  • Three species of foreign barnacles were found to invade into Korean interitidal seashores: Balanus amphitrite, B. ebumeus and B. improvisus. The southeastern coast of Korea, near Pusan, is the area where all the specimens of three species were discovered and the populations of these species were well establishe. B. amphitrite is the earliest invader(probably invaded around early 1970's) and most widely distributed in Korea. It is now distributed all around Korea, except the Yellow Sea coast, north of Mokpo. B. improvisus has been successful to expand its reange to the northern part of Korean coast of the East Sea, whereas B. eburneus is restricted to the southeastern coast. B. amphitrite is successfully competing with the native barnacle, B. albicostatus, and in several areas where the mixed populations of the two species occur, the latter species is found to excluded. The Yellow Sea coast has not been invaded by the foreign barnacles, the reason of which is not known.

  • Chthamalus challengeri Hoek was collected from intertidal rocks to rear the larvae from hatching through nauplius to cyprid in the laboratory. Larval development consists of six nauplius stages and a cyprid. Unilobed labrum with a prominent protuberance and the frontolateral horns folded under the anterior cephalic shield margin are diagnostic features through all nauplius stages. The posterior border of the cephalic shield bears no posterior shield spines in nauplius stages IV-Ⅵ. There is a specific hispid seta in the fourth group of the antennal endopodite. Morphological features such as the cephalic shield, labrum, abdominal process, antennules, antennae and mandibles in all nauplius and cyprid stages are illustrated and described. The numerical setations of the antennule are found to aid in the intraspecific identification of barnacle nauplius stages without dissection. The keys to each stage of the barnacle larvae in Korean coastal waters are provided based on the reared nauplii of seven species: Pollicipes mitella Octomeris sulcata, Chthamalus challengeri, Balanus albicostatus B. trigonus, B. amphitrite, and B. improvisus inhabiting Korean coastal waters.

  • In order to clarify major reasons of a poor harvest, the Porphyra-cultivation ground was investigated in Kwangyang Bay in terms of the laver production per unit area, diseases, and fouling organisms from January to April in 1986. The laver production per unit area of the control station was more than that of the study area at 'Soppal' cultivation ground, while the difference at the cultivation groud using 'nets' seemed to be insignificant. The vertical attachment range of laver was directly associated with the production per unit area at 'Soppal' cultivation ground. The number of young thalli of 1-3 mm length was almost similar between control and study sites at 'nets' cultivation ground. Two kinds of diseases in cultured laver, the crape and shot hole, were prevalent during the study period. However, the affected thalli were gradually decreased at the end of the study period. Major fouling organisms attached to 'Soppal' were Balanus albicostatus, Enteromorpha prolifera, Capsosiphon fulvescens, and Scytosiphon lomentaria. In conclusion, the poor harvest of laver in 1986 may result from such following problems as the decrease in vertical attachment range of laver and fouling problems as the decrease in vertical attachment range of laver and fouling organisms at 'Soppal' cultivation ground, prevalence of certain diseases, changes in environmental conditions, arrangement and maintenance of facilities for laver cultivation.

  • Macrobenthic biodiversity in the rocky intertidal areas of the Tae-an region, Republic of Korea, has decreased since the Hebei Spirit oil spill in December 2007. We aimed to investigate ecological roles of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) because recruitment and growth of oysters are critical to the recovery of damaged rocky shore ecosystem. We surveyed two sites monthly: natural rocky substrate and farming substrate, from July 2012 to January 2013 to identify and compare the changes in macrobenthic fauna. The abundance of young oysters was higher at the natural site. On the other hand, the mean height of oyster on the farming substrate was more than twice as great. The abundance of oyster at the natural site increased until October and then continuously decreased until end of study period. However, the abundance of oyster at the farming site constantly decreased from the beginning of study period. These different growth patterns might be attributable to spatial competition between oyster and a barnacle species (Balanus albicostatus) and environmental factors. At the natural site, physical stress factors including dramatic temperature changes and desiccation a few of the major factors limiting growth during aerial exposure. In addition, motile macrobenthos could be detrimental to oysters because they interrupt filter-feeding activities and hence hamper the growth of oysters. We show the higher recruitment of oysters at the natural site and healthy growth in the farming substrate are due to complicated differences in physical and biological stress factors.

  • To understand the role of protozoa in the early formation of microbial fouling community, the studies on the formation of microbial film, the succession of microbial fouling communities, and the grazing pressure on bacteria population in microbial film were carried out in the laboratory, Inchon outer port and Inchon inner harbour. Bacteria and heterotrophic flagellates formed primary microbial film on the aluminum surface within 6 hours and oligotrich ciliates were observed 2 cells $mm^{-2}$ on the same surface at 9 hours in Inchon inner harbour which had physically stagnant condition. The larvaes of Balanus albicostatus which were dominant meiobenthos in Inchon coastal area attached on the glass surface at the first day of experiment. Heterotrophic flagellates showed maximum abundance of 465 cells $mm^{-2}$ at the 13rd day and ciliates showed maximum abundance of 63 cells $mm^{-2}$ at the 11st day in the Inchon inner harbour. In the Inchon outer port which opens to the outer sea, the maximum abundance of protozoa occurred at early phase, but not so many. The dominant heterotrophic flagellates were Metrornonas simplex and Bodonids. Dominant ciliates were small tintinnids and oligotrich ciliate Strombidium sp., Large Strombidium (oligotrich ciliate) and sessile Acineta turberosa (suctorian ciliate) occurred after 10 days. The attached larvae of Balanus occurred as biofouling organism on the early surface and showed maximum abundance of 18 indiv. $cm^{-2}$ at 7th day. At that time, adult barnacles were observed on the surface and dead barnacles were observed after two days. Except barnacles, the larvaes of Anthozoa sp., Oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and Polychaeta were observed on the surface from 3rd day. 3 benthic copepods including Harpacticus sp., I isopod, 1 polychaeta and 1 gastropoda were observed as predators of the microbial film on the surface after 7 days when microbial film developed very well. Although the ingestion rates of protozoa on the bactctia of the rnicrobi31 film were relatively low, the average grazing rate of protozoa on bacteria was high of 0.058 $h^{-1}$. This implied that the grazing pressure of protozoa influences the mortality of bacteria populations on the microbial film. but protozoa cannot get enough energy from only bacteria on the microbial film.

  • Mussels are major fouling organisms causing serious technical and economic problems. In this study, antifouling activity towards mussel was found in three compounds isolated from a marine bacterium associated with the sea anemone Haliplanella sp. This bacterial strain, called PE2, was identified as Vibrio alginolyticus using morphology, biochemical tests, and phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of 16S rRNA and four housekeeping genes (rpoD, gyrB, rctB, and toxR). Three small-molecule compounds (indole, 3-formylindole, and cyclo (Pro-Leu)) were purified from the ethyl acetate extract of V. alginolyticus PE2 using column chromatography techniques. They all significantly inhibited byssal thread production of the green mussel Perna viridis, with $EC_{50}$ values of $24.45{\mu}g/ml$ for indole, $50.07{\mu}g/ml$ for 3-formylindole, and $49.24{\mu}g/ml$ for cyclo (Pro-Leu). Previous research on the antifouling activity of metabolites from marine bacteria towards mussels is scarce. Indole, 3-formylindole and cyclo (Pro-Leu) also exhibited antifouling activity against settlement of the barnacle Balanus albicostatus ($EC_{50}$ values of 8.84, 0.43, and $11.35{\mu}g/ml$, respectively) and the marine bacterium Pseudomonas sp. ($EC_{50}$ values of 42.68, 69.68, and $39.05{\mu}g/ml$, respectively). These results suggested that the three compounds are potentially useful for environmentally friendly mussel control and/or the development of new antifouling additives that are effective against several biofoulers.
