  • Adsorption by granule activated carbon(GAC) is recognized as an efficient method for the removal of perfluorinated compounds(PFCs) in water, while the poor regeneration and exchange cycles of granule active carbon make it difficult to sustain adsorption capacity for PFCs. In this study, the behavior of PFCs in the effluent of wastewater treatment plant (S), the raw water and the effluents of drinking water treatment plants (M1 and M2) located in Nakdong river waegwan watershed was monitored. Optimal regeneration and exchange cycles was also investigated in drinking water treatment plants and lab-scale adsorption tower for stable PFCs removal. The mean effluent concentration of PFCs was 0.044 0.04 PFHxS g/L, 0.000 0.00 PFOS g/L, 0.037 0.011 PFOA g/L, for S wastewater treatment plant, 0.023 0.073 PFHxS g/L, 0.000 0.00 PFOS g/L, 0.013 0.008 PFOA g/L for M1 drinking water treatment plant and 0.023 0.073 PFHxS g/L, 0.000 0.01 PFOS g/L, 0.011 0.009 PFOA g/L for M2 drinking water treatment plant. The adsorption breakthrough behaviors of PFCs in GAC of drinking water treatment plant and lab-scale adsorption tower indicated that reactivating carbon 3 times per year suggested to achieve and maintain good removal of PFASs. Considering the results of mass balance, the adsorption amount of PFCs was improved by using GAC with high-specific surface area (2,500㎡/g), so that the regeneration cycle might be increased from 4 months to 10 months even if powdered activated carbon(PAC) could be alternatives. This study provides useful insights into the removal of PFCs in drinking water treatment plant.

  • The distributed hydrologic model has been considerably improved due to rapid development of computer hardware technology as well as the increased accessibility and the applicability of hydro-geologic information using GIS. It has been acknowledged that physically-based distributed hydrologic model require significant amounts of data for their calibration, so its application at ungauged catchments is very limited. In this regard, this study was intended to develop a distributed hydrologic model (S-RAT) that is mainly based on conceptually grid-based water balance model. The proposed model shows advantages as a new distributed rainfall-runoff model in terms of their simplicity and model performance. Another advantage of the proposed model is to effectively assess spatio-temporal variation for the entire runoff process. In addition, S-RAT does not rely on any commercial GIS pre-processing tools because a built-in GIS pre-processing module was developed and included in the model. Through the application to the two pilot basins, it was found that S-RAT model has temporal and spatial transferability of parameters and also S-RAT model can be effectively used as a radar data-driven rainfall-runoff model.

  • The characteristics, intensity and direction of groundwater.surface water interactions are controlled by groundwater head gradients, hydraulic conductivity and by the riverbed geometry. As a result of the spatial heterogeneity of these factors and the subsequent variability of the impact of these interaction processes, the water balance is also characterized by highly variable spatial patterns and temporal dynamics. However, spatially detailed studies concerning the spatio-temporal variability of the extent and intensity of surface-groundwater interactions have been limited to the investigation of cross-sections or small stream reaches. Thus, the extensive study on the watershed based interaction between surface water and groundwater is to be analyzed. In this study, the intensity and the spatial extent of interactions along the stream were found by using integrated SWAT-MODFLOW model. This integrated modeling approach was applied to Anyangcheon watershed in Korea. The effluent stream characteristics were found in the watershed, namely, baseflow was annually discharged except heavy rainy periods. The intensity and the spatial extent of surface-groundwater interactions in different sub-watersheds were found on a daily basis. The influential extent of surface-groundwater interaction become larger as the watershed elevations are lower.

  • An n-tuple ($a_1,a_2,{\ldots},a_n$) is symmetric, if $a_k$ = $a_{n-k+1}$, $1{\leq}k{\leq}n$. Let $H_n$ = {$(a_1,a_2,{\ldots},a_n)$ ; $a_k$ ${\in}$ {+,-}, $a_k$ = $a_{n-k+1}$, $1{\leq}k{\leq}n$} be the set of all symmetric n-tuples. A symmetric n-sigraph (symmetric n-marked graph) is an ordered pair $S_n$ = (G,${\sigma}$) ($S_n$ = (G,${\mu}$)), where G = (V,E) is a graph called the underlying graph of $S_n$ and ${\sigma}$:E ${\rightarrow}H_n({\mu}:V{\rightarrow}H_n)$ is a function. The restricted super line graph of index r of a graph G, denoted by $\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r$(G). The vertices of $\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r$(G) are the r-subsets of E(G) and two vertices P = ${p_1,p_2,{\ldots},p_r}$ and Q = ${q_1,q_2,{\ldots},q_r}$ are adjacent if there exists exactly one pair of edges, say $p_i$ and $q_j$, where $1{\leq}i$, $j{\leq}r$, that are adjacent edges in G. Analogously, one can define the restricted super line symmetric n-sigraph of index r of a symmetric n-sigraph $S_n$ = (G,${\sigma}$) as a symmetric n-sigraph $\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r$($S_n$) = ($\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r(G)$, ${\sigma}$'), where $\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r(G)$ is the underlying graph of $\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r(S_n)$, where for any edge PQ in $\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r(S_n)$, ${\sigma}^{\prime}(PQ)$=${\sigma}(P){\sigma}(Q)$. It is shown that for any symmetric n-sigraph $S_n$, its $\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r(S_n)$ is i-balanced and we offer a structural characterization of super line symmetric n-sigraphs of index r. Further, we characterize symmetric n-sigraphs $S_n$ for which $\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r(S_n)$~$\mathcal{L}_r(S_n)$ and $$\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r(S_n){\sim_=}\mathcal{L}_r(S_n)$$, where ~ and $$\sim_=$$ denotes switching equivalence and isomorphism and $\mathcal{R}\mathcal{L}_r(S_n)$ and $\mathcal{L}_r(S_n)$ are denotes the restricted super line symmetric n-sigraph of index r and super line symmetric n-sigraph of index r of $S_n$ respectively.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate observed runoff data collected every 10 minutes at stream gauging stations in Jeju Island using a physically-based model, SWAT. The Hancheon watershed was selected as study area, and ephemeral stream algorithm suggested by previous research was incorporated into the model, which is able to simulate ephemeral runoff pattern of Jeju streams. Simulated runoff and runoff rates were compared to observations during 2008-2013, which showed 'very good' performance rating in Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (ME) and determination coefficient ($R^2$). Some observations had problems such that runoff rates were very high for some rainfall events with little amount of antecedent rainfall, and were very low or missing with much rainfall comparing to previous researches. Additionally, regression equation between precipitation and simulated runoff was generated with high degree of correlation. The equation can be utilized to simply predict reasonable runoff, or to investigate and complement the abnormal or missing data of observations on the assumption that modelling results were sufficiently reliable and satisfactory. As results, minimizing the error in calibrating the model by evaluation of observed data would be helpful to accurately model the rainfall-runoff characteristics and analyze the water balance components of watersheds in Jeju Island.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of shoot twist on fruitfulness and fruit quality of 'Campbell Early' grapevine. Proper pruning and training are essential to produce a good yield of high-quality fruit and to maintain the balance between vegetative growth and fruiting. The most common problem in spur-pruned 'Campbell Early' cultivar is that vigorous buds has low fruitfulness and thereby the shoot become more vigorous the following spring because of lower crop load. Therefore, shoot twists in very vigorous 'Campbell Early' canes (above 10.0 mm) were performed on the third nodes and the $7^{th}$ nodes of each shoot at 7 days before bloom and full bloom, respectively. Sprouting date, blooming date were not significantly different among the treatments while, harvesting date was delayed approximately 3 days. However, number of berries per cluster, cluster weight and fruitfulness were significantly higher in the shoot twist treatment on the third nodes than the control that was topping alone. Combination treatments of shoot twist and topping had an additive effect on increasing cluster weight resulting in higher increase of yield by 12.1 ㎏ per vine. These results indicated that the shoot twist on very vigorous canes of 'Campbell Early' grapevine for well fruitfulness seemed to be very effective.

  • This research was conducted to find the optimal condition in codigestion of food waste and sewage sludge with various mixing ratios. The analysis of degradation characteristics were based on the variations of methane production as well as methane production rate (MPR). BMP values were getting higher as the addition of foodwaste increased. But the lag-phase were prolonged when the foodwaste was over 40%, Nonlinear regression was conducted with the cumulative methane production data. Not only thermophilic but mesophilic condition, 40% of foodwaste addition showed maximum MPR. Higher mixing ratio which is over 50% were unprofitable in gaining higher MPR values. The most important factor in thermophilic co-digestion was substrate concentration. But in mesophilic co-digestion, both substrate concentration the mixing ratio had major effects on MPR. The most probable reasons of the synergetic effects in co-digestion of foodwaste and sewage sludge were the balanced nutrient expressed as C/N ratio and increased kinetic constants of hydrolysis by the mixed co-substrates.

  • When feeling the pulse, healthy man' pulse is the criterion for diagnosis whether you are a sick person. Healthy man is defined as one who is harmonious and not sick in sympathy with natural order. Among the factors for being Healthy man, breathing and pulsation, Chon-gu(寸口) and Inyeong(人迎) are most closely connected with the representative methods of feeling the pulse which are used currently. According to "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)" on breathing and pulsation, the pulse beats twice per a breathing-in and a breathing-out each. And for a specific breathing, it beats 5 times including the remnant with a big breath. That the pulse beats twice means that it beats not only twice, but also regularly and repeatedly. The remnant is related to the meaning on a leap month, 5-time beating during a breath is connected with the contents of Osipyeong(五十營). A human is not always in stable and sticks to balance continuously with changes under the circumstances. So when it comes to a criterion how to measure the pulsation frequency, breathing is much more reasonable than pulsation and breathing calculated for a minute. According to "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)", Healthy man is the person of whose Chon-gu and Inyeong are in order and much the same in response to each other. Although there is a minor difference in the meaning of term between Chon-gu and Gigu(氣口), Maekgu(脈口) in originally, it is used as almost same meaning when Chon-gu is used in opposition to Inyeong. Afterwards, depending on medical men, around neck or Chon-gu of the left hand are measured for Inyeong. However, Inyeong described in "Naegyeong(內經)" is Jokyangmyeong(足陽明) and it means the Hyeol(穴) around neck where the pulse beats, it looks like about the carotid area. Chon-gu is fall under Eum(陰) and Inyeong(人迎) is fall under Yang(陽). Therefore Chon-gu is continuous with eumgyeong(陰經) and Inyeong is continuous with yanggyeong(陽經). In addition, the pulse and the four seasons meet each other and Inyeong is a little stronger in spring summer and Chongu is a little stronger in fall winter.

  • As in the past, we are concerned today with the magnitudes of mineral resources and the adequacy of these resources to meet future needs. In looking at global resource issues, we should consider the need for the resource, its supply, and the environmental consequences of using it. The need for a resource can become a resource dependency, especially as the global population expands and each of us becomes increasingly dependent upon hundreds of natural materials. Therefore, our great mineral consumption makes the human population a true 'Geologic Force', which will be even more significant in the future when the global population is projected to reach alarming proportions. Although our supplies of mineral resources probably will be sufficient for the 21s1 century, the uneven distribution of minerals in the Earth's crust almost certainly will continue to be a major problem The most likely result will be major shifts in both prices and sources of supply of many mineral resources. As for energy resources, we must avoid an obsessive dependency on one fuel and expand instead to thor energy resources. Finally, because the use of resources affects the environment, we need to focus on resource exploitation and global pollution, particularly in regard to ground water and arable land. We must manage our resources so as to be in balance with our environment. And the accelerated industrialization of South Korean economy over the last three decades has resulted in the mass consumption of nuneral commodities. South Korea has around 50 useful mineral commodities for the mineral industry, among 330 kinds of minerals described. The component ratio of the mining industry sector of the gross national production(GNP) in South Korea dropped from $1.2\%\;in\;1971\;to\;0.34\%$ in 1997 due to the rapid growth of other industries In the countxy. During the period from 1971 to 1997, the average growth rate of mineral consumption in South Korea was $9.13\%$ yearly and that of GNP per capita was $14.97\%$. The mineral consumptions per capita showed a continual Increase during the last 30 years as follows(parenthesis. GNP per capita): 0.99 metric tons in 1971($\$289$), 3.83 metric tons in 1989($\$5,210$), 6.11 metric tons in 1995 ($\$10,037$), and 6.66 metric tons in 1997($9,511). The total amount of mineral consumption in South Korea was 33 million tons of 32 mineral commodities in 1971, and 306 million metric tons of 47 mineral commodities In 1997.

  • The physicochemical properties of clay minerals have been investigated at the atomistic to nano scale. The microscopic studies are often challenging to perform by using experimental approaches alone. In particular, hydroxyl groups of octahedral sheets in 2:1 clay minerals have been hypothesized to impact the sorption process of metal cations; however, X-ray based techniques alone, a common tool for mineral structure examination, cannot properly test the hypothesis. The current study has examined whether computational mineralogy techniques can be applied to examine the hydroxyl structures of clay minerals. Based on quantum-mechanics and molecular-mechanics computational methods, geometry optimizations were carried out for representative dioctahedral and trioctahedral phyllosilicate minerals. Both methods well reproduced the experimental lattice parameters; however, for structural distortion occurring in the tetrahedral or octahedral sheets, molecular mechanics showed significant deviations from experimental data. The orientation angle of the hydroxyl with respect to (001) basal plane is determined by the balance of repulsion between the hydroxyl proton and Si cations of tetrahedral sites; the quantum-mechanics method predicted $25-26^{\circ}$ for the angle, whereas the angle predicted by the molecular-mechanics method was much higher by $10^{\circ}$ (i.e., $35^{\circ}$). These results demonstrate that computational mineralogy techniques are a reliable tool for clay mineral studies and can be used to further elucidate the roles of hydroxyls in metal sorption process.
