The present experiment is conducted to investigate heat transfer characteristics on the impinging surface with secondary flows around circular nozzle jets. The changed vortex pattern around jet affects significantly the flow characteristics and heat transfer coefficients on the impinging surface. The effects of the jet vortex control are also considered with jet nozzle-to-plate distances and main jet velocities. The vortex pattern around a jet is changed from a convective instability to an absolute instability with a velocity suction ratio of the main jet and the secondary counterflow. With the absolute instability condition, the jet potential core length increases and the heat transfer on the impinging surface is increased by small scale eddies. The region of high heat transfer coefficients is enlarged with the high Reynolds number due to increasing secondary peak values. The effect of suction flows is influenced largely with collars attached the exit of the jet nozzle because the attached collar guides well the counterflow around the main jet.

The magnetohydrodynamic axisymmetric instability of a streaming gas jet surrounded by bounded fluid with non-uniform field has been developed. The problem is formulated, solved and the boundary conditions are applied across the interfaces. The eigenvalue relation is derived and discussed analytically and the results are confirmed numerically. Some reported works are recovered as limiting cases from the present general results. The streaming has a destabilizing effect for all short and long wavelengths. The capillary force is stabilizing for short wavelengths but it is destabilizing for long wavelengths. The axial magnetic fields interior the gas and fluid media are stabilizing. The transverse field is destabilizing for all wavelengths. The radii ratio of the gas and fluid cylinders plays an important role for stabilizing the model and made it more realistic one than the full liquid jet or/and the ordinary hollow jet. The numerical analysis clarify the stable and unstable domains based on different values of the various parameters of the problem.
Jet cutting technology currently makes use of a generic supersonic gas jet to improve the cutting speed and performance. In order to get a better understanding of the flow characteristics involved in the supersonic jet cutting technology, the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using a fully implicit finite volume method. Computations have been conducted to investigate some major characteristics of supersonic coaxial turbulent jets. An assistant gas jet has been imposed on the primary gas jet to simulate realistic jet cutting circumstance. The pressure and the temperature ratios of the primary and assistant gas jets are altered to investigate the major characteristics of the coaxial jets. The total pressure and Mach number distributions, shock wave systems, and the jet core length which characterize the coaxial jet flows are strongly affected by the pressure ratio, but not significantly dependent on the total temperature ratio. The assistant gas jet greatly affects the basic flow characteristics of the shock system and the core length of under and over-expanded jets.
A computational study is performed to clarify the characteristics of supersonic moist air jet issuing from a simple sonic nozzle. The effects of the initial supersaturation on the Mach disk diameter and location, the barrel shock wave and jet boundary structures are investigated in details. The axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, coupled with droplet growth equation, are solved using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme. It is found that the Mach disk diameter increases with an increase in relative humidity of moist air. while its location is not significantly dependent on the relative humidity. As the relative humidity increases, the barrel shock wave and jet boundary are more expanded due to the local static pressure rise of nonequilibrium condensation.

The dynamic behaviors of the single vortex in a reacting and non-reacting methane-air jet flow were investigated numerically. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector for low Mach number flow A two-step global reaction mechanism was adopted as a combustion model. After fuel and air were developed entirely in computational domain, the single vortex was generated by an axisymmetric jet that was impulsed to emit a cold fuel. Through comparisons of single vortex in reacting and non-reacting jet flow, it was found that global dynamic behaviors and the mechanisms leading to the formation, transport processes of vortex ring were influenced significantly by heat release from reaction. In addition, the interaction between a single vortex and flame bulge generated by buoyance effect in a reacting jet flow was found.
A 2-dimensional temperature field measurement technique using PLIF (Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) was developed and it was applied to an axisymmetric buoyant jet. Rhodamine B was used as a fluorescent dye. Laser light sheet illuminated a two-dimensional cross section of the jet. The intensity variations of LIF signal from Rhodamine B molecules scattered by the laser light were captured with an optical filter and a CCD camera. The spatial variations of temperature field of buoyant jet were derived using the calibration data between the LIF signal and real temperature. The measured results show that the turbulent jet is more efficient in mixing compared to the transition and laminar jet flows. As the initial flow condition varies from laminar to turbulent flow, the entrainment from ambient fluid increases and temperature decay along the jet center axis becomes larger. In addition to the mean temperature field, the spatial distributions of temperature fluctuations were measured by the PLIF technique and the result shows the shear layer development from the jet nozzle exit.
The flow and heat transfer characteristics on the impingement surface can be controlled by the change of vortex with the acoustic excitation, because the flow characteristics of an impinging jet are affected strongly by the vortices formed at the jet exit. To investigate the effects of acoustic excitation, we measured the velocity, turbulent intensity distributions for the free jet and local heat transfer coefficients on a impingement surface. As the acoustic excitation, subharmonic frequency of excited frequency plays an important role to the control of the jet flow. If the vortex pairings are promoted by the acoustic excitation, turbulence intensity of the jet flow is increased quickly. On the other hand if the vortex pairings are suppressed, the jet flow has low turbulence intensity at the center of the jet. Therefore, the low heat transfer rates are obtained on the impingement plate for a small nozzle-to-plate distance. However, it has high heat transfer rates at a large distance between the nozzle and plate due to the increasing of potential-core length.
A conceptual simplified model of Hartmann-Sprenger tube is suggested and investigated to decouple the regurgitant mode in the present paper. In spite of high nonlinearity, the acoustic behavior of this resonant tube system is dependent on wavelength and depth of the tube. The effect of forcing frequency and tube geometry on jet regurgitant mode are studied and discussed. With a conventional axisymmetric Euler code, sensitive acoustic problems are solved and validated by comparison with analytic theories.
