The purpose of this article is to offer a guideline for residence planning for Koreans living in the United States. To achieve the goal, this article examines the Korean family's satisfaction rates of interior design and living conditions of houses in American cities, with a case study of families in Columbia, MO. A total of 105 valid samples(126 collected) out of 200 survey questionnaires distributed was acquired and processed with the statistical-aid software SPSS PC+ window version 14.0. The survey was analyzed using frequency, percentages, means, standard deviations, and multiple response analysis. The results are as follow: 1) Most of the Koreans preferred interior design and environment similar to their previous Korean residences. 2) Participants were not satisfied with partial/indirect lightings typical in the United States and desired more bright illuminating lights. 3) Participants kept their habit of taking off shoes indoors while living in the United States, therefore when designing a house for Koreans living in the U.S., designers should take this into account when designing for Korean residents. 4) Among the American interior elements, storage such as walk-in closets and bathroom cabinets were highly demanded by Koreans, thus possibly to be adopted to Korean houses. Researchers expect the results of this study would contribute to supplying comfortable and convenient living environments to those Koreans living in the United States.
As the increase in quantity of apartments has been stable, consumers' needs in housing quality become more diverse. According to the changes in the tendency of residents, construction companies has developed brands of apartment buildings with the concepts of LOHAS, well-being, ergonomics, ubiquitous. However, these trends has been focusing on the Capital area, and becoming fixed and typical in the way of delux quality, large-sized houses and a healthful residence. For that reason, this research is about survey on the needs of the local apartment residents, especially in Daegu. This analysis of their preferences will furnish basic data and offer possible interior plans to building companies making inroads into the Daegu apartment market. This research is based on the questionnaire forms which had been collected for two months(in Aug.-Oct.) of 2005 in Daegu and the amount of the samples is 135. All of them are the residents of the apartments where they moved in after 2000. The contents of this research include the evaluation of plane composition and practicality, interior finishing and design, and spaces for items. The results of this research show that the interior design and finishing materials of apartments in Daegu should be improved and the drainage and uncleanness of bathroom also need to be considered, much like the results of Seoul area. However, regarding the higher age range and life stage, the bedroom 2 needs to be planned for a study and the design of livingroom is prefered to be widely open. Besides, comparing with those in Seoul, the residents in Daegu demand that spaces for things (especially those in secondary kitchen and dress room) be more organized and convenient.
The purpose of this study is to find out the spatial characteristics of the multi-housing units in Seoul and Kyung-gi area since 2006. Literature review and content analysis were used for this study and 82units of the big size over $165m^2$ were analyzed to review such design characteristics as spatial composition, layout and linkage. Through this study, the following conclusions have been reached; 1) Most unit plans had 4LDK and 3bath types including family room as a public space. This results shows that family-room and bathroom has recently become more important than number of rooms in multi-housing units planning. 2) Diversity of plan figures such as mass-mixing, mass-separation and polygons(L, V-type)was showed in most unit plan, breaking from the standardized forms of box types. 3) Intermediated spaces such as foyers and halls in entrance zone were planned and sub-entrance into kitchen were planned for the various types of circulation and work-efficiency. Cases had private space separated from public space, the dispersion of rooms with the increase of connection by corridors, L-DK meaning the living room isolated from the dining and kitchen, partially located living room for a view in area distribution. The spatial planning of master-zone mostly consists of the types of two-rooms and an entry into a foyer(library, dress-powder room, bathroom and master bedroom). This study has a significant meaning on grasping current trend in Korean multi-housing and to provide information for future direction on housing-unit design.
The purpose of this study is to present the design guidelines of residential unit for the elderly by investigating their needs and preferences. The results of this study will be utilized to develop the alternative elderly housing which is appropriate for the Korean culture. To perform an empirical analysis, the existing data collected in 2000 for the study of silver industry In Ulsan were used. The subjects were 292 elderly aged 65 and over living in Ulsan. Statistics employed for the analysis were frequencies, percentage, and Chi-squared test with cross-tabulations. About 70% of the elderly respondents preferred more than 49.5$m^2$(15-pyung) for the size of residential unit and about 50% of them wanted to have bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room In the unit. Most elderly (72%) did not prefer to select interior finishes for their units by themselves. Surprisingly, the elderly did not want to bring their own furniture when relocating to the elderly housing, which was somewhat different result from previous studies. There were significant differences between preferred unit size and level of education, income, and living with or without spouse. Also, income and health status were the characteristics of elderly which made differences in preferred space composition.

If human beings could make friends with nature, it would be a truly wellbeing. This project has selected the design concept under the supposition that human beings and the nature become friends. This residential house, which is consisted of one ground floor and two underground floors, is confronting the mountains that surround the residential complex. Residents can enjoy viewing the mountains from the living room. The garden is created by using this given environment in maximum. The walls are made up with rocks, and a small pond is formed with water from the mountain, presenting another attractive sight. Through the connection rather than the break between mountain and garden, living room and garden, and again garden and mountain, the dialogue with nature was attempted. The water of the pond in the garden flows down along the walls and creates another water space at the gate area of the house. Passing through the entrance, there are a living room, a kitchen, a bedroom for spouses, a common bathroom, and a library on the ground floor. On the second floor, there are two rooms, a bathroom, and a mini living room. The platform of living room on the 1st floor is lowered to produce the comfortable living room with the hearth. From the view of living room, the garden with full feeling of nature can give a good emotional rest for modem people who want the mental relaxation. The marble stones are used as its material to present rich texture and sophisticated image presentation. The hearth in the living room is harmonized with high-tech electronic home appliances and surrounding accessories. On the kitchen, the high-glossy materials are used to express the external appearance neatly and the depository function is more improved for housewives.
