  • To compare the treatment effects of back exercise on functional status, spinal mobility, SLR, pain severity, and treatment results satisfaction, and to determine whether spinal exercises during the low back pain reduces recurrent episodes of back pain. 1. Flexion and extension exercise groups did not differ in any outcome over 4weeks. After 1week, both exercise groups had reduced disability score, a higher proportion returning to work, and fewer subjects with a positive SLR compared with the control group. 2. There was no difference among groups regarding recurrence of low back pain after 6~12 months. 3. There was no difference for any outcomes between the flexion or extension groups. However, either exercise was slightly more effective than no exercise when patients with low back pain were treated.

  • Back ferrule is a circular ring shaped metallic object which is used for fastening, joining or reinforcement during the tube fitting as well as to prevent leakage. Therefore, during tube fitting the leading edge of the back ferrule should be sufficiently hard enough to prevent leakage. In our research, we concentrated the improvement of two major factors. Firstly, to improve the surface hardness of the back ferrule made by AISI 316 Stainless Steel. Secondly, the enhancement of corrosion resistance of back ferrule after plasma treatment. Initially, the corrosion resistance and hardness of the back ferrule (both commercial and without treated) was not good enough for tube fitting but after applying plasma treatment with suitable conditions on ferrule, we improved the corrosion resistance and hardness of the back ferrule dramatically.

  • The periodic water-back-flushing using permeate water was performed to minimize membrane fouling and to enhance permeate flux in tubular ceramic ultrafiltration (UF) system for Gongji stream water treatment in Chuncheon city. The filtration time (FT), which was the water-back-flushing period, 2 min with periodic 15 sec water-back-flushing showed the highest value of dimensionless permeate flux ($J/J_o$), and the lowest value of resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$), and we acquired the highest total permeate volume ($V_T$) of 6.35 L. Consequently FT 2 min at back-flushing time (BT) 15 sec could be the optimal condition in advanced UF water treatment of Gongji stream. Then the average rejection rates of pollutants by our tubular ceramic UF system were 99.4% for Turbidity, 31.8% for $COD_{Mn}$, 22.6% for $NH_3$-N and 65.9% for T-P.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of Pharmacopuncture Treatment with Chuna Treatments for Low Back Pain caused by Traffic accidents. Methods : This study was carried out on 81 patients with low back pain caused by Traffic accidents. The patients were divided into 2 group ; The pharmacopuncture(A) group was treated by pharmacopuncture treatment. The chuna(B) group was treated by chuna treatment. We measured Oswestry Disability Index(ODI) and Visual Analog Scale(VAS) on the patients before the treatment and on the 2nd, and 4th weeks after the treatments. Results : After being treated by our methods, the ODI and VAS score's were improved after the 4th weeks treatment in both groups. There is no significant difference on ODI and VAS score after the 4th weeks treatment in both groups. In the early stages(from pre to 2 weeks worth of treatment), Group A showed a decreasing VAS score compared to Group B. In the final stages(from 2 weeks to 4 weeks worth of treatment), Group B showed a higher decreasing amount compared to Group A in VAS score. Conclusions : The results suggest that both pharmacopuncture treatment and chuna treatment is considered to be effective and useful on low back pain caused by traffic accidents. There is no significant difference between pharmacopuncture treatment and chuna treatment for low back pain caused by traffic accidents, however the early stages of treatments(from pre to 2 weeks treatement) show that pharmocopouncture treatment is more effective than chuna treatment for low back pain by traffic accidents. In the final stages(from 2 weeks to 4 weeks treatment), chuna treatment is more effective than pharmacopuncture treatment for low back pain by traffic accident.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the short term effects of the traction and decompression device, which is a newly developed domestic medical device, on pain and functional activity in patients with chronic low back pain with or without radicular pain. Methods: Forty patients with chronic low back pain were included and allocated to decompression (n=20) and traction groups (n=20). They received decompression or traction therapy for 20 minutes a day, 3 days per week for two weeks. For evaluating pain and functional activity, a visual analogue scale (VAS) for low back pain and the Oswestry back pain disability index (ODI) were obtained on pre-treatment, and at 6, 12 and 15 days after treatment. Patients'satisfaction levels were measured 15 days after treatment. Results: VAS was significantly decreased at 12 days and 15 days post-treatment compared to pre-treatment in both groups (p<0.05). ODI was significantly decreased at 12 days and 15 days post-treatment compared to pre-treatment in the decompression group (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in the VAS and ODI scales (p>0.05). Patients' satisfaction levels were significantly higher in the decompression group than in the traction group (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that decompression therapy might be effective for increasing functional activity in patients with low back pain and could provide patients with higher satisfaction than traction therapy. This study provided validity data for the therapeutic effects of the decompression device in patients with low back pain and it will be useful for medical cost development and patient education of this device.

  • Objectives: The Purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of chiropractic treatment and low back exercise on lumbar lordosis angle, gravity line, range of motion, and pain degree of university students who are taking a commuter bus at least 4 hours of round trip. Methods: A group of 15 participants received chiropractic treatment around the lumbar spine region twice per week for 8 weeks. Another group of 15 participants were treated with low back exercise three times per week for 8 weeks. Results: In the present results, both chiropractic treatment and low back exercise did not affect the change of lumbar lordosis. However, chiropractic treatment also significantly improved the range of the lumbar motion, including Flexion, Extension, Right Lateral Flexion and Left Lateral Flexion(p<0.05), and consequently decreased the pain degree. Low back exercise significantly moved the lumbar gravity line to almost normal scale, and improved the range of the lumbar motion, including Flexion, and Right Lateral Flexion (p<0.05), resulting in the reduction of pain degree, although both chiropractic treatment and exercise treatment did not change the lumbar lordosis angle at the statistically significant. Conclusions: From these results, it can be inferred that chiropractic treatment might be beneficial to alleviating the low back pain of the university students using a commuter bus by improving the range of lumbar motion or stabilizing the lumbar gravity line.
