The main purpose of this paper is to present both the natural frequencies and mode shapes of tapered beams under tensile axial force. The differential equation governing planar free vibration for tapered beams under tensile axial force is derived as nondimensional form. The three kinds of cross sectional shape are considered in differential equation. The Runge-Kutta method and Determinant Search method are used to perform the integration of the differential equation and to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. The hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, clamped-clamped and constraints are applied in numerical examples. The lowest four nondimensional natural frequencies are reported as the function of nondimensional tensile axial force. The fundamental natural frequencies are presented when section ratios and nondimensional axial forces are varied. The effects of cross sectional shapes are reported and some typical mode shapes are also presented.
In the present work, characteristics of an axial flow fan haying distorted inlet flow produced by hub cap are investigated. The distorted inlet flow is generated by the shape of hub cap installed in front of the axial flow fan. Two different cases of hub cap geometry are analyzed to verify the influence of flow distortion. The flow fields are analyzed numerically by solving steady form of three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equation and standard k-$\epsilon$ model is used for a turbulence closure. The results obtained from the numerical simulation are compared to those from experimental measurements. It is found that the overall performance of the axial flow fan is increased by reducing the flow distortion at the hub. Detailed characteristics of the flow fields of two different geometric conditions are also discussed.

The purpose of this study was to compare the v-shape thread with the square shape thread of fixture in the view of stress distribution pattern using finite element stress analysis. The finite element model was designed with the parallel placement of two standard fixtures(4.0 mm diameter ${\times}$ 11.5 mm length) on the region of mandibular 1st and 2nd molars. Three dimensional finite element model was created with the components of the implant and surrounding bone. This study simulated loads of 200 N at the central fossa in a axial direction (load A), 200 N at the buccal offset load that is 2 mm apart from central fossa in a axial direction (load B), 200 N at the buccal offset load that was 4 mm apart from central fossa in a axial direction (load C). These forces of load A',B',C' were applied to a $15^{\circ}$ inward oblique direction at that same site with 200 N. Von Mises stress values were recorded and compared in the supporting bone, fixture, and abutment screw. The following results have been made based on this study : 1. The highest stress concentration occurred at the cervical region of the implant fixture. 2. Von Mises stress value of off-site region was higher than that of central fossa region. 3. Square shape thread type showed more even stress distribution in the vertical and oblique force than V-shape thread type. 4. Stress distribution was the most effective in the case of buccal offset load (2, 4 mm distance from central fossa) in the square shape thread type. 5. V-shape thread type revealed higher von Mises stress value than square shape thread type in all environmental condition. The results from numerical analyses concluded that square shape thread type had the lower destructive stress and more stress distribution between the fixture and bone interface than V-shape thread type. Therefore, square shape thread type was regarded as optimal thread configuration in biomechanical concepts.

An analytical and experimental study of the thermal performance of axial heat pipe with axial groove is conducted to determine the optimal mass of working fluid for the maximum heat transport capacity of heat pipe with axial grooves. Generally, the mass of working fluid has been fully charged by considering only a geometrical shape of axial grooves embedded in a heat pipe. When the heat pipe is operated in a steady state, the meniscus re-cession phenomena of working fluid is occurred in the evaporator region. In this work, the optimal mass of working fluid was obtained from the axial variation of capillary pressure, the radius of curvature and wetting angle of meniscus of liquid-vapor interface. Experimental results were also obtained by varying the mass of working fluid within a heat pipe, and presented for the maximum heat transport capacity corresponding to the operating temperature and the elevation of heat pipe. Finally, the analytical results of the optimal mass of working fluid were compared with those of the experimental mass of working fluid.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of H-shape column base plates subjected to axial loads and moments. In this study, the behavior of H-shape column base plates is investigated using finite element analysis method and an analytical modelingof the base plates is obtained. The variations of six test specimens include ratiosof axial load, sizes of anchor bolts, and thicknesses of base plates. The experimental results are compared with the results from the finite element analyses and those of the analytical modeling. Bearing pressures of base plates from the finite element analyses are compared with those that are assumed in the design of the base plates. From the results of the research, it is observed that the initial stiffness and yield strengths in the analytical study are very similar to the experimental results. And bearing pressures are concentrated under column section with thin base plates.

In this study, the behavior of Steel Plate Concrete (SC) walls subjected to shear and axial forces to investigate the effects of shape and arrangement spacing of studs on the design of SC walls was analytically reviewed. For this purpose, 9 cases of finite element analyses considering the different shape and spacing of studs in SC wall were performed. The results showed that the steel plate was yielded at the lower load than the second yielding shear force of the design skeleton curve when the spacing of stud is excessively far from each other. It is also found that the shape of the stud did not affect the shear behavior of SC wall but, the spacing influenced to its composite action. In this study, it was also proven that the inclined shaped stud resists more effectively to the bucking load than the general shaped stud in SC wall.

The front-end side members of automobiles absorb most of the energy in a front-end collision. The front-end side members are required to have a high stiffness together with easiness to collapse sequentially to absorb more impact energy. The axial static collapse test (5mm/mim) was conducted by using UTM with respect to the single hat shaped section members which are the standard section shape of the spot welded section members, to the single cap shaped section members, to the double cap shaped section members and to the double hat shaped section members whose section shape are changed in order to give more stiffness. As a result of test, the energy absorbing characteristic was analyzed for different section shapes. That is, it was analyzed that the change of section shape influenced the absorbing energy, the mean collapse load and the maximum collapse load, and that the relation between the change of section shape and the collapse mode.

Characteristics of twin spray ejected from two swirl spray nozzles were studied experimentally. By using a patternator for measuring volumetric flux of drop flow at various locations inside the spray, variation of the twin spray pattern along the axial direction was studied with changing the injection pressure and the distance between the nozzles. The general findings from the experiments are as follows: (i) as axial distance from the nozzles increases, the spray pattern in x-z plane which contains both nozzles changes significantly. On the other hand the spray pattern in y-z plane which passes the midpoint between two nozzles remains almost unchanged at outer region as axial distance and injection pressure vary; (ii) at the downstream of the twin spray with spray interaction, the maximum volumetric flux in y-z plane (q$_{max}$)$_{y}$, has tendency to become larger than that of x-z plane (q$_{max}$)$_{x}$, due to a characteristic(hollow cone shape) of the constituting swirl sprays, and this trend is pronounced at higher injection pressure since the cross-section of each single spray remains hollow at the longer axial distance from each nozzle with higher injection pressure; (iii) at a certain axial distance from the nozzles, the cross-sectional shape of the boundary of the twin spray tends to be circular similar to that of the single spray with twice the flow-rate, and that distance is not proportional to the distance between two nozzles; (iv) though there are some collisions between droplets from each nozzles of twin spray, in present experimental range, the flow pattern of gas including the entrainment effect plays the key role in spray interaction.n.ion.n.

This paper describes the design of a slit on ground plane to improve the axial ratio of the spiral antenna for the NLJD system application. A proposed slit shape located on the ground plane is changed to compare with the archimedean spiral slit shape of the antenna in reference [7]. In order to improve the axial ratio, the slit on the ground plane is divided by the uniform angle and the conductor of position where the current has the opposite direction each other is eliminated. Measured return loss, radiation pattern and gain show a good agreement with the computer simulation results. Even though the proposed slit structure on the ground plane was changed to compare with ones of reference [7], the characteristics such as return loss, radiation pattern and gain are not almost changed and only the axial ratio was remarkably improved at 4.88 GHz.
