  • Recently, the natural and man-made slope collapses occur frequently because of sudden heavy rains. So, a variety of slope reinforcement methods have been developed and applied to failure slopes. Soil nailing method usage has been increased because of its workability and economic aspects. This method has been applied in combination with other slope stability methods. Soil nailing method is a kind of combinational structure of steel bar and cement grouting. This method uses skin friction between adjacent ground and cement grouting to stabilize the slope. In this study, End-expanded soil nailing method was developed. This method consists of steel bar and anchor body attached at the tip of the nail. During construction, the anchor body at steel bar tip is settled to the ground through the expanding action. In this study, field pull-out tests were performed for un-grouting soil nailing and grouting soil nailing. From the test results, a wedge force of End-expanded soil nailing method was analyzed. And the behavior characteristics of End-expanded soil nailing were studied.

  • The use of post installed anchors with bond type has lately been increasing when it is necessary to repair, reinforce, or remodel structures. This method provides flexibility and simplicity for construction of structural members that require adhering or fixing. Meanwhile, strength evaluation of anchors with expansion type among post-installed anchors systems has nearly reached setting up stage like design code through continual experimental studies for the last ten years, but analyses or experimental studies on anchor system with bond type are not yet sufficient. Accordingly, the designers and builders of korea depend on foreign design codes since there are no exact domestic design code they could credit. In this study, the objectives are investigating the effects on pull-out strength of resin anchors embedded into plain concrete by pull-out experiment of resin anchors with variables such as anchor diameter, anchor interval, embedment depth and edge distance.

  • In 2006, Jeju Island in South Korea experienced a crisis, no electricity for three hours anywhere in the entire island. This incident was caused by a domino effect that occurred after one of the submarine power cables connecting the island to Haenam, a coastal city on the mainland, was damaged by an external load, probably from a ship anchor or a steel pile being used in marine farming. This study presents a collision analysis of a new submarine power cable protector called arch type reinforced concrete. For the analysis, a dynamic finite element program, ANSYS AUTODYN, was used to examine the displacement and stress of the submarine power cable protector using different material models (RHT concrete model, Mohr.Coulomb concrete model). In addition, two reinforcing bar spacings, 75 mm and 150 mm, were considered. From the analyses, the effects of the parameters (concrete model and spacing) on the results (displacement and stress) were analyzed, and the relations between the damage and parameters were found.

  • Flexural tests on 3.0m reinfored concrete beams with epoxy and anchor bolt bonded CFRF-Grid reported in these tests. The selected experimental variables are concrete compressive strength, strengthening length and strengthening method. The effects of these variables in overall behavior are discussed. The results generally shown that the main flexural mode of strengthened beams is separation failure. The strengthening of the chipping by the tensile bar is really necessary in order to prevent CFRP-Grid from rip-off failure.

  • In this study, an experimental investigation of the strength of R/C columns with 300mm square sections confined by head anchorage bar is presented. This initial phase of research considers only axial loading and consists of a total of 7 column tests. The main variables are distance and anchorage type of transverse reinforcement such as standard hooks and headed bar. The purpose of this study is to investigate the confinement effect and strength increment by head and to propose the confinement model for column using the head at end of lateral tie. Also, the test results for ultimate strength and strength gain factor of columns in this study and previous study is compared with the existing analytical models. Based on the test results, the Saatcioglu's model estimates confinement effects was closed to experimental value and the developed analytical approach considered the head was capable of predicting the strength gain factor results with a resonable accuracy.

  • This paper presents the pull-out failure mode on Headed Bars and prediction of tensile capacity, as governed by concrete cone failure. 17 different plate types, three different concrete strengths and three different welding types of specimens were simulated. Test variables are the reinforcing bar diameters connected to headed plate (e.g., 16mm, 19mm and 22mm), the head plate shapes (e.g., circular, square, rectangular), the dimensions of head plates (e.g., area and thickness), the types of welding scheme for connection of reinforcing bars and head plates (e.g., general welding and friction welding). Headed Bars were manufactured in different areas, which shape and thickness are based on ASTM 970-98. Calculation of Embedment length in concrete is based on CSA 23.3-94, and static tensile load was applied. Pullout capacities tested were compared to the values determined using current design methods such as ACI-349 and CCD method. If compare experiment results and existings, Headed bar expressed high strength and bigger breakdown radious than standard by wide plate area and anomaly reinforcing rod unlike anchor.

  • Pull-out strength of tie-bin used in pavement construction is not an issue because those are embedded in newly placed concrete slabs. However, sufficient pull-out strength should be secured in widening constructions because, in case, the tie-bars are inserted into drilled holes of the existing slabs with liquid filler. Insufficient pull-out strength will result in lowered load transfer efficiency between adjacent slabs in addition to poor serviceability and durability due to joint widening. The pull-out strength of the tie-bars installed by current method is evaluated and improved methods are proposed. The field pull-out strength obtained by the current method was only 42.7% of required strength. Its first counterproposal is using to insert the liquid filler into drilled holes and stoppers to prevent it from flowing out of the holes. However, this method was not judged to secure desired level of quality control. The second counterproposal which substitutes the existing type of the tie-bars by SL anchor bolts was judged to secure sufficient pull out-strength in addition to the quality control and constructibility.

  • Since the double-deck tunnel is deeply constructed in the city, it is necessary to secure the installation space of air supply and exhaust, escape passage stairs, elevator, distribution facilities and connection tunnels in the vertical shaft for the double-deck tunnel. Also, in order to minimize the effect of construction on adjacent area, it is necessary to construct the concrete structures at high speed in vertical shaft after tunnel excavation. Therefore, the slabs and the stairs in vertical shaft are needed to be constructed using precast concrete, and the rapid construction techniques of bracket for supporting the inner precast structure are needed. The bracket installation methods include cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete and steel. In this study, the improvement of the steel brackets with good economical efficiency and good workability was carried out in consideration of the improvement of the construction speed. We have developed a new bracket that is optimized through bracket shape improvement, anchor bolt position adjustment and quantity optimization. As a result of the structural performance test, it was confirmed that the required load supporting capacity was secured. As a result of structural performance test for bar type anchor bolt and bent anchor anchor bolt, it was confirmed that the required load carrying capacity was secured and that the load bearing capacity of bent anchor bolt was large.

  • Many studies have dealt with strengthening by epoxy-bonded CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) composites. However, the effects of various influencing factors have not been clarified on the behavior of strengthened RC beams. This study was performed to verify the effects of strengthening due to various bond details of externally attached CFRP Composites. In this study, major test parameters include the bond type and the anchor type. The deflections, failure load, strain of reinforcing bar, concrete and CFRP are measured at each loading step. The failure mode and debonding loads(ultimate loads) are analysed from these measured data. According to the test results, all specimens are failed by intermediate flexural crack induced interfacial debonding.
