  • This paper deals with torque analysis of axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) type eddy current brake (ECB) based on analytical field computation. On the basis of a magnetic vector potential and a two-dimensional (2-D) polar coordinate system, analytical solutions for normal and tangential flux density due to permanent magnet (PM) considering eddy current effect are obtained. And then, using derived analytical field solutions, braking torque and normal force characteristics according to rotor speed are also predicted. A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) analysis is employed to confirm the validity of analyses.

  • Cogging torque, the primary ripple component in the torque generated by permanent magnet (PM) motors, is due to the slotting on the stator or rotor. This article shows the reduction of cogging torque in a novel axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor through the various design schemes. 3D finite element method is used for the exact magnetic field analysis. The effects of slot shapes and skewing of slot on the cogging torque and the average torque have been investigated in detail.

  • In this study, we fabricated Bi-2223/Ag high temperature superconducting tapes using PIT (Powder-In-Tube) process to apply the superconducting magnet, cable and etc. It's inevitable to deform the superconducting tapes with axial strain for application. Therefore, for the characterization of the strain sensitivity of the superconducting properties, the degradation of Bi-2223/Ag tapes due to axial strain were investigated by measuring the critical current as a function of applied tension strain and external magnetic field. The critical current of Bi-2223/Ag tapes were decreased slightly up to 0.3∼0.4% applied strain but, drastically decreased more than these strains. Superconducting filament cores consisted of brittle ceramic fibers were broken easily by the large strain and current path were decreased simultaneously.

  • The closed-form expressions of gravity, magnetic, gravity gradient tensor, and magnetic gradient tensor due to a rectangular prism are derived. The vertical gravity is derived via triple integration of a rectangular prism in Cartesian coordinates, and the two horizontal components of vector gravity are then derived via cycle permutation of the axis variables of vertical gravity through the axial symmetry of the rectangular prism. The gravity gradient tensor is obtained by differentiating the vector gravity with respect to each coordinate. Using Poisson's relation, a vector magnetic field with constant magnetic direction can be obtained from the gravity gradient tensor. Finally, the magnetic gradient tensor is derived by differentiating the vector magnetic with respect to appropriate coordinates.

  • This paper proposes the improvement of the etch rate of GaN using a magnetized inductively coupled $CH_4/H_2/Ar$plasma. The gradient magnetic field with the axial direction is investigated using Gauss-meter and the ion current density is measured using double Langmuir probe. The applied magnetic field changes the ion current density profile in the radial direction, resulting in producing the higher density in the outer region than in the center. GaN dry etching process is carried out based on the measurements of the ion current density. The each rate of 2000 /min is achieved with $CH_4/H_2/Ar$ chemistries at 800 W input power, 250W rf bias power, 10 mTorr pressure and 100 gauss magnetic field.

  • This paper demonstrates the use of the convex optimization to localize the transverse magnetic $B_1^+$ field in regions of interest for recently proposed multi-sectioned alternating impedance coils and the traditional transmission line coil. An approach based on different axial slices to identical RF coils except upper stripline structure is investigated. Electromagnetic simulation results are compared for RF coils and discussed in detail at 7.0 T.

  • It has been well known that weak axial magnetic field on the process plasma enhances plasma density. As the magnetic field helps a specific polarized EM wave mode to penetrate into the plasma, the energy transfer to the plasma enhances and the ion density increases. We have analyzed systematic change of the dispersion relation caused by the cyclotron resonance condition. This resonance occurs at near 5 gauss to provide minimum penetration depth, as known before. RF penetration depth increases abruptly beyond the magnetic field of 5 gauss, and this phenomena lessen as the collision frequency increases.

  • We design a crisscrossed double-layer birdcage (DLBC) coil by modifying the coil geometry of a standard single-layer BC (SLBC) coil to enhance the homogeneity of transmitting magnetic flux density ($B_1{^+}$) along the main magnetic field ($B_0$)-direction for small-animal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 300 MHz. The performance assessment of the crisscrossed DLBC coil is conducted by computational analysis with the finite-difference time domain method (FDTD) and compared with SLBC coil in terms of the $B_1$ and the $B_1{^+}$ distribution. As per the computational calculation studies, the mean value in the two-dimensional $B_1{^+}$ map obtained at the mid-axial slice with the proposed DLBC coil is slightly lower than that obtained with the SLBC coil, but the $B_1{^+}$ value of the DLBC coil in the outermost plane (40 mm away from the central plane) shows improvements of 19.3% and 24.8% over the SLBC coil $B_1{^+}$ value when simulating a spherical phantom and realistic mouse body modeling. These simulation results indicate that, the $B_1{^+}$ homogeneity along the z-direction was improved by using DLBC configuration. Our approach enables $B_1{^+}$ homogeneity improvement along the zdirection, and it can also be applied to ultra-high field (UHF) MRI systems.

  • From among the NDT (nondestructive testing) methods, the MFL (magnetic flux leakage) method is specially suitable for testing pipelines because pipeline has high magnetic permeability. The system applied to MFL method is called the MFL PIG. The previous MFL PIG showed high performance in detecting the metal loss and corrosions. However, MFL PIG is highly unlikely to detect the cracks which occur by exterior-interior pressure difference in pipelines and the shape of crack is long and very narrow. In MFL PIG, the magnetic field is performed axially and there is no changes of cross-sectional area at cracks that the magnetic field passes through. Cracks occur frequently in the pipelines and the risk of the accident from the cracks is higher than that from the metal loss and corrosions. Therefore, the new PIG is needed to be researched and developed for detecting the cracks. The circumferential MFL (CMFL) PIG performs magnetic fields circumferentially and can maximize the magnetic flux leakage at the cracks. In this paper, CMFL PIG is designed and the distribution of the magnetic fields is analyzed by using 3 dimensional nonlinear finite element method (FEM). In CMFL PIG, cracks, standards of NACE, are detectable. To estimate the shape of crack, the leakage of magnetic fields for many kinds of cracks is analyzed and the method is developed by signal processing.

  • We have designed a magnetic field gradient useful for cylindrical imaging in NMR-CT. The direc¬tion of the designed field is parallel to the axis and the gradient in the radial direction of cylindrical coordinate is monotonically increasing. The ratio of the gradient in the radial and axial direction is greater than 10 near the center of coordinate. This ratio depends on solenoid length, the number of reverse current turns at center, and the amount of the reverse current. We built a gradient coil based on the numerical simulation and tested the field generated by NMR-CT. The resulting image matches with the theoretical expectation within 10% error. Since the data acquisition time of 1-D imaging is significantly shorter than 2-D imaging, it becomes possible to image much more dynamic objects by the use of this gradient field.
