The effects of non-woven geotextiles on mechanical behavior of sand were investigated. A comprehensive series of triaxial compression tests were performed for these investigation on unreinforced and reinforced sand with geotextiles. The Joomunjin standard sand was used and non-woven geotextiles were included into sand specimen with three layers. The inclusion of non-woven geotextile reinforcement into sand increased the peak strength of sand significantly and the reinforced samples exhibited a greater axial strain at failure. Also the effect on number of reinforcement layers was studied and found as increasing the number of reinforcement layers resulting in more ductility by clogging developed in the shear band within the specimens. It was also found that the tendency of samples to dilate is restricted by non-woven geotextile inclusion. The effect of nunber of reinforcement layer increasing is just same to the effect of decreasing void ratio of sand in this case.
Low cyclic loading tests are conducted on the steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) column-steel (S) beam composite frame joints. This research aims to evaluate the earthquake damage performance of composite frame joints by performing cyclic loading tests on eight specimens. The experimental failure process and failure modes, load-displacement hysteresis curves, characteristic loads and displacements, and ductility of the composite frame joints are presented and analyzed, which shows that the composite frame joints demonstrate good seismic performance. On the basis of this finding, seismic damage performance is examined by using the maximum displacement, energy absorbed in the hysteresis loops and Park-Ang model. However, the result of this analysis is inconsistent with the test failure process. Therefore, this paper proposes a modified Park-Ang seismic damage model that is based on maximum deformation and cumulative energy dissipation, and corrected by combination coefficient ${\alpha}$. Meanwhile, the effects of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement percentage and axial compression ratio on the seismic damage performance are analyzed comprehensively. Moreover, lateral displacement angle is used as the quantification index of the seismic performance level of joints. Considering the experimental study, the seismic performance level of composite frame joints is divided into five classes of normal use, temporary use, repair after use, life safety and collapse prevention. On this basis, the corresponding relationships among seismic damage degrees, seismic performance level and quantitative index are also established in this paper. The conclusions can provide a reference for the seismic performance design of composite frame joints.
Recently, high performance(strength) steels have been utilized to structural materials in buildings and bridges with the demand for high-rise and long-span of main structures. This paper is a series of basic study for the design specification of structural members using high performance steel, material properties of high performance rolled steel building structures. HSA800 was compared with the requirements of Korean Standards(KS) for HSA800. Welded square tube stub columns with variables of width-to-thickness ratios are planned in order to investigate the local buckling behaviors and check the current design limit of width-to-thickness ratio and uniaxial compressive tests are carried out. In addition, the local buckling behaviors of stub columns obtained finite element analysis were compared with those of test results.
Recently, growing interests in frozen ground have stimulated us to advance fundamental theories and systematic researches on soil behavior under freezing conditions. Unlike the well-established soil mechanics theory, temperature variation and phase change of pore-water cause water migration to cold side, ground heaving, sharp increase in earth pressure, etc., which bring about serious problems in frozen geotechnical structures. Elasto-plastic mechanical constitutive model for frozen/unfrozen soil subjected to fully coupled THM phenomena is formulated based on a new stress variable that is continuous in frozen-unfrozen transitional regions. Numerical simulations are conducted to discuss numerical reliability and applicability of the developed constitutive model: one-dimensional heaving pressure, tri-axial compression test, and one-side freezing tests. The numerical results show that developed model can efficiently describe complex THM phenomena of frozen soil, and they can be utilized to analyze and design the geotechnical structures under freezing conditions, and predict their long-term behavior.

Compared with a steel-reinforced section with equal areas of longitudinal reinforcement, a cross section using FRP flexural reinforcement after cracking has a smaller depth to the neutral axis because of the lower axial stiffness. The compression region of the cross section is reduced, and the crack widths are wider. As a result, the shear resistance provided by both aggregate interlock and compressed concrete is smaller. Research on the shear capacity of flexural members without shear reinforcement has indicated that the concrete shear strength is influenced by the stiffness of the flexural reinforcement. In this research, experimental observations were made for the shear strength of FRP reinforced concrete beam and validity of existing predicting equations were examined. Test results showed that shear strength decreased as shear-span increased.

The conventional medium and large caliber gun, in general, utilize the hydro-pneumatic recoil mechanism to control the firing impulse and to return to the battery position. However, this kind of mechanism may cause the problems like the leakages and the property changes in oil and gas due to the temperature variations between low and high temperatures. Accordingly, the friction spring mechanism has recently been researched as an alternative system. The friction spring mechanism consists of a set of closed inner and outer rings with the concentric tapered contact surfaces assembled in the columnar form, and can only be used under the compression load. When the spring column is axially loaded, the tapered surfaces become overlapped, causing the outer rings to expand while the inner rings are being contracted in diameter allowing an axial displacement. Because of friction between tapered contact surfaces, much higher spring stiffness is obtained on the stroke at the increase in load than the stroke at the decrease. In this paper, the dynamic equations regarding the friction spring system and the design approach have been investigated. It is also tried for a dynamic model representing the recoil motion and the friction spring forces. And the model has been proved from firing test using a gun system with friction springs. All the results show that the recoil mechanism using friction springs can substitute for the classic hydro-pneumatic recoil system.

This study proposes a new testing method for shear bearing capacity of FRP-concrete interface, which could well consider a loading condition corresponding to a tunnel lining undergoing axial compression and could be easily carried out with a simply specified specimen. A parametric study is carried out for capturing an optimized condition of coarse-sand coating of FRP, which governs shear bearing capacity of FRP-concrete interface, by using the proposed testing manner in this study. From the parametric study, it is shown that the proposed testing method is reasonably feasible in comparison with the existing testing methods. An optimum condition of coated sand size and sand density is given for the shearing capacity of FRP-concrete interface.

In the present study, a unified viscoplastic-damage model has been applied in order to describe the mechanical characteristics of fresh water ice such as nonlinear material behavior and volume fraction. The strain softening phenomenon of fresh water ice under quasi-static compressive loading has been evaluated based on unified viscoplastic model. The material degradation such as growth of slip/fraction has quite close relation with material inside damage. The volume fraction phenomenon of fresh water ice has been identified based on volume fraction (nucleation and growth of damage) model. The viscoplastic-damage model has been transformed to the fully implicit formulation and the discretized formulation has been implemented to ABAQUS user defined subroutine (User MATerial: UMAT) for the benefit of application of commercial finite element program. The proposed computational analysis method has been compared to uni-axial compression test of fresh water ice in order to validate the compatibilities, clarities and usefulness.

The failure modes of steel column-base plate connection arranged on the basis of AISC Design Guide-#1 and -#10 are base plate tension and compression side flexural yielding, yielding, pull-out and shear failure of anchor rod, concrete crushing in concrete footing and steel column yielding. The bending moment capacity and failure mode in this connection are predicted using limit-state function and we compare these results and test result. In the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thick, bending moment capacity and failure mode in steel column-base plate connection accurately predicted. But in the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thin and axial force do not exist, prediction of failure mode in this connection is somewhat inaccurate.
The Rosette-joining system is a completely new press-joining method for cold-formed steel structures. One Rosette-joint has a shear capacity equal to that of approximately four screws or rivets. The Rosette thin-walled steel truss system presents a new fully integrated prefabricated alternative to light-weight roof truss structures. The trusses are built up on special industrial production lines from modified top hat sections used as top and bottom chords and channel sections used as webs which are joined together with the Rosette press-joining technique to form a completed structure easy to transport and install. A single web section is used when sufficient but can be strengthened by double-nesting two separate sections or by using two lateral profiles where greater compressive axial forces are met. An individual joint in the truss can be strengthened by introducing a hollow bolt into the joint hole. The bolt gives the connection capacity a boost of approximately 20%. A series of laboratory tests have been carried out in order to verify the Rosette truss system in practice. In addition to compression tests on individual sections of different lengths, tests have also been done on small structural assemblies and on actual full-scale trusses of a span of 10 metres. Design calculations have been performed on selected roof truss geometries based on the test results, FE-analysis and on the Eurocode 3 and U.S.(AISI) design codes.
