The structural characterization of cubic boron nitride (c-BN) thin films was performed using a B4C target in a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering system. The deposition processing conditions, including the substrate bias voltage, substrate temperature, and base pressure were varied. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the crystal structures and chemical binding energy of the films. For the BN film deposited at room temperature, c-BN was formed in the substrate bias voltage range of -400 V to -600 V. Less c-BN fraction was observed as the deposition temperature increased, and more c-BN fraction was observed as the base pressure increased.
In order to make clear relationship between high temperature tensile properties and fine microstructure of rapidly solidified cast-type Ni-base superalloys without heat treatment required for consolidation process, tensile test was carried out by changing strain rate from $5{\times}10^{-5}s^{-1}$ to $2{\times}10^{-2}s^{-1}$ and test temperature from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1050^{\circ}C$ using IN738LC and Rene'80 melt-spinning ribbons by twin roll process which were superior to ribbons by single roll process from the viewpoint of structure homogeneity. The dependence of tensile strength on strain rate and test temperature was studied and strain rate sensitivity, m, were estimated from tensile test results. From this study, it was found that tensile strength was influenced by ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particle diameter, test temperature and strain rate, and m of ribbons exhibited above 0.3 over $950^{\circ}C$.
Directional solidification experiments were carried out at 0.5-150 $\mu\textrm{m}$/s in the Co-base superalloy ECY 768. As increasing solidification rate, the dendrite length increased and it reached the maximum at 150 $\mu\textrm{m}$/s, where the tip temperature is close to the liquidus. The liquidus and eutectic temperatures could be estimated by comparing the dendrite lengths and the temperature gradients at the solid/liquid interface and those were estimated as $1424.6^{\circ}C$ and $1343^{\circ}C$ respectively. Between the dendrites just below final freezing temperature, MC carbide and $M_{23}$$C_{6}$ carbide were found. It was confirmed that the script or blocky shape was Ta or W-rich MC carbide, and the lamellar shape was Cr-rich eutectic carbide. The solid/liquid interface morphology clearly showed that the Cr-rich eutectic carbide formed just after the script type MC carbide.
Intelligent machines respond to external environments on the basis of decisions that are made by sensing the changes in the environment and analyzing the obtained information. This study focuses on the construction of a knowledge base which enables decision making with that information. Approximately 70% of all errors that occur in machine tools are caused by thermal error. In order to proactive deal with these errors, a system which measures the temperature of each part and predicts and compensates the displacement of each axis has been developed. The system was built in an open type controller to enable machine tools to measure temperature changes and compensate the displacement. The construction of a machining knowledge base is important for the implementation of intelligent machine tools, and is expected to be applicable to the network based intelligent machine tools which look set to appear sooner or later.
Recent denaturation experiments of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) in the dark and under illumination at high temperatures revealed that irreversible thermal bleaching occurs above ~ 70°C and the preceding reversible structural changes in the dark above 60°C are closely related to irreversible photobleaching observed in the same temperature range (Yokoyama et al. (2002). J Biochem. 131,785). In this study, structural properties of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) at high temperatures were extensively probed by hydroxylamine reactivity with the Schiff base in the dark and hydrogen-deuterium (H-D) exchange in the peptide groups. In the Arrhenius plot from kinetics measurements of the hydroxylamine reaction, a good linear relationship between the reaction time constant and the inverse of the absolute temperature was observed below 60°C, while significant increase started above 60°C, suggesting that remarkable increase in water accessibility of the Schiff base in the temperature region. FT-IR spectroscopic studies on the H-D exchange suggested increase in the deuterium exchanges rate of the peptide hydrogen in the same temperature region.
One of the controversial research issues on nanofluids is the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of nanofluids, that is, whether it will increase or decrease according to the temperature rise. To evaluate precisely the thermal conductivity behavior of nanofluids, a systematic way of validation experiments for the measuring instrument has been highly recommended. In this paper, procedure of the validation test for transient hot-wire method using the temperature dependence of the base fluids was explained comprehensively and the comparison of the temperature dependence of water-$Al_2O_3$ nanofluids is made between the present work and that of Das et al.
This paper was investigated degradation of the fracture toughness caused by sensitizing heat-treatment of the cryogenic structural material JN1 base metal using unloading compliance method reported as useful a method in evaluating the elastic-plastic fracture toughness at cryogenic temperature. The specimens used in this paper were 20% side-grooved 0.5T-CT specimens which were machined in the JN1 base metal. Also, to investigate cryogenic fracture toughness of the fusion line region in the JN1 GTA weldments, it was also used 20% side-grooved 0.5T-CT specimens that was machined fusion line to located in the middle of the specimen. The cryogenic fracture toughness values of the JN1 base metal were significantly decreased with increasing the time and temperature of the heat treatment. The fracture toughness value obtained from the fusion line specimen was invalid, but it was lower value than that of the JN1 base metal. Especially, this value was approximately equal with that obtained from the JN1 650.deg. C-5h heat-treated material.
This work is concerning a methodology of Ni-base superalloy development for a very high temperature gas-cooled reactor(VHTR) using design of experiments(DOE) and thermodynamic calculations. Total 32 sets of the Ni-base superalloys with various chemical compositions were formulated based on a fractional factorial design of DOE, and the thermodynamic stability of topologically close-packed(TCP) phases of those alloys was calculated by using the THERMO-CALC software. From the statistical evaluation of the effect of the chemical composition on the formation of TCP phase up to a temperature of 950 oC, which should be suppressed for prolonged service life when it used as the structural components of VHTR, 16 sets were selected for further calculation of the mechanical properties. Considering the yield and ultimate tensile strengths of the selected alloys estimated by using the JMATPRO software, the optimized chemical composition of the alloys for VHTR application, especially intermediate heat exchanger, was proposed for a succeeding experimental study.
The effects of vitamin C and vitamin E with selenium on acid-base balance and some stress hormones were evaluated during heat stress in goats. Goats, 1.5 years of age, were divided into control, heat stress and antioxidant treatment groups 1, 2 and 3. Except for the control, all groups were exposed to a temperature of $40{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ with a relative humidity of 30% for 5 h/d for 21 days in a psychrometric chamber. Rectal temperature and respiratory rates were recorded daily post exposure. Blood samples were collected on every 3rd day for estimation of plasma vitamins C and E, total antioxidant activity and hormones, and separate blood samples were taken to estimate acid-base status. The rectal temperature and respiratory rates were increased (p<0.05) in the heat stress group only. Except for pH and $pO_2$, which were increased significantly (p<0.05) other parameters of acid-base balance such as $pCO_2$, $HCO_3^-$, $TCO_2$, BEb, BEcef, PCV and Hb were significantly decreased (p<0.05) in the heat stress group. An improvement in acid-base status was noted in the antioxidant supplemented groups. Prolactin and cortisol levels were significantly (p<0.05) higher and free T3 and T4 levels were significantly (p<0.05) lower in the heat stress group. Levels of prolactin and cortisol were decreased and free T3 and T4 were increased in antioxidant treatment groups. Different levels of antioxidant supplementation resulted in similar protection against heat stress.
There are no specific guidelines on how to control the heat input for the heat generating smart base layer. This study investigated the mode of actuating heat pad attached to the base layer by performing a human wear test in a cold environment. Subjects participating in the test wore T-shirts, jumper and pants on the base layer with heating pads. Skin temperature, total time of heating and the number of switching for the heating mode were observed as the subject controlled the heating mode voluntarily. The comfortable range of skin temperature on the abdomen was larger than on the lower back. The subject felt hot and turned off the switch when the mean skin temperature of the abdomen was $48.8^{\circ}C$ and the lower back was $40.1^{\circ}C$. The total heating time and the number of actuating switching were larger for women than men. The voluntary action of heating for men with high cold sensitivity was significantly different from men with low cold sensitivity. Therefore, it is necessary (depending on gender and cold sensitivity) to set the heating mode differently for the automatic heat control of a future smart base layer.
