Endurance Evaluation and Fatigue Property fo Axle Housing (Axle Housing의 내구성 판단과 피로특성)

  • Fatigue failure of axle housing could cause many injuries and much financial loss. This challenges the engineer to improve design decisions involving fatigue. Endurance evaluation of axle housing is great interest to auto-mobile manufacturers for the sake of safety and reliability. Axle housing is subjected to gross vehicle weight(G.V.W)as mean load and alternating load. Theoretical design diagram involving mean and alternating stresses is used for the evaluation of axle housing fatigue endurance with the equivalent stress of fatigue critical area on the axle housing. Four point bending fatigue tests on axle housing with constant amplitude loading at approximately R=0 were performed with 50 ton servohydraulic strucural fatigue testing machine developed at KIMM. Specimens were made with the same material STKM 13B as the axle housing and tested to obtain S_N data. Five specimens of STKM 13B were tested at 253.61 MPa and weibull distribution was obtained at the same stress level. Material data and structural data were compares and fatigue stress property factor and fatigue life property factor were obtained.

Die System for Avoiding Thickness Reduction along the Bent Corner in Warm Plate Forging of an Axle Housing (액슬하우징의 온간 후판단조에서 굽힘 변형된 모서리에서 발생하는 두께 감소 방지를 위하여 고안된 금형 시스템)

  • In this paper, a useful die system for warm plate forging of a large axle housing of heavy-duty trucks is presented. A die system composed of material flow guide pin as well as upper die and lower die is proposed to reduce the inherent thickness reduction along the bent corner of the product which deteriorates structural strength and fatigue life in its service. The role of the pin assembled in the upper die is to prevent formation of sharp corner in early forming stage and to supply material in the lower die cavity sufficient enough to thicken the bent corner at the final stroke. The mechanism of the die system is given and its effect on corner thickness of the product is revealed by two-dimensional finite element analysis under plain strain assumption. Three-dimensional finite element solutions are also given to verify validity of the two dimensional approach and to show the mechanics of the die system in detail. The die system has been successfully applied to manufacturing the axle housing of heavy-duty trucks.

A Process Sequence Design of the Mulit-Step Cold Extrusion using Thick-Wall Pipes (중공축 소재를 이용한 다단계 냉간압출 공정의 설계)

  • The current five-stage cold extrusion process to produce an axle-housing is investigated for the purpose of improved process. The main goal of this study is to obtain an appropriate reduced process sequence which can produce the required part most economically without tensile crack-ing workpiece buckling and overloading of the tools. The current process sequence is simulated and design criteria are examined. during the simulation several remeshings are done due to severe mesh distortions, Based on the results of simulations of the current five-stage process, design strategy for improving the process sequence are developed using the thick hollow pipes. The finished product of an axle-housing is produced in two operations and one annealing treatment while the conventional sequence consists of five operations and one annealing treat-ment. Also die loads of the new process are compared with those of the current one.

  • A manufacturing process for the axle-housing is analyzed by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The process contains five stages for the final product. During the simulation, remeshings are done four times due to severe mesh distributions. FE Analysis is performed mainly for strain distributions and load-stroke relationships. Those results are to be an useful design criteria for designing a new process sequence in future.

  • A noise/vibration of the forklift happens in the driving axle to charge the drive and are examined closely by an each reason. After this study consider a reduction method of a noise/vibration about the gear, axle, bearing and others, the purpose of this study is to reduce a noise/vibration for a stability of the total system. From the data to be measured through all experimental method, the problems of the gear, axle, bearing, housing and others are examined closely, and the forklift is derived the model to be the engineering. The Mechanism of the problem occurrence is examined through a palametric research about an each influence factor. Lastly, the resuls of this study propose the model to he improved.

  • In this study, the improvement work to reduce the steering wheel vibration of a forklift truck is performed. The forklift truck newly developed possesses a trans-axle type power train to achieve a compact and low-price design. The forklift truck is directly subjected to a high-level engine vibration through hard mounted trans-axle housing. The engine vibration shakes the whole system of the forklift truck, and then a high level local vibration of steering wheel could not be avoided. As the results, the vibration source and path mechanisms are experimentally identified and then an improvement design is proposed to minimize the steering wheel vibration.

  • Propeller shaft is one of the main excitation source in the vehicle driveline. This paper presents the correlation of the propeller shaft and axle vibration. 10 D.O.F. lumped mass model is constructed to simulate the dirveline. Experimental apparatus is constructed to verify the simulation model and to measure the vibration signal of lthe driveline. The results of simulation and experiments show that propeller shaft excitation is 2nd harmonic of the rotational frequency. Axle housing vibration signal shows that axle resonate with 2nd harmonic of excitation frequency due to universal joint effect.

  • To predict busting failure in tubular hydroforming, the criteria for ductile fracture proposed by Oyane is combined with the finite element method. From the histories of stress and strain in each element obtained from finite element analysis, the fracture initiation site is predicted by mean of the criterion. The prediction by the ductile fracture criterion is applied to three hydroforming processes such as a tee extrusion, an automobile rear axle housing and lower am. For these products, the ductile fracture integral I is not only affected by the process parameters, but also by preforming processes. All the simulation results show the combination of the finite element analysis and the ductile fracture criteria is useful in the prediction of farming limit in hydroforming processes.

  • The working tactor of this study, an agriculture machine, is consisted of 4 wheel driving system with gear trains and 4-type wheel steering system. Since technological regions for 4 wheel driving system and 4-type wheel steering system are some large, we divide on two studies on 4 wheel driving system and 4-type wheel steering system This study develops transmission and axle that are very important units for strong working operation because the power of tractor is largely affected by transmission and axle. Even if the development of the power train is some common technology, it is very complicated work and needs many experience know-hows. So, for new given specifications fitted to the working tractor, a kind of new agriculture machine, this study haws out processes that are development of assembly drawing and strength analysis through classical method and CAE software for all internal parts and housing cases.
