KTX trains show a high interior noise level in tunnel with concreted track at 300 km/h. Generally, the concreted track has higher sound emissions compared with ballasted track due to the reduced absorption and the major sources of interior noise for KTX are known as the aerodynamic noise and rolling noise. Therefore, It is necessary to find out noise source and noise components to affect interior noise in tunnel with concreted track. In this study, we measure the noise and vibration inside KTX in tunnel in order to find the cause of the interior noise of KTX. The analysis results show that the interior noise of KTX in tunnel with concreted track is increased sharply by a low frequency below 80 Hz. We know that the low frequency noise inside KTX in tunnel with concreted track is generated at the natural frequency of carbody by aerodynamic noise outside gangway and rolling noise. In order to reduce the noise level at 80 Hz, modification of mud-flap length between carbodys is suggested and the effect of noise reduction is examined in tunnel with concreted track.
There has been recently an on-going effort in railway community to improve the dynamic performance of on-site railroad track with limited track possession time. In this paper, train running test lateral resistant force test and static/dynamic analyses are conducted before and after sprinkle of the ballast stabilizer in order to investigate the dynamic behaviors and parameters of the railroad track. Based upon the above results, effects of the stabilizer is verified, and a table for the track modulus representing on-site track condition and the methods to reduce the vibration and the transmitting forces of the ballasted track components to the infrastructures are suggested. It is thought that the suggestions made in this paper could be used as the preliminary data for the condition assessment and the maintenance of the track in the future.
In recent time, the cause analysis and the reduction of the track irregularity have become the most important issue in the ballasted track on the high-speed railway bridge. This is because that the frequency of the maintenance work at the bridge expansion joint zone is on the rise. The track irregularity on the railway bridge starts at the end of the bridge-deck and spreads along the bridge. Due to the dynamic vibration and the thermal expansion of the bridge, the compaction of the ballast gravel on the bridge expansion joint zone become loose and then the progress of the track irregularity result from the train-induced dynamic impact is accelerating further. Among the several options for reducing the track irregularity on the bridge expansion joint zone, the application and efficiency of the zero longitudinal restraint(ZLR) and tied sleeper are investigated in this paper. Field test construction has been conducted, then the progress of the track irregularity and the frequency of the maintenance work are analyzed before and after the filed test construction. Of the two methods, it is shown that the installation of the ZLR seems to be better than the tied sleeper.

A quick-hardened concrete track was developed to improve the aged ballasted track to a concrete track, and applied to earthworks and tunnels of main and urban railways. Rebars for reinforcement are not generally applied to prestressed concrete sleepers. On the other hand, many cracked sleepers have been observed in railroad sites. A wide sleeper, which is one of the main components of quick-hardened concrete track, should be structurally safe and crack-resistant in a ballasted and concrete track to avoid this problem. In particular, a wide sleeper manufactured by a post-tension method must have reinforcing bars applied to the rail-seat section. In this paper, static tests, dynamic tests, and fatigue tests were carried out to compare the flexural strength and crack resistance performance of a wide sleeper with and without reinforcing bars for a quick-hardened concrete track. As a result of the test, if some reinforcing bars are applied appropriately to the rail-seat section of a wide sleeper, it will be possible to prevent the occurrence of cracks, delay the expansion of the crack width, and the flexural fracture.
A number of attempts has been made to reinforce ballasted track substructure to meet the requirement of high-speed operation and effective rehabilitation of existing railroads. For the purpose of this, the use of geogrid has been applied, and the benefit of its use has been recognized via previous studies. In this study, an experimental pullout test was carried out to investigate the influence of normal stress on pullout strength of geogrid using different types of soil and geogrid. The results revealed that the pullout resistance generally tends to increase proportional to normal stress while the pullout coefficient interaction decreases, which is a function of material interface properties, such as the friction angle of soil, and interlocking condition between soil and geogrid. In addition, a methodology based on work-energy concept was proposed to evaluate effectiveness of geogrid and limitedly verified using test results.
Post-construction subgrade settlement especially differential settlement, has become a key issue in construction and operation of non-ballasted track on high-speed railway soil subgrade, which may also affect the dynamic performance of passing trains. To estimate the effect of differential subgrade settlement on the mechanical behaviors of the vehicle-slab track system, a detailed model considering nonlinear subgrade support and initial track state due to track self-weight is developed. Accordingly, analysis aiming at a typical high-speed vehicle coupled with a deteriorated slab track owing to differential subgrade settlement is carried out, in terms of two aspects: (i) determination of an initial mapping relationship between subgrade settlement and track deflections as well as contact state between track and subgrade based on a semi-analytical method; (ii) simulation of dynamic performance of the coupled system by employing a time integration approach. The investigation indicates that subgrade settlement results in additional track irregularity, and locally, the contact between the concrete track and the soil subgrade is prone to failure. Moreover, wheel-rail interaction is significantly exacerbated by the track degradation and abnormal responses occur as a result of the unsupported areas. Distributions of interlaminar contact forces in track system vary dramatically due to the combined effect of track deterioration and dynamic load. These may not only intensify the dynamic responses of the coupled system, but also have impacts on the long-term behavior of the track components.
In this paper, the correlation between the vibration characteristics of the track components and the parameters affecting the vibration is analysed. To do it, the accelerations of each track component such as rails, sleepers and ballast are measured in Kyong-Bu high-speed line. The RMS values of the measured data are calculated and the pad stiffness, the longitudinal irregularity, running velocity and the corrugation, are considered as the parameters in the viewpoint of track. By using the linear regression, the correlation coefficient is calculated to analyse the relationship. Also, the 1/3 Octave analysis is calculated to analyse the dominant frequency band of tile vibrations of the track components.

Based on Korean railway design standards, the thicknesses of the reinforced roadbeds of conventional and high speed railways are different, and so too, for the size distribution of the ballast particles. Accordingly, considerable cost would be required to increase operating speeds of conventional lines, in particular related to changing from a ballasted track system to a ballastless one. In this study, applicability of a roadbed which supports conventional ballasted track, for use as a ballastless track for a high speed rail line was examined. A reinforced roadbed for a conventional railway is 20cm thick, and the type of material used for a conventional reinforced roadbed is M-40 (crushed gravel for road embankments). A dynamics test was conducted to evaluate the occurrence of the permanent settlement of the track substructure. These results suggest that, without changes to the track substructure, an operational speed of 400km/h is feasible with a ballastless track. This result; however, is from laboratory experiments. Further studies, such as numerical analyses or field validation, are required.

In the present study, in order to elucidate the vibration characteristics of track and train body according to the type of track in tunnel, the vibration accelerations of the track and the KTX train body have been measured in tunnels of Kyong-Bu high-speed railway(HSR) lines, and the frequency analysis of the measured data has been performed. From this, the vibration characteristics of the track components such as rail, sleeper, ballast and slab, the tunnel lining and the vehicle body according to the type of track are investigated and their relation is analyzed. The test results show that the vibration of rail and vehicle body rapidly increases at 80Hz in tunnel, and that is much higher in the tunnel on which the concrete slab track is placed. According to the results of the present study, rail supporting stiffness can variate the vibration characteristics of the total system including the vehicle, and therefore the correlation between the vibration of vehicle should be taken into account to determine the supporting stiffness of the slab track.

Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutments and piers bring about severe problems in track geometry and require maintenance work. In case of concrete slab track, more severe deformation and additional forces on rail and rail supports can be induced by bridge deck deformation, which affect the serviceability of track structure since concrete slab track is much stiffer than ballasted track and the behavior of track structure is integrated with that of bridge deck. In this study, the design variables affecting the serviceability of track structure are selected and the influence level is estimated by a parametric study. As a result, it is found that continuous span is advantageous than simply supported span and the stiffness of bridge bearing and rail fastener as well as the distance between last rail support and bridge bearing are most important parameters.
