In this paper, acoustic transmission characteristics are theoretically considered on a cylindrical cavity system. The cylindrical cavity system is a simplified model of the acoustic cavity of King Seongdeok Divine Bell and it consists of a main cavity, a gap and an auxiliary cavity, Under a point sound source in the main cavity, acoustic frequency response property is determined and acoustic modes are analysed. The results are compared with those by the boundary element analysis using SYSNOISE. Using the proposed theoretical method, the effect of the auxiliary cavity and the gap on the resonance frequency and sound transmission characteristics is identified. Finally the best combination of the auxiliary cavity and gap is determined for the maximum transmission of the source frequency.
This paper presents a rigorous solution for spherical cavity expansion in unsaturated soils under constant suction condition. The hydraulic behavior that describes the saturation-suction relationship is modeled by a void ratio-dependent soil-water characteristic curve, which allows the hydraulic behavior to fully couple with the mechanical behavior that is described by an extended critical state soil model for unsaturated soil through the specific volume. Considering the boundary condition and introducing an auxiliary coordinate, the problem is formulated to a system of first-order differential equations with three principal stress components and suction as basic unknowns, which is solved as an initial value problem. Parameter analyses are conducted to investigate the effects of suction and the overconsolidation ratio on the overall expansion responses, including the pressure-expansion response, the distribution of the stress components around the cavity, and the stress path of the soil during cavity expansion. The results reveal that the expansion pressures and the distribution of the stress components in unsaturated soils are generally higher than those in saturated soils due to the existence of suction.
A semi-analytical solution to responses of overconsolidated (OC) unsaturated soils surrounding an expanding spherical cavity under constant suction condition is presented. To capture the elastoplastic hydro-mechanical property of OC unsaturated soils, the unified hardening (UH) model for OC unsaturated soil is adopted in corporation with a soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) and two suction yield surfaces. Taking the specific volume, radial stress, tangential stress and degree of saturation as the four basic unknowns, the problem investigated is formulated by solving a set of first-order ordinary differential equations with the help of an auxiliary variable and an iterative algorithm. The present solution is validated by comparing with available solution based on the modified Cam Clay (MCC) model. Parametric studies reveal that the hydraulic and mechanical responses of spherical cavity expanding in unsaturated soils are not only coupled, but also affected by suction and overconsolidation ratio (OCR) significantly. More importantly, whether hydraulic yield will occur or not depends only on the initial relationship between suction yield stress and suction. The presented solution can be used for calibration of some insitu tests in OC unsaturated soil.
Cavity expansion is a classical problem in the field of solid mechanics with a wide range of applications in geotechnical and petroleum engineering. A drained solution is developed for cylindrical cavity expansion in anisotropic soils under biaxial in-situ stresses using a K0-based anisotropic modified Cam-clay model (K0-AMCC). The problem is formulated by solving differential equations using an auxiliary variable, which provides analytical expressions for the volume and four stress components of the soil around the cylindrical cavity. The solution is validated by comparisons with existing well-developed solutions. The results show that the present solution well captures the cavity expansion responses in anisotropic soils under biaxial in-situ stresses, and removes limiting assumptions that the cylindrical cavity expands under uniform in-situ stress in isotropic soils. The elastic-plastic boundary of the expanding cylindrical cavity in K0-consolidated anisotropic soils under biaxial in-situ stresses is a circle rather than an ellipse in isotropic soils, and the mathematical proof is provided in detail.
The automated dental cavity detection program for a new concept intra-oral dental x-ray imaging device, an auxiliary diagnosis system, which is able to assist a dentist to identify dental caries in an early stage and to make an accurate diagnosis, was to be developed. The primary theory of the automatic dental cavity detection program is divided into two algorithms; one is an image segmentation skill to discriminate between a dental cavity and a normal tooth and the other is a computational method to analyze feature of an tooth image and take an advantage of it for detection of dental cavities. In the present study, it is, first, evaluated how accurately the DRLSE (Direct Regularized Level Set Evolution) method extracts demarcation surrounding the dental cavity. In order to evaluate the ability of the developed algorithm to automatically detect dental cavities, 7 tooth phantoms from incisor to molar were fabricated which contained a various form of cavities. Then, dental cavities in the tooth phantom images were analyzed with the developed algorithm. Except for two cavities whose contours were identified partially, the contours of 12 cavities were correctly discriminated by the automated dental caries detection program, which, consequently, proved the practical feasibility of the automatic dental lesion detection algorithm. However, an efficient and enhanced algorithm is required for its application to the actual dental diagnosis since shapes or conditions of the dental caries are different between individuals and complicated. In the future, the automatic dental cavity detection system will be improved adding pattern recognition or machine learning based algorithm which can deal with information of tooth status.

A geometrical inverse heat conduction problem is solved for the development of Infrared Computerized-Axial-Tomography (IR CAT) Scan by using a boundary element method in conjunction with regularization procedure. In this problem, an overspecified temperature condition by infrared scanning is provided on the surface, and is used together with other conditions to solve the position of an unknown boundary (cavity). An auxiliary problem is introduced in the solution of this problem. By defining a hypothetical inner boundary for the auxiliary problem domain, the cavity is located interior to the domain and its position is determined by solving a potential problem. Boundary element method with regularization procedure is used to solve this problem, and the effects of regularization on the inverse solution method are investigated by means of numerical analysis.

For the favorable performance of a D.I. diesel engine, it is important to improve the mixture formation process and the ensuing early stage of combustion process. In the present paper, high speed photography was employed to investigate the effectiveness of a cavity digged in a piston crown for some more useful utilization of air. The cavity would function to improve mixing of fuel and air by the increase of turbulence of air and by the impingement of fuel spray on the cavity wall. The results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) From an aspect of thermal efficiency, it is effective to inject the spray tangentially to the cavity wall to enlarge the area of spray evaporation. (2) some deductions obtained from previous investigations using a hot air stream duct are supported by the present results. For example, it is effective for the quick development of flames throughout the combustion chamber to mix the evaporated fuel of main spray with the intermediates brought about by the early stage of combustion of the preceded auxiliary fuel spray.
Modified fluid critical solid fraction method was utilized as a prediction parameter to describe the shrinkage formation including the position, shape and amount of shrinkage cavities. A numerical scheme was implemented adapting this method for the evaluation of solidification defects in various casting processes. In the present numerical code, the form of shrinkage cavity can be simultaneously determined when an isolated loop is predicted to occur by the fluid critical solid fraction method. An auxiliary parameter, shrinkage potential, was also used in order to calculate the amount of residual liquid during solidification. Solidification analysis was carried out for the validation of the present scheme. It was shown that the calculated results were in good agreement with those of practical casting runs in all of the casting processes envolved in the present research. It may be concluded that the present program successfully predicts the detailed shrinkage formation behavior without the consideration of interdendritic fluid flow analysis.
This paper introduces conceptual design of scroll expander-compressor unit for fuel cell. Since air discharged out of the fuel cell stack after reaction has still high pressure energy, some power can be extracted out of it by directing it to pass through an expanding device so that the extracted power can be used to drive an auxiliary compressor. For this purpose, a scroll type expander coupled to a scroll type compressor was designed: orbiting scroll of the expander and that of the compressor were made to share three of common drive pins installed in the mid frame plate, and central cavity in the mid-plate was used as a back pressure chamber to provide axial compliance for both orbiting scrolls. Performance analysis for the expander showed that the shaft power of the expander could reduce the auxiliary power consumption in the fuel cell by about one third at the scroll clearance of $10{\mu}m$.
Solidification analysis was conducted on large steel castings and ingots by a modified finite difference method. Auto-mesh generation system was developed for improving the application of the computer analysis system to casting disign. Combined use of the prediction parameters, solidification time and temperature gradient, and an auxiliary parameter, shrinkage potential, were used to predict the formation of shrinkage defects. Several examples on the prediction of shrinkage cavity by this method were campared with the experimental reslts. It was found that a quantitative design of large steel castings and ingots can be made by the computer aided analysis of solidification process.
