The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plantation thinning on physical and mechanical properties of Larix kaempferi. Tree samples were obtained from unthinned, moderately, heavily thinned plantations where located in Kwangryung forest research stand. The effects of different thinning methods on the bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths of Larix kaempferi were explored. Average latewood ratio with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning < heavy thinning treatment. Average annual ring width with various thinning treatments showed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning or heavy thinning treatment. Average bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning > moderate thinning > heavy thinning treatment. This indicates that thinning treatment reduces average bending and parallel to grain compressive strength properties.
In this study the compressive strength data were collected from readymix concrete plants, and the analysis result showed that when using AD test the concrete of 24MPa is suitable than that of 21MPa for normal distribution. The prediction formula for average compressive strength were proposed to $f_{cu}=f_{ck}+4(MPa)$. When comparing the proposed equations and existing relationship, the estimation variations of elastic modulus and creep modulus were not significant. The proposed equation confirmed that there was no effect to the influence function for modulus of elasticity and creep. Therefore, it was concluded that the proposed equation could replace the exiting interaction formula.

In this study, the correlation between concrete core compressive strength and rebound hardness of urban railway underground structures was analyzed. The equations for the range of rebound hardness were derived and compared with the measured concrete core strengths for each range of rebound hardness to confirm the adequacy of the estimated compressive strength. As the result, the linear regression analysis results of the average compressive strength by the Gaussian probability density function (representative compressive strength estimation formula) and the estimation formula by the rebound hardness range were founded to match well within 3% of the experimental concrete core compressive strength test results. Therefore, the stochastic statistical analysis using the rebound hardness measurement results suggested in this study could be help to secure the confidence level of the correlation between the rebound hardness and the concrete compressive strength which are relatively large deviation according to the estimation equations.

On large-scale sites, concrete is often delivered from a number of ready-mixed concrete companies, but even if the same concrete mixture table is used, it is thought that there will be a difference in quality due to differences in materials and manufacturing equipment. Due to a lack of previous research in this area, this study measured the properties of fresh concrete, compressive strength, and chlorine ion diffusion coefficient using the concrete supplied by 12 ready-mixed companies in Busan. The fresh concrete properties met the criteria. The compressive strength increased by 137% for 30MPa, 131% for 45MPa, and 117% for 80MPa by specified compressive strength. For the chlorine ion diffusion coefficient, the average value for each specified compressive strength could be derived without significant variation. The higher the compressive strength, the greater the deviation , and the lower the compressive strength, the greater the deviation in the chlorine ion diffusion coefficient.
The samples were prepared with hydroxyapatite(HAp) powder and eugenol (Eugenol/HAp = 15, 20, 25, 30wt%). The samples were dried at room temperature. The higher mechanical properties was observed in HAp sample with 25wt% Eugenol. The average compressive and bending strength in HAp with 25wt% Eugenol are 542 kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 366 kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ respectively. This strength is higher compare to that of the cortical bone.
In this study, Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber was used to increase strength (unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength) of bio-cemented sand using microorganism. Ottawa sand was mixed with PVA fibers having three fiber contents (0, 0.4, and 0.8%). The fiber mixed sand was treated 14 times by using Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) which included culture (2 times per day) during 7 days to improve its engineering properties. The Bacillus Sporosarcina pasteurrii (Bacillus sp.) was used for urease activity. The specimen was prepared as a cylindrical specimen of 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength were measured after cementation. Moreover, calcium carbonate content and SEM analyses were performed with a piece of sample. An average value of unconfined compressive strength increased and then slightly decreased but an average value of tensile strength ratio increased with increasing carbonate content the in same condition. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength increased about 30% and 160%, respectively. A strength ratio of unconfined compressive strength to tensile strength representing the brittleness decreased from 8 to 4 when fiber content increased from 0.0 to 0.8%. Such bio-cemented sand can be applied into slope area to prevent its shear failure or increase its tensile strength.

Bulk graphite is manufactured using graphite scrap as the filler and phenolic resin as the binder. Graphite scrap, which is the by-product of processing the final graphite product, is pulverized and sieved by particle size. The relationship between the density and porosity is analyzed by measuring the mechanical properties of bulk graphite. The filler materials are sieved into mean particle sizes of 10.62, 23.38, 54.09, 84.29, and 126.64 ㎛. The bulk graphite density using the filler powder with a particle size of 54.09 ㎛ is 1.38 g/㎤, which is the highest value in this study. The compressive strength tends to increase as the bulk graphite density increases. The highest compressive strength of 43.14 MPa is achieved with the 54.09 ㎛ powder. The highest flexural strength of 23.08 MPa is achieved using the 10.62 ㎛ powder, having the smallest average particle size. The compressive strength is affected by the density of bulk graphite, and the flexural strength is affected by the filler particle size of bulk graphite.
An experimental program has been carried out to investigate the effect of edge-slope on compressive strength of concrete specimens. In this study, effect of such slope was investigated by testing 100 standard cylinder specimens and 40 standard cubes. When molds are put on a slanted place, wet concrete starts to flow through the open end of mold. It keeps flowing until it reaches to a parallel surface with the place over which it was placed. That creates a sloped surface over the loading area. Experimental results revealed significant relationships between failure loads and slope of loading surface for cylinders. Angled cracks occurred in sloped cylinder specimens. Tension cracks occurred in cube specimens. Fracture mechanisms were also evaluated by using finite element analyses approach. Experiments yielded an exponential curve with bandwidth for cylinders. Average value of curve is $y={\frac{\pi}{2}}e^{-cf}$ between slope and compressive strength. Inclination is much effective parameter for cylinders than cubes.
This experimental study investigates the effectiveness of applying carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) jackets for the retrofit of short reinforced concrete (RC) columns with inadequate transverse reinforcement and stirrup spacing to longitudinal rebar diameter equal to 12. RC columns scaled at 1/3, with round and square section, were subjected to axial compression up to failure. A damage scale is introduced for the assessment of the damage severity, which focusses on the extent of buckling of the longitudinal rebars. The damaged specimens were subsequently repaired with unidirectional CFRP jackets without any treatment of the buckled reinforcing bars and were finally re-tested to failure. Test results indicate that CFRP jackets may be effectively applied to rehabilitate RC columns (a) with inadequate transverse reinforcement constructed according to older practices so as to meet modern code requirements, and (b) with moderately buckled bars without the need of previously repairing the reinforcement bars, an application technique which may considerably facilitate the retrofit of earthquake damaged RC columns. Factors for the estimation of the reduced mechanical properties of the repaired specimens compared to the respective values for intact CFRP-jacketed specimens, in relation to the level of damage prior to retrofit, are proposed both for the compressive strength and the average modulus of elasticity. It was determined that the compressive strength of the retrofitted CFRP-jacketed columns is reduced by 90% to 65%, while the average modulus of elasticity is lower by 60% to 25% in respect to similar undamaged columns jacketed with the same layers of CFRP.

A 36 stories high multi-use building was designed with the specified concrete strength range of 300~400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ On the ground of the concept of compressive strength, adequate mix designing for the concrete, which has the target strength range of 390-520kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, was carried out to provide enough strength margin. And with due regard to the workability and transportation time, the slump and slump flow ranged 16~21cm and 30~45cm respectively, maintaining these properties up to 2-hours from the beginning of the mix. The high-range water reducer is incorporated into the mix as a admixture. The building construction is controlled satisfactorily, so far. The actual average 28-day compressive strength is 370kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the standard deviation is 28kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and the coefficient of variation is 7.6% for concrete of 300kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ specified strength.
