  • Four castrated Corriedale sheep were used in an experiment to observe the changes in insulin, growth hormone and cortisol in blood plasma following a prolonged infusion of a high rate of somatostatin (SRIF). The animals wee infused with either saline, 25 or $50{\mu}g/kg/h$ of SRIF for 3 hours. Blood samples wee taken every 20 minutes until 1 hour following the end of the SRIF infusion. Both SRIF infusion levels suppressed the release of insulin into plasma to approximately 3.5 mU/l. The SRIF infusions reduced the concentration of growth hormone to barely detectable levels. Following the withdrawal of SRIF there was a massive release of growth hormone. The plasma concentration of growth hormone reached 60 ng/ml within 20 minutes, the length of the growth hormone discharge was in excess of 1 hour. The extent of the discharge of growth hormone following the SRIF infusions was greater than that suppressed by the infusion. The SRIF apparently caused an increase in the plasma concentration of cortisol at the end of the infusion and following is withdrawal. This is possibly associated with some change in the metabolic rate associated with the suppression of insulin or glucagons release. The present experiment demonstrates that a high rate of SRIF infusion can not completely inhibit the release of insulin into the plasma.

  • We investigated the potential use of various carbon sources (fructose, glucose, mannose, lactose, and glycerol) for culturing Phaeodactylum tricornutum UTEX-640 in mixotrophic and heterotrophic batch cultures. Concentrations of carbon substrates tested ranged from 0.005 M to 0.2 M. P. tricornutum did not grow heterotrophically on any of the C-sources used, but successive additions of organic carbon in mixotrophic growth mode substantially increased the biomass concentration and productivity relative to photoautotrophic controls. The maximum biomass productivities in mixotrophic cultures for glycerol, fructose, and glucose were 21.30 mg/l h, 15.80 mg/l h, and 10.20 mg/l h, respectively. These values were respectively 10-, 8-, and 5-fold higher than those obtained in the corresponding photoautotrophic control cultures. Mannose and lactose did not significantly affect microalgal growth. The biomass lipids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and pigments contents were considerably enhanced with glycerol and fructose in relation to photoautotrophic controls. The EPA content was barely affected by the sugars, but were more than 2-fold higher in glycerol-fed cultures than in photoautotrophic controls.

  • The order to see how the deep cleansing change sebum and moisture condition by skin type, 20 persons with dry skin and oily skin were divided into two groups of scrub group and enzyme group and given the deep cleansing care, totaling 8 time. After 8 times of the deep cleansing care, the scrub group showed a valid change with oily skin while the enzyme group showed a valid change with dry skin. However, both groups did not have change a moisture with any skin types. The outcome from the questionnaire that had been done to find subjective feeling indicated that oil change resulted in a valid feeling whereas change of moisture and sensitivity were barely felt.

  • There exists required safety integrity level (SIL) to assure safety in accordance with international standards for every electrical / electronics / control equipment or systems with safety related functions. The SIL is allocated from lowest level (level 0) to highest level (level 4). In order to guarantee certain safety level that is internationally acceptable, application of methodology for SIL allocation and demonstration based on related international standards is required. However, the theoretical and practical study for safety integrity level is barely under way in the domestic railway industry. This research studied not only the global process of SIL allocation to guarantee safety in accordance with international standards for safety related equipment and system, but the quantitative methodology based on international standard and the semi-quantitative methodology as alternative way for SIL allocation. Specifically, the systematic SIL allocation for platform screen door system of railway is studied applying the semi-quantitative methodology in order to save much time and effort compared to quantitative method.

  • We find that there is the height premium in the Korean labor market. The wage increases by 1.5% with a centimeter increase of height among male workers of ages 30-49. This estimate is barely affected by family backgrounds such as a worker's father's education or occupation. It is rejected that a worker's height is a proxy variable for his health, which increases his wage. The height premium is unrelated with obesity. It is not also supported that a worker's height affects his wage through his occupational choice. We partly confirm that a worker's height affects his wage through his educational choice. The estimated height premium of 30's in Korea is comparable to that of age 33 in Great Britain.

  • A platform diving with categorizing 624C motion was video taped and 3D kinematic variables were analyzed. This motion is consist of 3 parts from the headstand position to the act of turning after take-off. The results indicated that it took a very short time from the moment of take-off to the act of 1/2 turning because the turning motion has already started from preparing motion even before the fingertips have parted from the ground. Also, there was barely any jumping height due to the use of upper limbs segment and there was little difference in the moving distance compared to the standing events judging from horizontal movement of 1.1m. The horizontal velocity of the center of human body was increased before take-off while the vertical velocity was decreased right after take-off and the velocity of lower limbs segment was faster than the upper limbs segment showing contrary results to the standing events. In the aspects of angular velocity, the upper limbs segment starts the turning motion when take-off by rapidly extending its angular velocity while lower limbs segment make large angular velocity even before take-off.

  • For the extraction and measurement of zearalenone in the corn, bean, wheat and barley contaminated with Fusarium graminearum, the zearalenone-oxime, zearalenone-oxime BSA and zearalenone monoclonal antibodies were studied to develop and apply the direct competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The extraction range of zearalenone with the monoclonal antibodies produced in this experiment was 10ng to 500ng/g feed and the 50% inhibition value was 50ng/ml. The mean recoveries of zearalenone artificially spiked in the ground corn were 89%. The specificity of F-2 monoclonal antibody for the analogues was favorable for the direct competitive ELISA. The result of the experiment showed the zearalenone in the corn, bean, wheat and barely naturally contaminated with the mold would be suitable for extraction and measurement with the monoclonal antibodies.

  • The possibility of applying birchwood xylan in papermaking process to improve dry strength of paper was investigated. Unmodified xylan barely adsorbed onto pulp fibers while cationically modified xylan adsorbed substantially. Adsorption of cationically modified xylan by quaternarization with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropy trimethylammonium chloride improved dry strength of paper. Chemical structure and degree of substitution of the cationically modified xylan was determined by 400 MHz 13CNMR spectroscopy and elemental analyzer. The amount of adsorbed xylan on cellulose fibers was greater when the cationicity was moderate, and it was interpreted that the conformation of this cationic xylan adsorbed on fiber surface was more favorable for greater adsorption due to its greater loop formation tendency while highly cationic xylan tends to adsorbed in stretched conformation. The physical properties of handsheets increased as the amount of adsorbed cationic xylan increased. On the other hands, the optical properties decreased with xylan adsorption.

  • Quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) has long been considered to improve our understanding of soil productivity, soil carbon dynamics, and soil quality. And also SOC could contribute as a major soil management factor for prescribing fertilizers and controlling of soil erosion and runoff. Reducing tillage intensity has been recommended to sequester SOC into soil. On the other hand, determination of traditional SOC could barely identify the tillage practices effect. Physical soil fractionation has been reported to improve interpretation of soil tillage practices impact on SOC dynamics. However, most of these researches were focused onupland soils and few researches were conducted on paddy soils. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate paddy soil tillage impact on SOC by physical soil fractionation. Soils were sampled in conventional-tillage (CT), partial-tillage (PT), no-tillage (NT), and shallow-tillage (ST)plots at the National Institute of Crop Science research farm. Samples were obtained at the three sampling depth with 7.5-cm increment from the surface and were sieved with 0.25- and 0.053-mm screen. Soil organic carbon was determined by wet combustion method. Significant difference of SOC contentwas found among sampling soil depth and soil particle size. SOC content tended to increase at the ST plot with increasing size of soil particle fraction. We conclude that quantifying soil organic carbon by physical soil particle fractionation could improve understanding of SOC dynamics by soil tillage practices.

  • A new rhodamine B-coumarin conjugate (1) capable of recognizing both $Cu^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ using two different detection modes have been designed and synthesized. The metal ion induced optical changes of 1 were investigated in $CH_3CN-H_2O$ (1:1, v/v, HEPES 50 mM, pH = 7.0) solution. Sensor 1 exhibits selective colorimetric recognition of $Cu^{2+}$ and fluorescent recognition of $Fe^{3+}$ with UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. Moreover, both of the $Cu^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ recognition processes are observed to be barely interfered by other coexisting metal ions.
