  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the ballistic performance of fiber reinforced plastic(FRP)-steel plates completely penetrated by hemispherical-nosed projectiles at sub-ordnance velocities greater than their ballistic limits. The FRP-steel plate consists of a front FRP laminate and a steel backing plate. Failure mechanisms and impact energy absorptions of FRP-steel plates were analyzed and compared with FRP laminates and single steel plates. The effects of relative thickness, manufacturing method and fabric type of front composite armors as well as the joining style between front composite armors and steel backing plates on the total perforation resistance of FRP-steel plates were explored. It is found that in the case of FRP-steel plates completely penetrated by hemispherical-nosed projectiles at low velocities, the failure modes of front composite armors are slightly changed while for steel backing plates, the dominate failure modes are greatly changed due to the influence of front composite armors. The relative thickness and fabric type of front composite armors as well as the joining style of FRP-steel plates have large effects whereas the manufacturing method of front composite armors has slight effect on the total perforation resistance of FRP-steel plates.

  • The target classification for ballistic target(BT) is one of the most critical issues of ballistic defence mode(BDM) in multi-function radar(MFR). Radar responds to the target according to the result of classifying BT and air breathing target(ABT) on BDM. Since the efficiency and accuracy of the classification is closely related to the capacity of the response to the ballistic missile offense, effective and accurate classification scheme is necessary. Generally, JEM(Jet Engine Modulation), HRR(High Range Resolution) and ISAR(Inverse Synthetic Array Radar) image are used for a target classification, which require specific radar waveform, data base and algorithms. In this paper, the classification method that is applicable to a MFR system in a real environment without specific waveform is proposed. The proposed classifier adopts kinematic data as a feature vector to save radar resources at the radar time and hardware point of view and is implemented by fuzzy logic of which simple implementation makes it possible to apply to the real environment. The performance of the proposed method is verified through measured data of the aircraft and simulated data of the ballistic missile.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the ballistic properties of Zr-based amorphous alloy surface composites fabricated by high-energy electron-beam irradiation. The mixture of Zr-based amorphous powders and $LiF+MgF_2$ flux powders was deposited on a pure Ti substrate, and then an electron beam irradiated this powder mixture to fabricate a one-layer surface composite. A four-layer surface composite, in which the composite layer thickness was larger than 3 mm, was also fabricated by irradiating the deposited powder mixture by an electron beam three times on the one-layer surface composite. The microstructural analysis results indicated that a small amount of fine crystalline particles were homogeneously distributed in the amorphous matrix of the surface composite layer. According to the ballistic impact test results, the surface composite layers effectively blocked a fast traveling projectile, while many cracks were formed at the composite layers, and thus the surface composite plates were not perforated. The surface composite layer containing ductile ${\beta}$ dendritic phases showed a better ballistic performance than the one without dendrites because dendritic phases hindered the propagation of shear bands or cracks.

  • It is very difficult to detect ballistic missiles because of small cross-sections of the radar and the high maneuverability of the missiles. In addition, it is very difficult to recognize and intercept warheads because of the existence of debris and decoy with similar motion parameters in each flight phase. Therefore, feature vectors based on the maneuver, the micro-motion according to flight phase are needed, and the two types of features must be fused for the efficient recognition of ballistic warhead regardless of the flight phase. In this paper, we introduce feature vectors appropriate for each flight phase and an effective method to fuse them at the feature vector-level and classifier-level. According to the classification simulations using the radar signals predicted by the CAD models, the closer the warhead was to the final destination, the more improved was the classification performance. This was achieved by the classifier-level fusion, regardless of the flight phase in a noisy environment.

  • Silicene, a 2D allotrope of silicon, is predicted to be a potential material for future transistor that might be compatible with present silicon fabrication technology. Similar to graphene, silicene exhibits the honeycomb lattice structure. Consequently, silicene is a semimetallic material, preventing its application as a field-effect transistor. Therefore, this work proposes the uniform doping bandgap engineering technique to obtain the n-type silicene nanosheet. By applying nearest neighbour tight-binding approach and parabolic band assumption, the analytical modelling equations for band structure, density of states, electrons and holes concentrations, intrinsic electrons velocity, and ideal ballistic current transport characteristics are computed. All simulations are done by using MATLAB. The results show that a bandgap of 0.66 eV has been induced in uniformly doped silicene with phosphorus (PSi3NW) in the zigzag direction. Moreover, the relationships between intrinsic velocity to different temperatures and carrier concentration are further studied in this paper. The results show that the ballistic carrier velocity of PSi3NW is independent on temperature within the degenerate regime. In addition, an ideal room temperature subthreshold swing of 60 mV/dec is extracted from ballistic current-voltage transfer characteristics. In conclusion, the PSi3NW is a potential nanomaterial for future electronics applications, particularly in the digital switching applications.

  • In weapon assignment studies to defend against threats such as ballistic missiles and long range artillery, threat assessment was partially lacking in analysis of various threat attributes, and considering the threat characteristics of warheads, which are difficult to judge in the early flight stages, it is very important to apply more reliable optimal solutions than approximate solution using LP model, Meta heuristics Genetic Algorithm, Tabu search and Particle swarm optimization etc. Our studies suggest Generic Rule based threat evaluation and weapon assignment algorithm in the basis of various attributes of threats. First job of studies analyzes information on Various attributes such as the type of target, Flight trajectory and flight time, range and intercept altitude of the intercept system, etc. Second job of studies propose Rule based threat evaluation and weapon assignment algorithm were applied to obtain a more reliable solution by reflection the importance of the interception system. It analyzes ballistic missiles and long-range artillery was assigned to multiple intercept system by real time threat assessment reflecting various threat information. The results of this study are provided reliable solution for Weapon Assignment problem as well as considered to be applicable to establishing a missile and long range artillery defense system.

  • In this study, study on the internal ballistic analysis method for single-chamber dual-thrust rocket motors meeting a dual-thrust profile requirement by tailoring the grain burning area is presented. The analysis method, which can acquire variables required for the performance prediction, considering gradual change of burning rate correction factor and specific impulse in the transition phase, is proposed. Improvements compared to the analysis method in the previous study, which do not consider change in the transition phase, are verified through comparison between the newly proposed method and the method in the previous study. Internal ballistic variables are obtained for four different ground firing test conditions using the proposed method, and the performance prediction for each condition is conducted using these variables. These prediction results and the ground test data are in good agreement, so it is confirmed that the performance prediction of dual-thrust motors with same design geometries based on the proposed analysis method is available.

  • Total thickness, areal density and mass moment of inertia of materials are important material factors for structural characteristics. In this work, a material-structural optimization was performed up to the maximum ballistic limit of multi-layered composite structures under high impact velocity followed by the investigation of the influence of these factors on an impact absorption performance. A unified model combined with Florence's and Awerbuch-Bonder's models was used in optimizing the multi-layered composite structure consisting of CMC, rubber, aluminum and Al-foam. Total thickness, areal density and mass moment of inertia were used for the optimization constraint. As shown in the results, the ballistic limit determined from a newly developed unified model was closely similar to the finite clement analysis. Additionally, the ballistic limit and impact absorption energy obtained by the optimized structure were improved approximately 16.8% and 26.7%, respectively comparing with a not optimized multi-layered structure.

  • Modern bulletproof armor must be light and have excellent penetration resistance to ensure the mobility and safety of soldiers and military vehicles. The ballistic performance of heterogeneous structures of laminated flat plates as bulletproof armor depends on the arrangement of constituent materials for the same weight. In this study, we analyze bulletproof performance according to the stacking sequence of laminated bulletproof armor composed of Kevlar, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, and ethylene-vinyl-acetate foam. A ballistic analysis was performed by colliding a 7.62 × 51 mm NATO cartridge's M80 bullet at a speed of 856 m/s with six lamination arrangements with constituent materials thicknesses of 5 mm and 6.5 mm. To evaluate the bulletproof performance, the residual speed and residual energy of the projectile that penetrated the heterogeneous laminated flat plates were measured. Simulation results confirmed that the laminated structure with a stacking sequence of Kevlar, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, and ethylene-vinyl-acetate foam had the best bulletproof performance for the same weight.

  • For evaluating a large caliber ammunition tests, indoor ballistic test range is required to reduce the noise and fragments occurring during the test. To ensure the reliability of the indoor ballistics test range design, we carried out the analysis of the indoor test range using the AUTODYNE hydrodynamic code before its construction. The 120 mm tank ammunition is adopted as a reference model and we analysed the characteristics of the pressure distribution at fire area, the structure design at impact area, the over-pressure applied to the tunnel, and the sabot stopper design. The results of the analysis were applied to the design of the indoor ballistic test range.
