  • Korean firms are faced with the necessity of creating new markets in 21st century. Korean economy has witnessed the accelerated growth rate of trade volume during the period from the latter part of 20th century to the early part of 21st century. In recent times, Korean export volumes have been stagnated. For the second take off, Korea has to create a new ASEAN BOP market. In order to penetrate into the ASEAN BOP Market, it is necessary for exporting firms to have a partnership with ASEAN countries via ODA. In particular, Public-Private Partnership(PPP) might be seen as an effective tool to access the BOP market in ASEAN region. The international development cooperation based on PPP will establish the humanitarian values as well as economic values through the combined effort of government and business enterprises. This study suggests four kinds of business model to have a mutual cooperation between Korean firms and ASEAN markets.

Recently, social innovation is emerging as strategy for solving social problems around the world. Social innovation means more effective, sustainable and new solutions that increase total values of society. This study attempts to introduce microworks of the Samasource as a case of the business-community innovation model using IT. Samasource is one of three social ventures under the nonprofit organization Sama Group established in 2008. Its mission is to alleviate worldwide poverty by connecting unemployed people in impoverished countries to digital work. Based on the internet model "microwork", they split huge digital projects into small scales, and deliver them to BOP(Bottom Of Pyramid) groups through the internet. This case describes a business model, revenue model, and impact of Samasource's Microwork. Implications of the case were suggested in the conclusion. To this end, I would like to provide a meaningful implication to researchers and founders of the South Korea.

  • When it comes to current balance, both of Korea and China enjoy the trade surplus in goods while both countries suffer trade deficit in service. This facts demonstrate that two countries have comparative disadvantages in service industry. In order to identify the international competitiveness of trade in service between Korea and China, several indexes such as TSI, RSCA and IMS was calculated, using the IMF's balance of payments (BOP) statistics as proxy. The results of this analysis are as follows. Korea has a comparative advantage in four sectors (Transportation services, Financial services, Royalties & license fees and Personal cultural recreation), while China has a comparative advantage in five sectors (Travel, Communication services, Insurance services, Computer & information services and Other Business services). Construction services are indeterminate. However, the competitiveness of the two sectors-communication and computer & information-which China has a comparative advantage will be transferred to Korea if some effort to reinforce the competitiveness is added because the gap is being narrowed.

  • Among several macroeconomic missteps blamed for the recent global financial crisis including the social problems of income distribution and the lack of proper financial remedies, two of them have received particular attention: the global BOP(Balance of Payment) imbalance and the misguided monetary policy. Such BOP imbalance was blamed for massive foreign exchange investment flows from Asia into the U.S., triggering the financial and real estate bubble in America. The latter refers to the excessively loose monetary policy of the U.S. Federal Reserve, which pushed financial institutions and households into reckless investment behavior in search of higher returns. Given the abuse of certain innovative financial techniques and new investment instruments that have been created in recent decades, both collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) and credit default swaps (CDS) enjoyed a symbiotic and toxic relationship prior to the financial crisis This paper is organized as follows: The first section analyzes the real causes of the recent financial crisis. The second details the role of CDOs and CDS. Then, to identify key determinants of the CDS spreads in an emerging capital market, the sample data of major Korean firms' CDS spreads are used to estimate the risk premium by utilizing the multiple regression analysis. The empirical test result indicates that Korean 3-year treasury bond rate(TYIELD), market to book value ratio(MV/BV), and assets size(INASSETS) are shown to demonstrate statistically significant influences on the changes of the CDS premium for sample firms.
