each monthly properties. From our experimental results according to outdoor temperature, panel angle and the surface temperature of solar panel, we show these impact factors are correctly configured.

  • Murrah and NiliRavi are the important North Indian buffalo breeds occupying the prominent position of being the highest milk producers. These breeds are more or less similar at morphological as well as physiological levels. The technique of RAPD-PCR was applied in the present study to identify a battery of suitable random primers to detect genetic polymorphism, elucidation of the genetic structure and rapid assessment of the differences in the genetic composition of these two breeds. A total of 50 random primers were screened in 24 animals each of Murrah and NiliRavi buffaloes to generate RAPD patterns. Of these, 26 (52%) primers amplified the buffalo genome generating 263 reproducible bands. The number of polymorphic bands for the 26 chosen RAPD primers varied from 3 (OPG 06 and B4) to 26 (OPJ 04) with an average of 10.1 bands per primer and size range of 0.2 to 3.2 kb. DNA was also pooled and analyzed to search for population specific markers. Two breed specific RAPD alleles were observed in each of Murrah (OPA02 and OPG16) and NiliRavi (OPG09) DNA pools. RAPD profiles revealed that 11 (4.2%) bands were common to all the 48 individuals of Murrah and NiliRavi buffaloes. Pair-wise band sharing calculated among the individual animals indicated considerable homogeneity of individuals within the breeds. Within breed, band sharing values were relatively greater than those of interbreed values. The low genetic distance (Nei's) value (0.109) estimated in this study is in accordance with the origin and geographical distribution of these breeds. The RAPD analysis indicated high level of genetic similarity between these two important North Indian buffalo breeds.

  • In Solar-powered wireless sensor networks(SP-WSN), the battery is periodically charged, so the best use of harvested energy is more important, rather than minimizing energy consumption. Meanwhile, as is well known, the reliability of communication between sensor nodes is very limited due to the resource-constraint of sensor nodes. In this paper, we propose an advanced FEC (forward error correction) scheme which can give SP-WSN more reliability for communication. Firstly, the proposed scheme uses energy modeling to calculate the amount of surplus energy which can be utilized for extra operations, and then determines the number of additional parity bits according to this amount of surplus energy. At the same time, link quality modeling calculates the optimal parity bits for error recovery in the current data communication environment. Finally, by considering these two parity sizes, it is possible to determine the optimal parity size that can maximize the data reliability without affecting the node black out. Performance verification was performed by comparing the amount of data collected at the sink and the number of outage nodes with other schemes.

  • The measurement of physicochemical properties of ASR incineration ash has been carried dot and the preparation of light-weight material has also been performed using ASR ash for recycling point of view as building or construction materials. For this aim, chemical composition, particle size distribution, and heavy metal leachability were examined for 2 bottom ashes and 4 fly ashes obtained from the domestic ASR incinerator. In the present work, attempt has been made to prepare the lightweight material using boiler ash as a raw material, which is prepared by forming the mixture of boiler ash, lightweisht filler and inorganic binder and followed by calcination at elevated temperature. As a result, the content of Cu in bottom ash was as high as about 3wt% so that the recovery of Cu from ash was required. The major compound of SDR #5 and Bag filter #6 was found to be $CaCl_2{\cdot}Ca(OH)_2{\cdot}H_2O\;and\;CaCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, respectively. It is thought that heavy metal teachability of lightweight material prepared with boiler ash was significantly decreased due to the encapsulation or stabilization of heavy metal compounds.

  • Two milling methods, dry vibration milling and wet ball milling, were used to prepare $Na_{2/3}(Ni_{1/3}Mn_{2/3})O_2$ powders as a cathode material for sodium ion batteries. The morphology and electrochemical property of the two powders with different milling processes were compared to each other. The particle size is less than $1{\mu}m$ in the dry vibration milled powder, while lots of larger particles than $1{\mu}m$ were found in the wet ball milled one. The single phase of $Na_{2/3}(Ni_{1/3}Mn_{2/3})O_2$ was obtained in the temperature range of $875{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. The discharge capacity and discharge voltage of the powder prepared by the dry process were higher than those of one prepared by the wet process.

  • In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP)-based gel polymer electrolyte incorporating nano-size $Al_2O_3$ ceramic particle was prepared by electrospinning. The gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) incorporated with $Al_2O_3$ ceramic particle showed higher ionic conductivity of $9.5{\times}10^{-2}Scm^{-1}$ than pure PVdF-HFP GPE without ceramic particle and improved the electrochemical stability up to 5.2 V. The GPEs were assembled with $LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ (NMC) cathode for electrochemical test. The GPE batteries at 0.1 C-rate delivered $168.2mAh\;g^{-1}$ for pure GPE and $189.6mAh\;g^{-1}$ for hybrid GPE, respectively. Therefore, the incorporation of high dielectric constant ceramic particle will be good strategy to enhance the stability and electrochemical properties of lithium ion gel polymer batteries.

  • One of the fundamental requirements of entertainment applications is interactivity with users. The mobile device such as the smartphone, however, does not guarantee it due to the limit of the application processor's computing power, memory size and available electric power of the battery. This paper proposes a methodology to boost responsiveness of interactive applications by taking advantage of the parallel architecture of mobile devices which, for instance, have dual-core, quad-core or octa-core. To harness the multi-core architecture, it exploits the POSIX thread, a platform-independent thread library to be able to be used in various mobile platforms such as Android, iOS, etc. As a useful application example of the methodology, a heavy matrix calculation function was transformed to a parallelized version which showed around 2.5 ~ 3 times faster than the original version in a real-world usage environment.

  • In this paper, we introduce SlimSRP, an ultra-low-power digital signal processor (DSP) solution for mobile audio and voice applications. So far, application processors (APs) have taken charge of all the tasks in mobile devices. However, they have suffered from short battery life problems to deal with complex usage scenarios, such as always-on voice trigger with continuous audio playback. From extensive analysis of audio and voice application characteristics, SlimSRP is designed to relive the performance and power burden of APs. It employs three-issue VLIW architecture, and the major low-power and high-performance techniques include: (1) an optimized register-file architecture friendly for constants generation, (2) a powerful instruction set to reduce the number of register file accesses and (3) a unique instruction compression scheme that contributes to saved memory size and reduced cache miss. An implementation of SlimSRP runs at up to 200MHz and the logic occupies 95K NAND2 gates in Samsung 28LPP process. The experimental results demonstrate that a MP3 decoder application with a 128kbps 44.1kHz input can run at 5.1MHz and the logic consumes only 22uW/MHz.
