  • Campsis grandiflora K. Schum. flower was extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH, and concentrated extract was successively partitioned with EtOAc, n-BuOH, and $H_2O$. From n-BuOH fraction, two cyclohexylethanoids were isolated through repeated silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies. Based on physico-chemical data obtained from NMR, MS, and IR, chemical structures of compounds were determined as 1,4-dihydroxy-3,4-(epoxyethano)-5-cyclohexene (1) and cornoside (2). These compounds were isolated for the first time from C. grandiflora K. Schum flower.

  • As popularity of dental implantation is increasing, the number of cases associated with complications also increase. Evaluation on diabetes mellitus is often neglected due to the disease's irrelevance to implantability. However, patients with diabetes mellitus are susceptible to infection due to impaired bactericidal ability of neutrophils, cellular immunity and activity of complements. Due to this established connection between diabetes mellitus and infection, a couple of cases were selected to present patients with diabetes mellitus with glycemic incontrollability, suffering from post-implantation dentigerous inter-fascial space abscess.

  • Dental infections and maxillary sinusitis are the main causes of osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis can occur in all age groups, and is more frequently found in the lower jaw than in the upper jaw. Systemic conditions that can alter the patient's resistance to infection including diabetes mellitus, anemia, and autoimmune disorders are predisposing factors for osteomyelitis. We report a case of uncommon broad maxillary osteonecrosis precipitated by uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic maxillary sinusitis in a female patient in her seventies with no history of bisphosphonate or radiation treatment.

  • CDK2 is a key regulator of cell cycle progression. In this study, we screened for miRNAs targeting CDK2 using a luciferase-3'-untranslated region reporter assay. Among 11 hit miRNAs, miR-509-3p reduced CDK2 protein levels and significantly inhibited cancer cell growth. Microarray, Western blotting, and luciferase reporter analyses revealed additional targets of miR-509-3p, including Rac1 and PIK3C2A. Overexpression of miR-509-3p induced G1 cell-cycle arrest and inhibited colony formation and migration. RNAi experiments indicated that the growth-inhibitory effects of miR-509-3p may occur through down-regulation of CDK2, Rac1, and PIK3C2A. Targeting of multiple growth regulatory genes by miR-509-3p may contribute to effective anti-cancer therapy.

  • Warthin's tumour is also known as papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum or adenolymphoma. This tumour represents 6% of all salivary gland tumour, and is the second most common neoplasm of the salivary gland. It occurs mostly in the parotid gland and in rare instances, it has been reported to occur within the submandibular gland or minor salivary glands. In the past, there was higher incidence in males than females, but more recent investigation shows a more balanced sex predilection. The mean age at diagnosis is 62 years and this tumour is uncommon in a patients younger than age 40. This tumour occurs most frequently in the tail of the parotid gland near the angle of the mandible. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice. But sometimes, parotidectomy is recommended because of its potential for being multifocal.

  • TMJ ankylosis is defined as a mobile disorder of jaw such as mouth opening limitation, limitation of anterior or/and lateral movement of TMJ. Kazanjian published first clinical report about classification of TMJ ankylosis dividing with intracapsular ankylosis and extracapsular ankylosis. TMJ ankylosis is resulted from trauma, infection, metastatic tumor, irradiation, burn and etc. When TMJ ankylosis is manifested in growing period, it affects to functional disorder and development and position of mandible, so it can result in maxillofacial deformity such as facial asymmetry, micrognathia, malocclusion. For treatment of TMJ ankylosis, various surgical interventions were devised ; condylectomy, gap arthroplasty, interpositional arthroplasty and TMJ reconstruction. So, we report our results with documental study and cases of true ankylosis in our department.

  • Mania in psychiatry describes not only the state of temporary elation of the mood but also of the general mental function such as contents of a thought, thinking process, motivation, enthusiasm, interest, behavior, slumber and physical activities. The time of period when the above changes of mood, mental and behavioral disorder appear is called a manic episode. Postoperative mania is very rare and it has been reported only 5 times in english literature. It's an extremely rare case which has not yet been reported in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. Patients normally deny the symptoms and it is easy to miss the diagnosis since the patient tends to seem content and happy. Patients show the following initial symptoms of mania - postoperative insomnia, atypical gregariousness, euphoria and unstability. Patients who are not disaffected with insomnia can also be included.

  • Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is very aggressive and represents approximately 1% of all chondrosarcomas. While it affects a very wide age range, the peak frequency is in the second decade of life. It may occur in the head and rib region with a predilection for the maxillofacial skeleton. The small cell undifferentiated component may assume a hemangiopericytoma-like vascular pattern and should be distinguished from hemangiopericytoma. Treatment is en bloc resection, the intended tissue margins of excision should be designed to extend well beyond the actual tumor margin, as mesenchymal chondrosarcomas. Aggressive behavior of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the jaw, with a tendency for delayed recurrence and metastasis even many years after treatment. The most frequent site of metastasis was the lung. Here we present 52 years old, female case of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma occurs on Rt. mandible.

  • Objecitve: To present criteria for acupuncture standardization, which will improve the quality of acupuncture and secure safety, through studies of the biocompatibility of acupuncture needles. Methods: Acupuncture needles distributed in Korea were studied. Acute poisonous tests and pyrogenicity materials tests were executed to study the biocompatibility of acupuncture needles. Results & Conclusions: All 3 brands of acupuncture needles commonly distributed in Korea were found suitable for medical use, through acute poisonous tests and pyrogenicity materials tests. However, the medical instrument standards of the Korea Food and Drug Administration for acupuncture lack criteria concerning acute poisonous tests and pyrogenicity materials tests. The criteria for these tests should be standardized in order to secure the biocompatibility of acupuncture needles.

  • Cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) catalyzes the acylation of cholesterol to cholesteryl ester with long chain fatty acids and ACAT inhibition is a useful strategy for treating hypercholesterolemia or atherosclerosis. Inhibitory effects on ACAT of the MeOH extracts prepared from 163 edible plants were evaluated. 15 species out of 163 species exhibited higher than 50% of inhibition on the hACAT-1 and 9 species exhibited higher than 50% of inhibition on the hACAT-2 activity at their concentration of $100\;{\mu}g/mL$.
