  • Air-cored superconducting synchronous generator(ASSG) is characterized by an air-cored machine with its rotor iron and stator iron teeth removed. For this reason, in the case of the shape optimum design of ASSG, other design variables different from an iron-cored machine should be considered, which will lead to substantial improvement on the performance. The major design variables that are considered by using Three-dimensional Finite element Method(3D FEM) in this paper are : 1) field coil width, 2) axial length of magnetic shield, and 3) armature winding method. End-ring of armature winding is considered in the calculation of EMF. When it comes to field coil width, as field coil width enlarges, its effective field increases but the maximum field on the superconductor decreases. this determines the critical current density. this study presents an effective field coil width, axial length of magnetic shield, and armature winding method, and also the analysis is verified by the experimental results.

  • The effects of loss of torque on magnetic fluid seals with rotating-shafts and the general difficulty of studying magnetic fluid seals are the focus of this work. The mechanism underlying loss of torque on such seals is analyzed using theoretical methods that show that loss of torque can be affected by several factors, including the velocity of the rotating-shaft, the structure of the sealing device, the characteristics of the magnetic field, and the characteristics of the magnetic fluid. In this paper, a model of the loss of torque is established, and the results of finite element analysis and testing and simulations are analyzed. It is concluded that (i) the viscosity of the magnetic fluid increased with the intensity of the magnetic field within a certain range; (ii) when the magnetic fluid was saturated, the increase in loss of torque tended to gradually slow down; and (iii) although the axial active length of the magnetic fluid may decrease with increasing speed of the rotating-shaft, the loss of torque increased because of increasing friction.

  • Herein, the closed-form expressions of the magnetic field due to an axially symmetric body such as a right cylinder, are derived. The magnetic field due to a right cylinder is converted from the gravity gradient tensor using Poisson's relation; the magnetic field induced by a constant magnetization can be obtained from the gravity gradient tensor with a constant density. Because of the axial symmetry of the cylinder, the expressions of gravity gradient tensor are derived in cylindrical coordinate and then transformed into Cartesian coordinates for the three components of the magnetic field using an arbitrary magnetization direction.

  • It is important to control the electron energy distribution to have high quality plasma process. A conventional inductively coupled plasma(ICP) source with 13.56MHz power is not adequate for low damage sub-half micron patterning process due to higher electron temperature. Only the pulsed plasma technique seems to provide low electron temperature, and thus low process damage. Recently, a novel method proposed by us, named as ‘Enhanced-ICP’, which uses periodic weak axial magnetic field added to a normal ICP source, has shown great improvement in etch characteristics. changes of plasma characteristics according to the frequency of time-varying axial magnetic field have been observed by probe-time-averaged Langmuir probe.

  • In this paper, a stator-separated axial flux-switching hybrid excitation synchronous machine (SSAFHESM) is presented, of which the structure and operational principle are introduced. The magnetic field distribution under different excited currents is analyzed, and some characteristics including flux-linkage, EMF and field control ability are studied by finite element analysis (FEA). Tests are carried out on a 12/10-pole prototype machine to validate the analysis results, and an excellent agreement is obtained.

  • AC Superconducting Generators (ACSG) are featured by 3D magnetic flux distribution, which decreases in the direction of axis. For this reason, when ACSG is optimal designed, 3D magnetic field analysis is required. This paper proposes 2D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results normalized by 3D FEA according to the position of armature coil and the ratio of field coil width to axial length in order to reduce the analysis time. By using the proposed data, the reasonable 3D FEA results of ACSG can be only predicted by 2D FEA results. The validity of the 3D FEA results is verified by comparison with the experimental results of 30kVA superconducting synchronous generator.

  • Measurement of magnetic signals generated from electric activity of myocardium provides useful information for the functional diagnosis of heart diseases. Key technical component of the magnetocardiography (MCG) technology is SQUID. To measure MCG signals with high signal-to-noise ratio, sensitive SQUID magnetic field sensors are needed. Present magnetic field sensors based on Nb SQUIDs have field sensitivity good enough to measure most of MCG signals. However, for accurate measurement of fine signal pattern or detection of local atrial fibrillation signals, we may need higher field sensitivity. In addition to field sensitivity, economic aspect of the SQUID system is also important. To simplify the SQUID readout electronics, the output voltage or flux-to-voltage transfer of SQUID should be large enough so that direct measurement of SQUID output can be done using room-temperature preamplifiers. Double relaxation oscillation SQUID (DROS), having about 10 times larger flux-to-voltage transfers than those of DC-SQUIDs, was shown to be a good choice to make the electronics compact. For effective cancellation of external noise inside a thin economic shielded room, first-order axial gradiometer with high balance, simple structure and long-baseline is needed. We developed a technology to make the axial gradiometer compact using direct bonding of superconductive wires between pickup coil and input coil. Conventional insert has mechanical support to hold the gradiometer array, and the dewar neck has equal diameter with the dewar bottom. Boiling of the liquid He can generate mechanical vibrations in the gradiometer array due to mechanical connection structure. Elimination of the mechanical support, and direct mounting of the gradiometer array into the dewar bottom can reduce the dewar neck diameter, resulting in the reduction of liquid He consumption.

  • This paper presents an eddy current loss analysis of a Mechanical Fixation (MF) made of 6061 aluminum alloy, which is used for an NS type double-rotor single-stator axial flux permanent magnet machine. The prototype MF made of aluminum alloy shows good mechanical performance, but poor electro-magnetic performance, since the machine's efficiency can decrease because of eddy current loss in the MF. In order to prevent efficiency decrease, a modification of the MF structure is also introduced. Three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is used for magnetic field analysis, and eddy current losses are computed. The analysis results are compared to, and verified by the test results.

  • The effects of the magnetic field and gas pressure on the etching characteristics were investigated in the axial magnetic field enhanced RIE system. This system has many advantages compared with the conventional RIE system ; the capability of operating at low pressure, low self-bias voltage, high electron density and high etch rate in the low pressure, but also has disadvantages such as the nonconformity of plasma density which intensifies as the magnitude of magnetic field increases. To overcome this problem we made some grooved anode and tried to find the optimal pressure and B-field strength.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic stability of nanocomposite pipes conveying pulsating ferrofluid. The pipe is reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) where the agglomeration of CNTs are considered based on Mori-Tanaka model. Due to the existence of CNTs and ferrofluid flow, the structure and fluid are subjected to axial magnetic field. Based on Navier-Stokes equation and considering the body forced induced by magnetic field, the external force of fluid to the pipe is derived. For mathematical modeling of the pipe, the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used where the energy method and Hamilton's principle are used for obtaining the motion equations. Using harmonic differential quadrature method (HDQM) and Bolotin's method, the motion equations are solved for calculating the excitation frequency and dynamic instability region (DIR) of the structure. The influences of different parameters such as volume fraction and agglomeration of CNTs, magnetic field, structural damping, viscoelastic medium, fluid velocity and boundary conditions are shown on the DIR of the structure. Results show that with considering agglomeration of CNTs, the DIR shifts to the lower excitation frequencies. In addition, the DIR of the structure will be happened at higher excitation frequencies with increasing the magnetic field.
