Effects of Fall Experience on the Balancing Ability and Ankle Flexibility in Elderly People

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of fall injuries on the balancing abilities and ankle flexibility. Fifteen of the voluntary participants had no experience of falling in the last two years (none falling group, NFG) and 15 others experienced at least one (falling group, FG). Static balance (sway length, sway area), dynamic balance (timed up and go (TUG), and functional to reach test (FRT) were measured in each group. In comparison of static balance, sway length was not significantly different between NFG and FG in both eyes open and eyes close, however the sway area of the FG was significantly wider than that of the NFG (p<.05). In dynamic balance comparisons, TUG of FG was significantly longer than that of NFG (p <.05), however FRT and STS were no significant difference between groups. Ankle flexibility was significantly higher in NFG than in FG. This study suggests that the fall prevention program should include methods for improving ankle stability and lower extremity function.

북한이탈여성의 일과 자녀돌봄 양립 경험에 관한 융합연구 (Convergent Research on Balancing Experience of Work and Child care of North Korean Female Defectors)

  • 본 연구는 남한에 거주하고 있는 북한이탈여성의 일과 자녀돌봄 양립 경험을 총체적으로 이해하고 분석하고자 실시되었다. 연구자는 서울 및 수도권에 거주하고 있는 맞벌이 가정의 북한이탈여성 5명을 선택하고 심층면접을 실시하여 자료를 수집하였다. 자료는 현상학적 질적연구 방법으로 분석하여 구성요소 5개와 하위구성요소 14개가 도출되었다. 연구결과 <북한에서의 성장 배경>을 가진 연구참여자들은 <탈북과정에서의 가족 해체 및 재구성>의 복잡한 과정을 거치면서 남한에 입국했다. <남한 정착과정에서 자녀돌봄의 어려움>과 <진로 선택과 취업 지속의 어려움>사이에서 고군분투했으며 그와 관련하여 <조화로운 일-자녀돌봄의 양립을 위한 제안>을 제시하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 북한이탈여성의 일과 자녀돌봄을 균형있게 양립할 수 있는 실천적 서비스를 위한 제안으로서 부모교육, 경력경로 형성 프로그램, 성인지적 관점의 정책개발을 제시하였다. 또한 연구의 한계와 후속연구에 대한 제언을 제공하였다.

  • KARI SUAV (Smart Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) program is currently on the phase of ground and flight test. SUAV is a tilt rotor aircraft having the capability of vertical take-off/landing and high speed forward flight. The SUAV rotor system is 3-bladed, gimbaled hub type, which is not common for conventional helicopter configuration. In this paper, detailed procedure and method of rotor pitch rigging, tracking and balancing were described based on the experience of SUAV ground test.

낙상 경험 유무에 따른 여성 노인의 보행과 균형 능력에 관한 연구 (A Comparison Study of Walk and Balance Ability of Women Elderly with or Without Falls Experience)

  • Background: The elderly are likely to fall due to physical and mental atrophies, and experiencing falls may result in fear of falls and lack of self-confidence, which also leads to hesitation to physical activities and changes in walk and balance, the major variables in independent daily life. Methods: In three senior citizen centers located in D city, 22 elderly women aged 65 or older were chosen, and they filled in the questionnaire which included their agreement to voluntarily participate in the survey and medical histories. As to whether they had falls experience, the medical history items in the questionnaire asked them if they had falling down or falls once a year, twice for the three years. The objects were divided to NFE (non-falls experience) and FE (falls experience). Results: 1. As to walking abilities, significant difference was found between NFE and FE regarding walk width, stepping with two feet, and stride length while there was no significant different in terms of cadence. 2. As to balancing abilities, was significant difference between NFE and FE in terms of the physical body center area. As to the sit-to-stand, tandom gait test, no significant difference was found, and neither in the timed up and go test. Conclusions: The elderly with falls experience has inferior walking and balancing abilities to those without falls experience, and thus they are more exposed to the risks of falls.

파독간호사의 간호경험 (Nursing Care Experience of Korean Nurses Dispatched to West Germany)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the nursing care experience of Korean nurses dispatched to West Germany during 1960~1970s. Methods: Qualitative research using thematic analysis was done. The participants were 13 people who were 60~70 years old. The data were collected by in-depth and focus group interviews from January to June 2016. Results: The nursing experience of Korean nurses dispatched to west Germany were composed of 197 initial codes, 15 sub themes, 4 themes including "Challenging the possibilities", "Wandering in the sea without preparation", "Distinguishing between difference and discrimination", and "Balancing oneself in two chairs". Conclusion: In order for nurses to successfully move to another country, it is needed to educate the language and inform the nursing system and preliminary education on specific nursing activities.

LTE 펨토셀 네트워크를 위한 적응적 주기의 MLB 알고리즘 (Adaptive Periodic MLB Algorithm for LTE Femtocell Networks)

  • 4세대 셀룰러 네트워크의 데이터양이 증가하면서, 사업자들은 이를 수용하기 위한 네트워크의 용량 문제에 직면하였다. 따라서, 이 문제를 해결하고자 저렴하고 낮은 전력으로 동작하는 펨토셀이 제안되었는데, 이것은 실내 음영지역의 해소 및 사용자의 서비스 품질을 향상시키는 장점을 갖는다. 그러나 펨토셀 네트워크는 소수의 셀에 많은 부하 (Load)가 집중될 가능성이 있다. 이를 해결하고자, 부하 분산 (Load balancing) 알고리즘 중 하나인 MLB (Mobility Load Balancing) 알고리즘이 제안되었다. 이 알고리즘은 부하 분산을 위해 셀 외곽의 사용자를 인접한 셀로 강제 핸드오버한다. 본 논문에서는 주기적으로 동작하는 MLB 알고리즘에서, 주기가 변했을 때 네트워크 성능 지표들이 어떻게 변화하는지를 확인한다. 실험 결과, 짧은 주기로 동작할 때 데이터 차단율이 낮고, 긴 주기로 동작할 때 핸드오버의 빈도가 낮으며 시간당 처리량 (Throughput)이 높은 것을 확인하였다. 이 결과를 바탕으로, 본 논문에서는 적응적 (Adaptive) 주기의 MLB 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 제안된 알고리즘은 긴 주기와 짧은 주기로 동작하는 알고리즘의 장점을 모두 포함하는 것을 실험적으로 확인하였다.

  • 철강 코일 또는 강판과 같은 특수물류는 경험이 많은 인력에 의존하여 물류가 선적되어 배치되고 있다. 따라서 인간의 실수나 경험의 부재로 인한 미숙함으로 인한 사고 발생 가능성이 매우 크다. 이러한 사고 발생 가능성을 사전에 방지하고, 특수물류에 요구되는 보안 적용사항과 화물의 안정성 여부, 그리고 정확한 적하목록 체크를 위한 운영 시스템에 대한 요구가 발생하고 있다. 또한, 선박의 균형을 맞추기 위한 정확한 선적 검수가 필요한 상황이다. 본 논문은 현재 시행하고 있는 선적 검수의 문제점들을 분석하고, 이를 개선하기 위한 WEB 기반 항만 특수물류 선적 검수 및 밸런싱 운영 시스템을 제안하였다.

BOXES-based Cooperative Fuzzy Control for Cartpole System

  • Two fuzzy controllers defined by 2 input variables cooperate to control a cartpole system in terms of balancing as well as centering. The cooperation is due to the BOXES scheme that selects one of the fuzzy controllers for each time step according to the content of box that is established through the critic of the control action by the fuzzy controllers. It is found that the control scheme is good at controlling the cartpole system so that the system is stabilized fast while the BOXES develops its ability to select proper fuzzy controller through experience.

  • A fuzzy teaming controller is experimentally designed to control the ball k beam system in this paper. Although most fuzzy controllers have been built just to emulate human decision-making behavior, it is necessary to construct the rule bases by using a learning method with self-improvement when it is difficult or impossible to get them only by expert's experience. The algorithm introduces a reference model to generate a desired output and minimizes a performance index function based on the error and error-rate using the gradient-decent method. In our balancing experiment of the ball & beam system, this paper shows that the fuzzy control rules by learning are superior to the expert's experience.

노인 낙상군과 노인 비낙상군의 비교: 균형능력과 우울감 및 삶의 질 (Comparison of Elderly Fallers and Elderly Non-Fallers: Balancing Ability, Depression, and Quality of Life)

  • Fall is one of the most intimidating health conditions in elders. Comprehensive assessment is necessary to understand the individual and environmental aspects of the falls such as balancing abilities, depression, and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to compare the balancing ability, depression, and quality of life between elderly fallers and elderly non-fallers. Thirty-two community-dwelling elders (fifteen males and seventeen females between 65 and 83 years old), who have experienced fall on walking during last twelve months, were involved in the elderly fallers group. And twenty-four males and twenty-two females between 65 and 83 years old of community-dwelling elders, who have no experienced fall on walking during last twelve months, were involved in the elderly non-fallers group. Berg balance scale (BBS), timed up and go test (TUG), and functional reach test (FRT), were used to evaluate the ability of the physical balance. 'Beck depression scale in Korean' questionnaire was used to assess the depression. 'Korean version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument-Bref' questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life. The results were as follows: 1) Balancing abilities measured by the BBS, TUG in the elderly fallers group were meaningfully lower than that of the elderly non-fallers group (p<.05), whereas no significant difference in the FRT was found (p>.05). 2) Depression level in the elderly fallers group was significantly higher than that of the elderly non-fallers group (p<.05). 3) Quality of life in the elderly fallers group was significantly lower than that of the elderly non-fallers group, excluding environment domain (p<.05). Therefore, in order for clinical evaluation of the community-dwelling elders those with reduced balancing ability, it is necessary to evaluate and understand the fall experience, depression, and quality of life.
