  • In 2006~2010, leaf spot symptoms, that is, small, yellow spots that turned into dark brown-to-black lesions surrounded by a yellow halo, were observed on Cymbidium spp. in Gongju, Taean, and Gapyeong in Korea. A Fusarium species was continuously isolated from symptomatic leaves; in pathogenicity testing, isolates caused leaf spot symptoms consisting of sunken, dark brown lesions similar to the original ones. The causal pathogen was identified as Fusarium subglutinans based on morphological and translation elongation factor 1-alpha sequence analyses. This is the first report of F. subglutinans as the cause of leaf spot disease in Cymbidium spp. in Korea.

  • A Colletotrichum species was isolated from leaves of Cymbidium exhibiting symptoms of anthracnose. In this study, the isolates obtained were identified based on recent taxonomic approaches for the genus Colletotrichum. The identity of the causal pathogen was confirmed using morphological data and phylogenetic analysis of combined multi-gene dataset (internal transcribed spacer, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, chitin synthase-1, actin, histone3, beta-tubulin, and calmodulin). Pathogenicity testing revealed that the isolates were pathogenic to Cymbidium. Based on these results, the fungal pathogen occurring on Cymbidium orchids was identified as Colletotrichum cymbidiicola, which is a newly recorded species in Korea.

  • This work describes efforts in the fabrication and testing of robust microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Robustness is typically achieved by investigating non-silicon substrates and materials for MEMS fabrication. Some of the traditional MEMS fabrication techniques are applicable to robust MEMS, while other techniques are drawn from other technology areas, such as electronic packaging. The fabrication technologies appropriate for robust MEMS are illustrated through laminated polymer membrane based pressure sensor arrays. Each array uses a stainless steel substrate, a laminated polymer film as a suspended movable plate, and a fixed, surface micromachined back electrode of electroplated nickel. Over an applied pressure range from 0 to 34 kPa, the net capacitance change was approximately 0.14 pF. An important attribute of this design is that only the steel substrate and the pressure sensor inlet is exposed to the flow; i.e., the sensor is self-packaged.

  • Temperature distribution measured to estimate condition of an electrical apparatus is an absolute reference for the apparatus conditions and the difference between the reference temperature and the current one. Because a passive thermography without the external thermal stimulation shows the difference in surface temperature between the object and back ground, the results can apply only to the estimation or the monitoring for the condition of terminal loose and the overload pertaining to the rise in temperature. However, a thermal flow in the active thermography is differently generated by the structure and condition of the surface and subsurface. This paper presents the nondestructive testing using the behavior and deals with the results by heat injection and cooling to the apparatus. The buried discontinuity of subsurface could be detected by these techniques.

  • In order to development of diagnosis system for mold transformer, partial discharge measurement technique is recommended the best effective method for the evaluation of insulation condition. However, this technique was not applied to mold transformer yet. The purpose of this paper is to describe the method of partial discharge measurement for mold transformer. As we reviewed on-line test technique, sensor, transducer of pulse signal processing, set-up of test circuit for loading back device and now testing.

  • This study was carried out to investigate vibration shock of electric appliances during transport. Microwave oven, TV, washing machine and refrigerator were singled out as the study items. Transport courses were selected as follow ; an expressway between Kumi and Seoul for TV, an expressway between Kwangju and Seoul for microwave oven and washing machine, a national road between Inchon and Seoul for refrigerator. the values of vibration shock were measured to be ${\sim}3G$ on the national road and 1G on the expressway for up and down direction, ${\sim}0.5G$ on the national road and expressway for back and forth direction and ${\sim}0.8G$ on the national road and expressway for right and left direction. There was no damage during transport. These values were corresponding to grade II of KS A 1026 (General Rules of Performance Testing for Packaged Freights).

  • The resistance spot welding process has been extensively used for joining of sheet metals, which are subject to variation of many process variables. Many qualitive analyses of sampled process variables have been attempted to predict nugget size. In this paper, dynamic resistance and electrode movement signal which is a good indicative of the nugget size was examined by introducing an artificial neural network estimator. An artificial neural feedforward network with back-propagation of error was applied for the estimation of the nugget size. The prediction by the neural network is in good agreement with the actual nugget size for resistance spot welding of galvanized steel. The results are quite promising in that the quantitative estimation of the invisible nugget size can be achieved without conventional destructive testing of welds.

  • The application of infrared thermography for detecting defects under the surface of a material was studied. Defects in a specimen were made by back-drilled circular holes. To get alarge temperature difference at the surface, a halogen lamp was used for surface heating. We confirmed that the defect location had a good relationship with the maximum temperature difference. The sizes of the defects could be calculated by means of the FWHM. The value of the FWHM of a temperature difference decreased with time. Therefore in an extremely short time after the heating, the true defect size could be measured.

  • The paper employs a feed forward neural network with back-propagation algorithm for modeling time dependent swell in clays containing carbonate in the presence of sulfuric acid. The oedometer swell percent is estimated at a nominal surcharge pressure of 6.25 kPa to develop 612 data sets for modeling. The input parameters used in the network include time, sulfuric acid concentration, carbonate percentage, and liquid limit. Among the total data sets, 280 (46%) were assigned to training, 175 (29%) for testing and the remaining 157 data sets (25%) were relegated to cross validation. The network was programmed to process this information and predict the percent swell at any time, knowing the variable involved. The study demonstrates that it is possible to develop a general BPNN model that can predict time dependent swell with relatively high accuracy with observed data ($R^2$=0.9986). The obtained results are also compared with generated non-linear regression model.

  • The Fourier transform spectra of a grating have been employed to determine the refractive index of a simple lens. The shearing interferometric technique is used for collimation testing of the expanded laser beam and for determining the exact focal plane. The slit attached to micro X-Y translator has been used to measure the distance between two sucessive diffraction orders in the back focal plane of the test lens. The experimental equipment is described and results are presented.
