Given recent accidents involving autonomous vehicles, driver monitoring technology related to the transition of control in autonomous vehicles is gaining prominence. Driver status monitoring systems recognize the driver's level of alertness and identify possible impairments in the driving ability owing to conditions including drowsiness and distraction. In autonomous vehicles, predictive factors for the transition to manual driving should also be included. During traditional human driving, monitoring the driver's status is relatively straightforward owing to the consistency of crucial cues, such as the driver's location, head orientation, gaze direction, and hand placement. However, monitoring becomes more challenging during autonomous driving because of the absence of direct manual control and the driver's engagement in other activities, which may obscure the accurate assessment of the driver's readiness to intervene. Hence, safety-ensuring technology must be balanced with user experience in autonomous driving. We explore relevant global and domestic regulations, the new car assessment program, and related standards to extract requirements for driver status monitoring. This kind of monitoring can both enhance the autonomous driving performance and contribute to the overall safety of autonomous vehicles on the road.
This paper presents steering system requirements to ensure the stabilized lateral control of autonomous driving vehicles. The two main objectives of a lateral controller in autonomous vehicles are maintenance of vehicle stability and tracking of the desired path. Even if the desired steering angle is immediately determined by the upper level controller, the overall controller performance is greatly influenced by the specification of steering system actuators. Since one of the major inescapable traits that affects controller performance is the time delay of the steering actuator, our work is mainly focused on finding adequate parameters of high level control algorithm to compensate these response characteristics and guarantee vehicle stability. Actual vehicle steering angle response was obtained with Electric Power Steering (EPS) actuator test subject to various longitudinal velocity. Steering input and output response analysis was performed via MATLAB system identification toolbox. The use of system identification is advantageous since the transfer function of the system is conveniently obtained compared with methods that require actual mathematical modeling of the system. Simulation results of full vehicle model suggest that the obtained tuning parameter yields reduced oscillation and lateral error compared with other cases, thus enhancing path tracking performance.
This paper presents a development of throttle and brake controller for autonomous vehicle simulation environment. Most of 3D simulator control autonomous vehicle by throttle and brake command. Therefore additional longitudinal controller is required to calculate pedal input from desired acceleration. The controller consists of two parts, feedback controller and feedforward controller. The feedback controller is designed to compensate error between the actual acceleration and desired acceleration calculated from autonomous driving algorithm. The feedforward controller is designed for fast response and the output is determined by the actual vehicle speed and desired acceleration. To verify the performance of the controller, simulations were conducted for various scenarios, and it was confirmed that the controller can successfully follow the target acceleration.

Autonomous vehicles can be exposed to severe danger when failure occurs in any of its components. For this reason many countries are making efforts on the legislative issue how to objectively evaluate failure safety of an autonomous vehicle when such a vehicle is commercially available to a customer in the near future. In level-3 automation, a driver must take over the control of his vehicle when failure occurs, and the driver's controllability must be secured for escape from the imminent danger. In this paper, quantitative methods have been developed for evaluating failure safety of the level-3 autonomous vehicle, and they were validated by simulation. And also, we confirmed that the proposed evaluation method can quantitatively evaluate the failure safety.

Driver acceptance of autonomous driving is very important. The autonomous driving longitudinal controller, which is one of the factors affecting acceptability, consists of a high-level controller and a low-level controller. The host controller decides the cruise control and the space control according to the situation and creates the required target speed. The sub-controller performs control by creating an acceleration signal to follow the target speed. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to improve the inter-vehicle distance fluctuations that occur in the cruise control and space control switching problems in the host controller. The proposed method is to add an approach algorithm to the cruise control at the time of switching from cruise control to space control so that it is switched to space control at the correct switching distance. Through this, the error was improved from 12m error to 4m, and actual vehicle verification was performed.

In this paper, we propose a new approach to the autonomous and high-speed indoor navigation of wheeled mobile robots using hybrid system controller. The hierarchical structure of hybrid system presented consists of high-level reasoning process and the low-level motion control process and the environmental interaction. In a discrete event system, the discrete states are defined by the user-defined constraints and the reference motion commands are specified in the abstracted motions. The hybrid control system applied for the nonholonomic mobile robots can combine the motion planning and autonomous navigation with obstacle avoidance in the indoor navigation problem. For the evaluation of the proposed algorithm, the algorithm is implemented to the two-wheel driven mobile robot system. The experimental results show that the hybrid system approach is an effective method for the autonomous navigation in indoor environments.

We designed a family of completely autonomous mobile robots with local intelligence. Each robot has a number of on-board sensors, including vision, and does not rely on global positioning systems The on-board embedded controller is sufficient to analyze several low-resolution color images per second. This enables our robots to perform several complex tasks such as navigation, map generation, or providing intelligent group behavior. Not being limited to playing the game of soccer and being completely autonomous, we are also looking at a number of other interesting scenarios. The robots can communicate with each other, e.g. for exchanging positions, information about objects or just the local states they are currently in (e.g. sharing their current objectives with other robots in the group). We are particularly interested in the differences between a behavior-based approach versus a traditional control algorithm at this still very low level of action.

In this paper, a precision landing approach is implemented based on real-time image processing. A full-scale landmark for automatic landing is used. canny edge detection method is applied to identify the outside quadrilateral while circular hough transform is used for the recognition of inside circle. Position information on the ground landmark is uplinked to the unmanned helicopter via ground control computer in real time so that the unmanned helicopter control the air vehicle for accurate landing approach. Ground test and a couple of flight tests for autonomous landing approach show that the image processing and automatic landing operation system have good performance for the landing approach phase at the altitude of $20m{\sim}1m$ above ground level.
This paper proposes multiple RLS and actuator performance index-based adaptive actuator fault-tolerant control and detection algorithms for longitudinal autonomous driving. The proposed algorithm computes the desired acceleration using feedback law for longitudinal autonomous driving. When actuator fault or performance degradation exists, it is designed that the desired acceleration is adjusted with the calculated feedback gains based on multiple RLS and gradient descent method for fault-tolerant control. In order to define the performance index, the error between the desired and actual accelerations is used. The window-based weighted error standard deviation is computed with the design parameters. Fault level decision algorithm that can represent three fault levels such as normal, warning, emergency levels is proposed in this study. Performance evaluation under various driving scenarios with actuator fault was conducted based on co-simulation of Matlab/Simulink and commercial software (CarMaker).
This paper presents a conceptual design for a plant-wide autonomous operation system that uses artificial intelligence techniques. The autonomous operation system has the power and ability to perform the control functions needed for the emergency operation of a nuclear power plant (NPP) with reduced operator intervention. This paper discusses the emergency operation and level of automation in an NPP and presents the design requirements for an autonomous emergency operation system (A-EOS). Then, an architecture that consists of several modules is proposed, with descriptions of the functions. Finally, this paper introduces a prototype of the suggested autonomous system that integrates the authors' previous works.
