  • A three dimensional numerical study has been applied to predict the turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics for the rectangular channel with different types of baffles. Four different types of the baffles are used. The inclined baffles have the width of 19.8 cm, the square diamond type hole having one side length of 2.55 cm, and the inclination angle of $5^{\circ}$. Reynolds number is varied between 23,000 and 57,000. The SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model is used in the present numerical study. The validity of the numerical results is examined with the experimental data. The numerical results of the flow field depict that the flow patterns around the different baffle type are entirely different and it significantly affects the local heat transfer characteristics. The heat transfer and friction factor depend significantly on the number of baffle holes. It is found that the heat transfer enhancement of baffle type II (3 hole baffle) has the best values.

  • Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs) have gained wide acceptance as a system for structural control and energy dissipation. However, they face limitation caused by low damping in deep water, which affects their efficiency. Another problem with deep water TLDs is that not all water depth participates in energy dissipation. This paper investigated the effect of upper mounted baffles on the effectiveness of TLDs. The Vertical Blockage Ratio (VBR) of baffles ranged from 10% - 90%. The TLD (with and without baffle), structure, and combined structure with TLD (with and without baffles) were subjected to free and harmonic forced vibrations. Results indicated that baffles could significantly enhance the energy dissipation of TLDs, thus reducing structural responses more than structures equipped with ordinary TLDs. It was found that, there was an optimum value of VBR in which the TLD's efficiency was maximized. When TLD had an appropriate VBR, the structural acceleration and displacement responses were suppressed significantly up to 51% and 56%, respectively.

  • Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs) provide low damping when it comes to deep water condition, and that not all water depth is mobilized in energy dissipation. This research focussed on a method to improve the efficiency of TLDs with deep water condition. Several bottom-mounted baffles were installed inside a TLD and the dynamic characteristics of modified TLDs together with their effect on the vibration control of a SDOF structure were studied experimentally. A series of free vibration and harmonic forced vibration tests were carried out. The controlling parameter in the conducted tests was the Vertical Blocking Ratio (VBR) of baffles. Results indicated that increase in VBR decreases the natural frequency of TLD and increases its damping ratio. It was found that the VBR range of 10% to 30% reduced response of the structure significantly. The modified TLD with the VBR of 30% showed the best performance when reduction in structural responses under harmonic excitations were compared.

  • In the design of super tankers or LNG carriers, which transport a large amount of liquid in the cargo tanks, the structural d11mage due to liquid sloshing is an important problem. The impact pressure from sloshing is most violent when the liquid motion of a partially filled tank is in resonance with the motion of a ship. In this study, the sloshing natural periods of a baffled tank, often installed to reduce liquid motion, is analyzed. A variational method is adopted to estimate the sloshing natural periods for a prismatic cargo tank with baffles of arbitrary filling depth of liquid; the results are compared with Lloyd's Register regulations on sloshing periods. In this study, using an effective liquid-fill-depth concept, sloshing periods for a baffled tank can be expressed by the same form as rectangular prismatic tanks without baffles. In contrast to Lloyd's Register regulations, which can be applicable only to cargo tanks with constant baffle size and distribution, the present results can be applicable to cases of variable baffle size and distribution.

  • Cylindrical array sensor of a surface ship to detect an enemy is normally installed in the sonar dome. Reflected signals by some structures inside the sonar dome make unwanted signals. To minimize unwanted signals, acoustic baffles are used. Acoustic baffles are hard to install and replace, so the durability of acoustic baffles is an important design parameter. To verify the durability of acoustic baffle, accelerated aging tests according to temperature and pressure were performed. Acoustic baffle specimens were made and they are tested the visual and the performance (echo reduction and transmission loss) inspection before and after aging. After the inspection, the effect of accelerated aging of the acoustic baffles were discussed.

  • The concentration of residual chlorine should be kept at over 0.1 mg/L in the circular water tank used in a water purification system. Generally, the concentration of residual chlorine depends on the structure and the volume of water tank, and also the water flow rate. To secure the diffusion time is important to the concentration of residual chlorine. For that reason, the baffles are installed in the circular water tank. In the present study, the variations of water and chlorine concentration were obtained with time using the numerical analysis. And also, the streamlines were shown according to the number of baffles. As a results, the vortex flow appeared between baffles, and the diffusion time of chlorine increased with the more number of baffles.

  • In this study, in order to analyze the effect of cylindrical baffles on the debris flow energy, small-scale tests were conducted using a flume with cylindrical baffles. Various row numbers of installed baffles were considered as a test condition. To investigate the scale effect of debris flow and cylindrical baffles on flow characteristics, large-scale tests were also performed according to varying row numbers of baffle for same baffle configuration with small-scale tests. Both small- and large-scale test results showed that the increase of row number of baffle increase the energy dissipation effect due to reduction of the velocity and flow depth of debris flow.

  • A numerical analysis was made In investigate the pressure diminution of a silencer with baffles for high pressure blast flow fields. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved for an axisymmetric computational domain constructed by multi block Chimera grids. A blast flow field was calculated for the silencers that are with one and three baffles. The evolution of high pressure blast flow fields was observed by depicting calculated contours of pressure. It was found that the tested silencer could achieve 97.7 percent pressure diminution.

  • The transient dynamic-response analysis of fuel-storage tanks of flying vehicles accelerating in the vertical direction is achieved with finite element method. A fuel-storage tank is a representative example of the fluid-structure interaction problem, in which structure and fluid media interact strongly. For the accurate analysis of this complicated fluid-structure system, we employed ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) coupling method. Two types of fuel-storage tanks, one with two baffles and the other without baffle, are considered to examine the effect of baffles. The fuel-storage tank with baffles shows more uniform hydrodynamic pressure distribution, resulting effective stress in structural region and faster convergence from transient to steady states. MSC/Dytran, a commercial FEM software for the 3D coupled dynamic analysis, is used for this analysis.

  • In the present study, numerical simulations were performed in a stirred solid/liquid system by using Eulerian multi-phase model. The transient flow field of liquid and distribution of solid particles were predicted in the stirred tank with pitched paddle impeller and baffles. The Frozen rotor method is adopted to consider the rotating motion of the impeller. The effects of number and width of baffles on the mixing time and the quality of solid suspension in the stirred tank are presented numerically. The result shows that the mixing time decreases as the width and number of baffles increase. The present numerical methodology can be applied to optimizing mixing condition of industrial mixer.
