The most efficient system for converting heat to electricity, AMTEC (Alkali Metal Thermal-to-Electric Convertor), is a device that directly converts heat energy to electricity using an alkali metal (sodium) as the working fluid. The AMTEC consists of a low pressure chamber, high pressure chamber, BASE (Beta-Alumina Solid Electrolyte), and artery wick. The main heat loss of the AMTEC system occurs in the low pressure chamber. A high power generation rate is thought to be obtainable by using a high temperature in the BASE. Therefore, to reduce the radiation heat loss, 6 types of radiation shields were examined to reduce the radiative heat loss in the low pressure chamber. The power generation rate of the AMTEC varied depending on the shape of the radiation shield. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analyses were carried out to optimize the shape of the radiation shield. As a result, the optimum radiation shield was found to consist of a curvature formed at the vertical point, in which case the dimensionless temperature (condenser temperature/BASE temperature) is approximately 0.665 and the maximum power generated is calculated to be 17.69W. Increasing the distance beween the BASE and condenser leads to an increase in the power generated, and the power generated with the longest distance was 17.58 W. The shields with multiple holes and multiple horizontal layers showed power reduction rates of 0.91 W and 2.06 W, respectively.

Seismic-design procedures for walls require that the confinement in the critical (plastic hinge) regions should extend over a length in the compression zone of the cross section at the wall base where concrete strains in the Ultimate Limit State (ULS) exceed the limit of 0.0035. In a performance-based framework, confinement is linked to required curvature ductility so that the drift demand at the performance point of the structure for the design earthquake may be met. However, performance of flexural walls in the recent earthquakes in Chile (2010) and Christchurch (2011) indicates that the actual compression strains in the critical regions of many structural walls were higher than estimated, being responsible for several of the reported failures by toe crushing. In this study, the method of estimating the confined region and magnitude of compression strain demands in slender walls are revisited. The objective is to account for a newly identified kinematic interaction between the normal strains that arise in the compression zone, and the lumped rotations that occur at the other end of the wall base due to penetration of bar tension yielding into the supporting anchorage. Design charts estimating the amount of yield penetration in terms of the resulting lumped rotation at the wall base are used to quantify the increased demands for compression strain in the critical section. The estimated strain increase may exceed by more than 30% the base value estimated from the existing design expressions, which explains the frequently reported occurrence of toe crushing even in well confined slender walls under high drift demands. Example cases are included in the presentation to illustrate the behavioral parametric trends and implications in seismic design of walls.

NiCrAlY/YSZ(8wt%$Y_2O_3-ZrO_2$) functionally graded thermal barrier coating (FGC) layers on a Co-base superalloy (HAYNESS 188) substrate were fabstrate were fabicated using Ar shielded single torch air plasma spraying method. Functional grading with the stepwise compositional change throughout layer thickness. Microstructural observation trvealed a successful fabrication of NiCrAlY/YSZ FGC. From the results of the curvature measurement, adhesive strength measurement and thermal shock test for the FGC, it was concluded that the optimum conditions of functionally graded coating layer thinkness and compositional pattern exit to enhance the properties of FGC, which is closely related to the internal residual stess distribution witin it.
Let $E{\rightarrow}M$ be an arbitrary vector bundle of rank k over a Riemannian manifold M equipped with a fiber metric and a compatible connection $D^E$. R. Albuquerque constructed a general class of (two-weights) spherically symmetric metrics on E. In this paper, we give a characterization of locally symmetric spherically symmetric metrics on E in the case when $D^E$ is flat. We study also the Einstein property on E proving, among other results, that if $k{\geq}2$ and the base manifold is Einstein with positive constant scalar curvature, then there is a 1-parameter family of Einstein spherically symmetric metrics on E, which are not Ricci-flat.
In this paper, we study Riemannian submersions whose total manifold admits h-almost Ricci-Yamabe soliton. We characterize the fibers of the submersion and see under what conditions the fibers form h-almost Ricci-Yamabe soliton. Moreover, we find the necessary condition for the base manifold to be an h-almost Ricci-Yamabe soliton and Einstein manifold. Later, we compute scalar curvature of the total manifold and using this we find the necessary condition for h-almost Yamabe solition to be shrinking, expanding and steady. At the end, we give a non-trivial example.

This paper presents the hydraulic design an impeller and radial diffuser of a high-pressure multistage pump for reverse osmosis. The flow distribution and hydraulic performance for the meridional design of the impeller were analyzed numerically. Optimization was conducted based on the response surface method by varying the hub and shroud meridional curvatures, while maintaining the impeller outlet diameter, outlet width, and eye diameter constant. The analysis results of the head and efficiency with the variation in the impeller meridional profile showed that angle of the front shroud near the impeller outlet (${\varepsilon}Ds$) had the highest effect on head increase, while the hub inlet length ($d_{1i}$) and shroud curvature (Rds) had the highest effect on efficiency. From the meridional profile variation, an approximately 0.5% increase in efficiency was observed compared with the base model (case 25).
In a tall reinforced concrete (RC) core wall system subjected to strong ground motions, inelastic behavior near the base as well as mid-height of the wall is possible. Generally, the formation of plastic hinge in a core wall system may lead to extensive damage and significant repairing cost. A new configuration of core structures consisting of buckling restrained braced frames (BRBFs) and RC walls is an interesting idea in tall building seismic design. This concept can be used in the plan configuration of tall core wall systems. In this study, tall buildings with different configurations of combined core systems were designed and analyzed. Nonlinear time history analysis at severe earthquake level was performed and the results were compared for different configurations. The results demonstrate that using enough BRBFs can reduce the large curvature ductility demand at the base and mid-height of RC core wall systems and also can reduce the maximum inter-story drift ratio. For a better investigation of the structural behavior, the probabilistic approach can lead to in-depth insight. Therefore, incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) curves were calculated to assess the performance. Fragility curves at different limit states were then extracted and compared. Mean IDA curves demonstrate better behavior for a combined system, compared with conventional RC core wall systems. Collapse margin ratio for a RC core wall only system and RC core with enough BRBFs were almost 1.05 and 1.92 respectively. Therefore, it appears that using one RC core wall combined with enough BRBF core is an effective idea to achieve more confidence against tall building collapse and the results demonstrated the potential of the proposed system.
In this study, an unbraced five-story steel-framed structure was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to understand the features of structural behavior for the arrangement of semi-rigid connections. An inelastic time history analysis of structural models was performed, wherein all the connections were idealized as fully rigid and semi-rigid. Additionally, horizontal and vertical arrangements of semi-rigid connections were used for the models. A fiber model was utilized for the moment-curvature relationship of a steel beam and a column, a three-parameter power model for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection, and a three-parameter model for the hysteretic behavior of a steel beam, column, and connection. The base-shear force, top displacement, story drift, required ductility for the connection, maximum bending moment of the column, beam, and connection, and distribution of the plastic hinge were investigated using four earthquake excitations with peak ground acceleration for a mean return period of 2,400 years and for the maximum base-shear force in the pushover analysis of a 5% story drift. The maximum base-shear force and story drift decreased with the outer vertical distribution of the semi-rigid connection, and the required ductility for the connection decreased with the higher horizontal distribution of the semi-rigid connection. The location of the maximum story drift differed in the pushover analysis and the time history analysis, and the magnitude was overestimated in the pushover analysis. The outer vertical distribution of the semi-rigid connection was recommended for the base-shear force, story drift, and required ductility for the connection.
In order to investigate the effect of inorganic dielectric fine particle mixed in Low Density Polyethylene on the deterioration by treeing, a comparative study for initiation and development of the tree has been carried out between the pure thin film specimen and the same geometrical specimen mixed with a constant weight percent by a defiend particle size of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ and SiO$_{2}$, having larger dielectric constants than that of the base material. According to the results, it has been observed that as increasing dielectric constant, the initiation of tree is expedited, however, the development of the tree reached at the surface of filler particles shows the suppressive trends. From these facts, a reasonable interpretation may be possible by considering the effect of intensified electrical field around the tip in the presence of filler particles, that the initiation and the development of tree are a mechanical break down process caused by Maxwell stress due to the concentration of electrical field at the tip. This suppressive effect is specifically suggestive for the reason that a discharge route must be constructed around the particle surface because of the intensified field strength near filler, which, in turn, reduces the geometrical curvature of the tip so that the local intensity of electrical field can be relaxed. Further more an experimental evidence for this assumption was able to observe in this investigation.
