High performance functional fibers are demanded increasingly in the modern industries, while the inorganic fibers such as carbon fibers, glass fibers, and metal fibers are representative among them in that they have high strength, consistent properties in a broad temperature change, etc.. This paper reports on the experimental trial to apply the microwave furnace on melting the natural basalt rock that spreads overall on the global surface and is supposed to be used as the raw material for the inorganic high performance fiber. Results showed that the new method to use the microwave as the heating source to melt the basalt rock was feasible. The crucible spinning could effectively applied for producing the basalt fibers up to 10 micrometer diameter, when the crushed basalt rocks were used. For drawing the molten basalt the drawing roller surface feature was a very important factor.

In order to investigate a strength anisotrophy of basalt in Cheju Island, rock samples of Pyosenri basalt, trachy-basalt and scoria were taken from Seoguipo-Si Seongsan-Eup area, and a series of uniaxial compressive strength test and Brazilian test were carried out. The strengths were decreased with increasing the moisture contents in rock sample by pore water. As the result of test considering the anisotropy of rock strength, the compressive strength in condition of failure occurred parallel to stratified layer is decreased about 12-26% more than that in condition of failure occurred inclined to stratified layer.

Environmental pollution problems are occurring in Jeju Island due to negative treatment of basalt waste. Measures for various approaches and utilization measures are needed to solve the problem of waste stones that occur during basalt processing. In this study, the Properties of permeable blocks with basalt were identified and the applicability and functionality as building materials were reviewed. This experiment is basic data for evaluating the functionality of the permeable block by manufacturing permeable blocks using basalt waste stones and analyzing flexural strength and compressive strength. The higher the basalt waste stone replacement rate, the lower the flexural strength and compressive strength, but it was judged that 20% of basalt waste stone replacement rate that satisfies the minimum flexural strength (4.0MPa) stipulated in KS F 4419 was appropriate. In addition, additional permeability coefficient and absorption rate experiments tended to increase as the basalt lung stone replacement rate increased. Therefore, it is judged that the permeable block using basalt waste stone is superior to the existing permeable block.

Frost shattering has traditionally been considered as one of the most effective process in rock weathering. Each slab specimens of five or six rhyolite, basalt and tuff was prepared and put in freeze-thaw cycles and repeated 300 times in the temperature of $-25^{\circ}C$ to $+30^{\circ}C$ and their weathering patterns and products were analyzed by surface observation, particle size, XRD and thin section. As the result, some changes were observed in weathering patterns and weathering products. Rock shattering was more active in waterlogging rather than atmospheric conditions, but there are many differences depending on the type of rock. Rhyolite is hardly weathered by 300 times freeze-thaw cycles and generates the least amount of weathering products. Weathering of Basalt is limited to the surface layer where water can be absorbed, and produces a few amount of platy-shape debris. Tuff are separated by blocky structure which the particles are aggregated along their edges rather than enlarged existing cracks/joins or generated new joints.

According to the Korean Design Code for port and harbor facilaties, bearing capacity of rubble mound under eccentric and inclined load is calculated by the simplified Bishop method, and strength parameters are recommended to be c=0.2kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and ø=35$^{\circ}$for standard rubble if the compressive strength of parent rock is greater than 300kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, quoting from research results by Jun-ichi Mizukami(1991), But this facts have never been certified in Korea because there was not large-scale triaxial test apparatus until 2000 in Korea. Firstly in Korea, the large-scale triaxial test (sample diameter, 30cm and height, 60cm) on the rubble originated from porous basalt rock in North-Cheju was accomplished. Then strength parameters for basalt rubble produced in North-Cheju are recommended to be c=0.3kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and ø=36$^{\circ}$if the compressive strength of parent rock is greater than 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

Environmental pollution problems are occurring due to the negative treatment of basalt waste in Jeju Island. This study identifies the characteristics of permeable block with basalt with physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms and examines their applicability and functionality as building materials. This experiment is basic data for evaluating the functionality of the permeable block by analyzing flexural strength, compressive strength, permeability coefficient, carbon dioxide, and fine dust adsorption rate by producing a permeable block using a basalt waste rock. As the basalt waste stone replacement rate increased, the flexural strength and compressive strength tended to decrease, and as the replacement rate increased, the water permeability coefficient, absorption rate, carbon dioxide, and fine dust adsorption rate tended to increase. Therefore, it is judged that the permeable block using the basalt waste rock is superior to the existing permeable block.
In order to investigate the influence factors to compressive and tensile strength of basalt in Cheju Island, rock samples of Pyosenri basalt, trachy-basalt and scoria were taken from Seoguipo-Si Seongsan-Eup area, and a series of uniaxial compressive strength test and Brazilian test were carried out. Especially, these tests were performed in consideration of the loading speed, the moisture content in rock sample, and the anisotropy of rock strength. The uniaxial compressive strength was increased gradually as the loading speed rose. The increasing quantity of uniaxial compressive strength had a difference in each rock types. Also, the strength was decreased with increasing the moisture contents in rock sample by pore water. As the result of test considering the anisotropy of rock strength, the compressive strength in condition of failure occurred parallel to stratified layer is decreased about 12-26% more than that in condition of failure occurred inclined to stratified layer.
The present study focuses on the performance of basalt fiber reinforced concrete (BFRC) lining in tunnel situated in sandstone rock when subjected to internal blast loading. The blast analysis of the lined tunnel is carried out using the three-dimensional (3-D) nonlinear finite element (FE) method. The stress-strain response of the sandstone rock is simulated using a crushable plasticity model which can simulate the brittle behavior of rock and that of BFRC lining is analyzed using a damaged plasticity model for concrete capturing damage response. The strain rate dependent material properties of BFRC are collected from the literature and that of rock are taken from the authors' previous work using split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The constitutive model performance is validated through the FE simulation of SHPB test and the comparison of simulation results with the experimental data. Further, blast loading in the tunnel is simulated for 10 kg and 50 kg Trinitrotoluene (TNT) charge weights using the equivalent pressure-time curves obtained through hydrocode simulations. The analysis results are studied for the stress and displacement response of rock and tunnel lining. Blast performance of BFRC lining is compared with that of plain concrete (PC) and steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) lining materials. It is observed that the BFRC lining exhibits almost 65% lesser displacement as compared to PC and 30% lesser displacement as compared to SFRC tunnel linings.

The study that unconfined compression strength of intact rock which is the most important factor to determine the bearing capacity effects discontinuities in rock mass has been carried out actively so far. However, the study which is related to lithological characters such as vesicle which is one of the primary characteristics of Basalt has barely been conducted. On this study, We have analyzed the correlation-ship between vesicle and unconfined compression strength and the effect on the bearing capacity, based on the reviewing on the changes of unconfined compression strength as the amount of vesicle of Basalt. It is impossible to analyze the amount of vesicle of Basalt as measuring unit. So it was analyzed by the ratio of the core sample's surface area and another area that vesicle takes up. Also, unconfined compression strength was calculated by point load test and unconfined compression strength test. The analysis shows that vesicle area ratio and unconfined compression strength have the exponential relationship and vesicle area ration is the factor to determine the bearing capacity of Basalt. It is considered that the reliability of calculating of the bearing capacity of Basalt will be improved as we study the correlation-ship between the vesicle area ratio and rock mass grade hereafter.

To overcome the limitation of conventional rock excavation methods, the excavation with abrasive waterjet has been actively developed. The abrasive waterjet excavation method has the effect of reducing blasting vibration and enhancing the excavation efficiency by forming a continuous free surface on the rock. However, the waterjet cutting performance varies with rock fracturing characteristics. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the cutting performance for various rocks in order to effectively utilize the waterjet excavation. In this study, cutting experiments with the high pressure waterjet system were performed for basalt and granite specimens. Water pressure, standoff distance, and traverse speed were determined as effective parameters for the abrasive waterjet cutting. The cutting depth and width of basalt specimens were analyzed to compare with granite results. The averaged cutting depth of basalt was shown in 41% deeper than granite; in addition, the averaged cutting width of basalt was formed by 18.5% narrower than granite. The results of this study are expected to be useful basic data for applying rock excavation site with low strength and high porosity such as basalt.
