The fifty-year history of dental hygiene education in South Korea

  • The aim of this study was to review the history of dental hygiene education in Korea on its $50^{th}$ anniversary in 2015. Internal resources and documents from the Korean Dental Hygienists' Association and other accessible resources were examined to verify the historical facts of dental hygiene education in Korea. From 1965 to 1967, the first class of four dental hygiene students graduated, and the legal basis for dental hygiene as a profession was established, which led to the start of the profession Registered Dental Hygienist in 1971. From 1977 to 1993, 13 higher educational institutions started dental hygiene programs. The Korean Dental Hygienists' Association (1977) and Korean Association of Dental Hygiene College Professors (1987) were established in this period. From 1994 to 2006, the duration of major-intensive course programs in dental hygiene was extended to three from the two years of 1994, and the first bachelor's degree program in dental hygiene started in 2002. In this period, studies on dental hygiene became significantly active owing to vigorous activities by academic societies. The master's degree program in dental hygiene was established in 2007. Academic dental hygiene journals, the Journal of Dental Hygiene Science, and Journal of Korean Academy of Dental Hygiene Education were promoted as the registered journals of the Korean Research Foundation. From 1965 to 2015, dental hygiene education in South Korea expanded both quantitatively and qualitatively and is now ready for further progress in the future.

COVID-19 백신접종 시작 단계에서 간호사의 백신접종 수용도와 관련 요인 (Nurses' vaccination acceptance and related factors in the initial stage of COVID-19 vaccination in Korea: a cross-sectional study)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors associated with nurses' vaccination acceptance in the initial stage of coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination in Korea. Methods: This cross-sectional study collected data from hospital-level or higher medical institutions from May 5 to May 7, 2021 with a total of 368 nurses via an online survey. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with vaccination acceptance. Results: The acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination had an average score of 4.28 ± 0.80 out of 7 points. Among the sub-areas of acceptance, the safety of the vaccine exhibited the lowest score (average, 2.80 ± 0.83). The factors related to COVID-19 vaccination acceptance in nurses were age (over 40 compared to under 29) (β = .16, p = .008), experience (more than 11 years compared to under 5) (β = .16, p = .010), the absence of a preferred vaccine (β = -.14, p = .004), and educational background (a master's degree or higher compared to a bachelor's degree or lower) (β = .12, p = .042). Conclusion: In the initial stage of COVID-19 vaccination, nurses believed that the COVID-19 vaccine was important and that people should be vaccinated, but had concerns regarding the safety of the vaccine. Older age, more experience, the absence of a preferred vaccine, and a higher educational background were associated with higher acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination. Therefore, more active education on the necessity and value of vaccination for young people is required at the individual and socio-cultural level, and a sufficient supply of preferred vaccines at the national level is needed.

프랑스 교원양성제도 개편에 관한 연구 : ESPE를 중심으로 (Study on Reorganization of French Teacher Training System: Focusing on ESPE)

  • 본 연구는 프랑스 교육개혁의 흐름에 따라 2013년에 도입된 ESPE를 중심으로, 프랑스 교원정책의 개편의 방향을 다각적으로 분석하여 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 프랑스 교원양성제도의 주요변화과정을 살펴보면, 최근 25년간 3차례에 걸쳐 개편이 진행되었는데, 1991년에 도입된 IUFM에서부터, 2009년를 거쳐, 2013년에 새로운 교원양성기관인 ESPE가 도입되어 시행중이다. ESPE는 교사양성(유치원에서 대학까지)뿐 아니라 교육전문가를 양성하기 위한 독립적 전문교원양성교육기관으로, 이전 제도의 장점은 최대한 살려 모두 계승하고, 단점은 보완하고자 한 점에서 ESPE에 대한 이해는 프랑스 교원정책의 개혁의 방향을 볼 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. 연구결과 프랑스 교원정책의 최근 25년간 주요개편방향을 살펴보면, 첫째, 교원양성교육을 석사학위과정과 연계하여 연구하는 교사로서의 위상을 강화한 점이다. 둘째, 교원양성교육에서 이론교육과 현장실습교육의 균형을 추구한 점이다. 셋째, 교원양성교육의 자격기준이 다양해지고, 석사학위에서 학사학위로 하향화 한 점이다. 넷째, 교원양성교육과 교원임용시험 및 교직석사학위취득, 교사자격증 취득은 연계되어 있다는 점이다. 다섯째, 교원양성교육이 교사뿐 아니라 교육전문가 양성의 두 가지 측면에서 이루어진다는 점이다. 결론적으로 프랑스 교원정책은 연구하는 교사로서의 위상정립과 교원의 질적 향상을 통해 궁극적으로 교육의 질을 높여가겠다는 개혁의 의지를 엿볼 수 있다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 크다.

일개 간호대학생의 학습유형과 자기주도적 학습 (Learning Style and Self-directed Learning of Nursing Students at One University)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the preferences for learning style and the degree of self-directed learning and influencing factors on it among nursing students working on a Bachelor of Science in a nursing program at Suwon. Methods: The study sample included 156 nursing students. A self-report questionnaire was used to assess the data. The data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN program for descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Most of the students preferred lectures rather than discussion or team projects as a teaching method. Students preferred deliberating, sensing, and the use of visuals for their learning style. In addition, they favored sequential learning over comprehensive learning. Self directed learning had better outcomes in 3rd and 4th year students than 1st or 2nd year students. Additionally, active learners and high achievers who had a good GPA showed higher self directed learning than the others. Conclusion: In order to maximize students' self-directed learning, study guidance will be necessary for freshmen and for some who experience difficulties in studying nursing courses. Nursing faculty members should pay close attention to facilitate student's self directed learning, and encourage more discussions in the classes.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system, required for accreditation of nursing education. Methods: A methodological design was used. To ensure the theoretical validity of the evaluation system, learning objectives for nursing education programs and job descriptions for nurses in Korea were verified by analyzing the relationships in the five attributes of the nursing leadership concept. The nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system was developed based on the Kim & Park's developmental model (2008). Results: The nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system was established, including implementation level, education curriculum, level of performance, evaluation method, rubrics, and Close-the-Loop. Conclusion: The developed evaluation system can be actively used in nursing education, and contribute to enhancing the leadership competencies of nursing students and graduate nurses.

Breast Mass Classification using the Fundamental Deep Learning Approach: To build the optimal model applying various methods that influence the performance of CNN

  • Deep learning enables machines to have perception and can potentially outperform humans in the medical field. It can save a lot of time and reduce human error by detecting certain patterns from medical images without being trained. The main goal of this paper is to build the optimal model for breast mass classification by applying various methods that influence the performance of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Google's newly developed software library Tensorflow was used to build CNN and the mammogram dataset used in this study was obtained from 340 breast cancer cases. The best classification performance we achieved was an accuracy of 0.887, sensitivity of 0.903, and specificity of 0.869 for normal tissue versus malignant mass classification with augmented data, more convolutional filters, and ADAM optimizer. A limitation of this method, however, was that it only considered malignant masses which are relatively easier to classify than benign masses. Therefore, further studies are required in order to properly classify any given data for medical uses.

조기진통 임부의 조산 발생 영향요인: 전향적 코호트 연구 (Risk Factors for Premature Birth among Premature Obstetric Labor Women: A Prospective Cohort Study)

  • Purpose: To identify risk factors for premature birth among premature obstetric labor women. Methods: Participants were 129 hospitalized women who were diagnosed with potential premature obstetric labor with 20 weeks to 37 weeks of gestation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test, t-test, and binary logistic regression. Results: Of 129 women, 78(60.5%) gave premature birth and 51 (39.5%) gave full-term birth. Risk factors for premature birth were education level (${\leq}$bachelor's degree), abnormal bowel condition (constipation or diarrhea), time firstly diagnosed with a premature obstetric labor (below 28 weeks of pregnancy), and multiple pregnancy. There were also increased risks of premature birth for participants with high level of anxiety and high level of prenatal stress. In social support, there was an increased risk of premature birth for participants with low level of social support. Conclusion: Prenatal nursing programs should consider not only psychosocial factors such as anxiety, prenatal stress, and social support, but also some general and obstetric factors such as education level, abnormal bowel condition, time firstly diagnosed with a premature obstetric labor, and multiple pregnancy to increase maternal and child health.

보험심사간호사의 VDT 증후군 증상에 관한 연구 (A Study on Symptoms of VDT Syndrome among Health Insurance Review Nurses)

  • Purpose: The present study examines symptoms of VDT syndrome perceived by those nurses reviewing the application of health insurance at hospitals. This study also investigates those factor influencing on the experience of VDT syndrome among those nurses. Method: Data were collected through mail questionnaire survey in April, 2003. Of the 250 questionnaires disseminated, 214 questionnaires were finally analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis through SPSS/PC version 10.0. Result: Of the VDT syndrome, the musculoskeletal symptom score was highest, followed by ophthalmologic symptoms. The musculoskeletal symptoms were higher among younger nurses, having smaller space under the desk, and feeling uncomfortableness of the chair. The ophthalmologic symptoms were higher among those with a bachelor's degree, younger nurses, and those having a light reflection on the computer monitor, and those maintaining less than 40cm between eyes and the monitor. Higher dermatologic symptoms were observed among younger nurses and those using unclear monitor. The psychological symptoms were higher among younger nurses, those having a light reflection on the monitor, those unable to control the height of their chair, and those using uncomfortable chair. The overall symptoms were higher among younger nurses, those having a light reflection on the monitor, and those smaller space under the desk. Conclusion: Primary intervention should be given to those nurses with symptoms of VDT syndrome in order to regain health and prevent further aggravation of the symptoms. In particular, self-care behaviors of the nurses using VDT should be promoted with administrative support.

암환자를 돌보는 간호사의 접촉 관련 중재에 대한 인식 (Perception of Touch Therapies Among Nurses Who Take Care of Cancer Patients)

  • Purpose: The objectives of this study were to investigate perception of touch therapies among nurses who looking after cancer patients, ultimately to probe possibility of utilization of touch therapies as nursing interventions. Method: A descriptive study conducted from Dec. 2005 to Jan. 2006. 270 nurses taking care of cancer patients in 2 urban hospital were completed self-report questionnaire about general characteristics, utilization of touch therapies, willingness to adopt touch therapies in their practice, and perception of safety and effectiveness of touch therapies. Result: The participants were average 27.97 year-old, 60% of them had bachelor's degree, most of them were staff nurses(83.0%), and 34.6% of them were 3-5 years experienced in oncology nursing. Among 5 touch therapies(therapeutic touch, massage, reflexology, acupressure, and acupuncture), massage was the most positively perceived therapy not only the aspects of safety(67.1%) and effectiveness(65.9%), but also willingness to utilize in their practice(71.2%). There was no significant difference in willingness to utilize in their practice per age and years of working in oncology nursing. Older and more experienced groups perceived more positively to massage and reflexology. Conclusion: Massage might be readily adopted as a nursing intervention in oncology nursing practice. Strategies to encourage the utilization of touch therapies as nursing intervention should be established.

물리치료사 전문화 제도 기준에 대한 인식 (Awareness of the Guidelines for Institutionalization of Physical Therapist Specialization)

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the level of awareness of the guidelines of the physical therapist specialization system. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional survey of 364 clinical physical therapists working in hospitals. A structured questionnaire consisting of 17 questions was used. The questionnaire consisted of standards and management for the institutionalization of physical therapist specialization, intentions to acquire specialized physical therapist qualifications, specialized fields, and general information of the research subjects. RESULTS: At least five years of clinical experience and a bachelor's degree or higher were required to obtain a specialized physical therapist qualification. Many physical therapists said they would accept the qualification of a specialized physical therapist. Training and examination were appropriate for acquiring specialized physical therapist qualifications, and it was desirable to manage qualifications at the national level or the association of physical therapists. As for the specialized fields of physical therapy, musculoskeletal physical therapy, pediatric physical therapy, and nervous system physical therapy were prioritized, and electrotherapy was not recognized as a specialized field. CONCLUSION: A detailed discussion is needed on the system and cost for acquiring a specialized physical therapist qualification and economic benefits after acquiring the qualification.
