Disturbance Observer and Error Model-based Control of Ball Screw Drives

  • Ball screw drives are widely used in industry, and many studies have been devoted on precise, fast and robust control of ball screw drives. In this study, a novel position control algorithm for ball screw drives is proposed, which consist of a PD controller, a friction feedforward and a disturbance observer. The dynamics and the position error of such controller are analyzed to establish an error model, which can be used to predict the resulting position error of the given desired trajectory. Using the proposed error model, the desired trajectory can be modified so that the predicted position error can be compensated in a feedforward manner. The proposed algorithm does not require the model of the system for the error prediction, and thus can be easily applied to conventional control systems. The performance of the system is verified through simulations and experiments.

  • The power wteering system for automobiles is becoming core popular for supporting steering efforts of the drivers, especially for a parking lot maneuver. Though hydraulic power steering has been widely used for a long time, the efficiency of that is not high enough. The motor driven power steering system can solve the problems associated with the hydraulic power steering system. In this study, dynamic model and control algorithm of the ball screw type of MDPS systenem have been derived and analysed by using the method of discrete modeling technology. To improve steering feel and power steering characteristics, the additional scheme is proposed to the conventional power boosting control algorithm. Through simulations, control gain effects to the steering angle gain in the frequency domain were verified. The steering returnability and steering torque phase lag in on-center handing test were performed also.

  • High precision machining technology has become one of the important parts in the development of a precision machine. Such a machine requires high precision positioning as well as high speed on a large workspace. For machining systems having a high precision positioning with a long stroke, it is necessary to examine the repeatability of reference position decision. Though ball-screw driven linear stages equipped linear scale have high precision feed drivers and a long stroke, they have some limitations for reference position decision if they have not equipped the accurate home sensor. This study is performed to experimentally examine the repeatability for home position decision of a magnetic sensor as a home switch of ball-screw driven linear stage by using capacitance probe.

  • Contents 1We developed a new type of lower part of the human-sized BWR (biped walking robot) driven by a new actuator based on the ball screw which has high strength and high gear ratio. Each leg of the robot is composed of three pitch Joints and one roll joint. In all, a 8 degree-of-freedom robot was developed. A new type of actuator for the robot is proposed, which is composed of four bar link mechanism driven by the ball screw.   • A automatic component inserting system for industrial PCB is developed in this paper. This system has not been developed in Korea. Most domestic companies produce PCB manually. This process requires highly-skilled staff. Therefor, we developed a PCB inserting system for automation of the process and improved productivity. There are low parts in this system; press, table, tool change and control part. A hybrid press cylinder with pneumatic and hydraulic is used in the press part. The table part consists of pneumatic actuators, stepping motors and ball-screw mechanism. In the tool change part, upper tools can be exchanged automatically for the inserting of various components. The control part consists of motor drivers, PLCs and power supply.
