  • For the study of hydrogen bonding phenomenon of high energetic compounds, we have been carried out a theoretical calculations for the nitromethane with the program Gaussian-98. The calculations at levels of restricted BLYP/6-311++G(d,p), B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and MP2/6-311++G have been performed to obtain molecular structures, hydrogen bonding effects and vibrational spectra of nitromethane monomer and dimer. The results show nitromethane is favored to make two hydrogen bonds between molecules and the nitromethane dimer is more stable than the monomer about 15.2, 19.4 and 32.6 kJ/mol for the BLYP, B3LYP, and MP2 level calculations, respectively.

  • The molecular structures of thiacalix[4]biscrown-5 (1) and p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]biscrown-5 (2) and their alkali-metal-ion complexes were optimized using the DFT BLYP/6-31G(d) and mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) (hybrid HF-DF) calculations. The total electronic energies, the normal vibrational modes, and the Gibbs free energies of the mono- and di-topic complexes of each host with the sodium and potassium ions were analyzed. The $K^+$-complexes exhibited relatively stronger binding efficiencies than $Na^+$-complexes for both the monoand di-topic complexes of 1 and 2 comparing the efficiencies of the sodium and potassium complexes with an anisole and phenol. The mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) calculated distances between the oxygen atoms and the alkali metal ions were reported in the alkali-metal-ion complexes ($1{\cdot}Na^+$, $1{\cdot}2Na^+$, $1{\cdot}K^+$, $1{\cdot}2K^+$, $2{\cdot}Na^+$, $2{\cdot}Na^+$, $2{\cdot}K^+$, $2{\cdot}2K^+$). The BLYP/6-31G(d) calculated IR spectra of the host 1 and its mono-topic alkali-metal-ion complexes are compared.

  • The structures of the conformers for 1,3-di-t-butyl-2,4-dinitro-tetramethoxysulfonylcalix[4]arene (1) and 1,2-di-t-butyl-3,4-dinitro-tetramethoxysulfonylcalix[4]arene (2) were optimized using DFT BLYP and mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) (hybrid HF-DF) calculation methods. We have analyzed the total electronic and Gibbs free energies and the differences between the various conformations (cone, partial-cone (PC), 1,2-alternate, and 1,3-alternate) of 1 and 2. For both compounds, the 1,3-alternate (1,3-A) conformers were calculated to be the most stable, which correlate very well with the experimental results. The orderings of the relative stability of 1 and 2 that resulted from the mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) calculations are the following: 1: 1,3-A (syn) > PC (syn) > PC (anti) > 1,2-A (anti) > CONE (syn); 2: 1,3-A (anti) > PC (anti) > PC (syn) > 1,2-A (anti) > 1,2-A (syn) > CONE (syn). The BLYP/6-31G(d) calculated IR spectra of the most stable 1,3-A conformers of 1 and 2 are compared.

  • Molecular structures of the various conformers for the four stereoisomers of tetra-t-butyl-tetra-O-methylsulfinylcalix[4]arene (1) were optimized using DFT BLYP and mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) (hybrid HF-DF) calculation methods. We have analyzed the total electronic and Gibbs free energies and normal vibrational frequencies of 16 different structures from four major conformations (cone (CONE), partial cone (PC), 1,2-alternate (1,2-A), 1,3-alternate (1,3-A)) of the four stereoisomers [1(rccc), 1(rcct), 1(rctt), 1(rtct)]. The mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) calculations suggested that the $1(rccc)_{CONE}$, $1(rcct)_{PC}$, $1(rctt)_{PC}$, and $1(rtct)_{1,3-A}$ were the most stable conformations of the respective stereoisomers. These outcomes are in accordance with the experimental structures obtained from X-ray crystallography. The electrostatic repulsion between the sulfinyl and methoxy groups is a primary factor for the relative stabilities of the four different conformations. The IR spectra of the most stable conformers [$1(rccc)_{CONE}$, $1(rcct)_{PC}$, $1(rctt)_{PC}$, $1(rtct)_{1,3-A}$] of each stereoisomer were compared to each other.

  • As an aid towards improving the treatment of exchange and correlation effects in electronic structure calculations, it is desirable to have a clear picture of concepts of exchange-correlation functionals in computational calculations. For achieving this aim, it is necessary to perform different theoretical methods for many groups of materials. We have performed hybrid density functional theory (DFT) methods to investigate the density charges of atoms in rings and cages of carbon nanotube. DFT methods are engaged and compared their results. We have also been inclined to see the impression of exchange and correlation on nuclearnuclear energy and electron-nuclear energy and kinetic energy. With due attention to existence methods, B3P86, B3PW91, B1B96, BLYP and B3LYP have used in this work.

  • Density functional theory calculations are reported for the carbon clusters bonded with two oxygen atoms $OC_No$ (n=2-6). The structures, vibrational frequencies and dipole moments are computed by BLYP theory with the 6-311G* basis set. Good agreement is obtained between the computed and experimentally observed properties. The ground states of these molecules are shown to be linear. Cyclic structures with higher energy are also predicted.

  • The IR spectra of gaseous phenanthrene, phenathrenols, phenanthrenyl radicals, and hydroxylphenanthrene radicals have been obtained using the BLYP/6-311++G(d,p) method. A comparison of these spectra shows that the measurements of IR spectra can be valuable to identify the reaction pathway(s) of the phenanthrene decomposition reaction by ${\cdot}OH$. We have found that the H atom abstraction reaction process can be easily identifiable from the $650-850cm^{-1}$ (CH out-of-plane bending) region and the ${\cdot}OH$ addition reaction process from the CH stretching and bending modes region of IR spectra. In addition, the calculated IR spectra of all five phenanthren-n-ols (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 9) have also given in this work.

  • Density functional theory calculations are presented for dicyanoacetylene $N{\equiv}C-C{\equiv}C-C{\equiv}N$ and its geometrical isomers. The structures and harmonic frequencies are computed by the BLYP theory employing the 6-311G^{\ast}$ basis set. A variety of isomers are predicted, and the relative energies are compared to estimate their thermodynamic stability.

  • The predictions of the radical reaction sites for phenol, 2-, 3- and 4-chlorophenols (CPs) and 4-chloronitrobenzene (CNB) were studied by atomic charge distribution calculations. The atomic charge distributions on each atom of these molecules were obtained using the CHelpG and MK (Merz-Kollman/Singh) methods with the optimized structural parameters determined by DFT calculation at the level of BLYP/6-311++G(d,p). By comparing the experimentally obtained hydroxyl addition site(s) and the calculated atomic charges on carbon atoms of phenol and CPs, we found that hydroxyl substitution by oxidation reaction mainly occurred to the carbon(s) with high atomic charges. With these results, we were easily able to predict the position(s) of the ·OH reaction site(s) of phenol, CPs and CNB through atomic charge distribution calculations.
