Unlike conventional vehicle traffic accidents, autonomous vehicles traffic accidents can be caused by various factors, including technical problems, the environment, and driver interaction. With the future advances in autonomous driving technology, new issues are expected to emerge in addition to the existing accident causes, and various scenario-based approaches are needed to respond to them. This study developed autonomous vehicle traffic accident scenarios by collecting autonomous driving accident reports, CA DMV collision reports, autonomous driving mode disengagement reports, and autonomous driving actual accident videos. The scenarios were derived based on the functional safety system failure modes of ISO 26262 and attempted to reflect the various issues of autonomous driving functions. The autonomous vehicle scenarios derived through this study are expected to play an essential role in preventing and preparing for various autonomous vehicle traffic accidents in the future and improving the safety of autonomous driving technology.
This paper presents a longitudinal control algorithm for ensuring takeover time of autonomous vehicle using V2V communication. In the autonomous driving of more than level 3, autonomous systems should control the vehicles by itself partially. However if the driver's intervention is required for functional safety, the driver should take over the control reasonably. Autonomous driving system has to be designed so that drivers can take over the control from autonomous vehicle reasonably for driving safety. In this study, control algorithm considering takeover time has been developed based on computation method of takeover time. Takeover time is analysed by conditions of longitudinal velocity of preceding vehicle in time-velocity plane. In addition, desired clearance is derived based on takeover time. The performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm in this study was conducted using 3D vehicle model with actual driving data in Matlab/Simulink environment. The results of the performance evaluation show that the longitudinal control algorithm can control while securing takeover time reasonably.
As a sales volume of autonomous vehicle continually grows up, regulations on this new technology are being introduced around the world. For example, safety standards for the Level 3 automated driving system was promulgated in December 2019 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Korean government. In order to promote the development of autonomous vehicle technology and ensure its safety simultaneously, the regulations on the automated driving systems should be phased in to keep pace with technology progress and market expansion. However, according to SAE J3016, which is well known to classify the level of the autonomous vehicle technologies, the description for classification is rather abstract. Therefore it is necessary to describe the automated driving system in more detail in terms of the 'Level.' In this study, the functions and characteristics of automated driving system are carefully classified at each level based on the commentary in the Informal Working Group (IWG) of the UN WP29. In particular, regarding the Level 4, technical issues are characterized with respect to vehicle tasks, driver tasks, system performance and regulations. The important features of the autonomous vehicles to meet Level 4 are explored on the viewpoints of driver replacement, emergency response and connected driving performance.
This paper presents development of a vehicle lateral and longitudinal control for autonomous driving control and test results obtained using an electric vehicle. Sliding control theory has been used to develop a vehicle speed and distance control algorithm. The longitudinal control algorithm that maintains safety and comfort of the vehicle consists of a cruise and STOP&GO control depending on traffic conditions. Desired steering angle is determined through the lateral position error and the yaw angle error based on preview optimal control. Motor control inputs have been directly derived from the sliding control law. The performance of the autonomous driving control which is integrated with a lateral and longitudinal control is investigated by computer simulations and driving test using an electric vehicle. Electric vehicle system consists of DC driving motor, an electric power steering system, main controller (Autobox)
In order to ensure reliability the high-level automated driving such as Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and universal robot taxi provided by autonomous driving systems, the operation with high integrity must be generated within the defined Operation Design Domain (ODD). For this, the position and posture accuracy requirements of autonomous driving systems based on the safety driving requirements for autonomous vehicles and domestic road geometry standard are necessarily demanded. This paper presents localization requirements for safe road driving of autonomous ground vehicles based on the requirements of the positioning system installed on autonomous vehicle systems, the domestic road geometry standard and the dimensions of the vehicle to be designed. Based on this, 4 Protection Levels (PLs) such as longitudinal, lateral, vertical PLs, and attitude PL are calculated. The calculated results reveal that the PLs are more strict to urban roads than highways. The defined requirements can be used as a basis for guaranteeing the minimum reliability of the designed autonomous driving system on roads.

Remote-controlled and autonomous driving based on artificial intelligence are key elements required for unmanned combat vehicles. The required capability of such an unmanned combat vehicle should be expressed in reasonable required operational capability(ROC). To this end, in this paper, the requirements of an unmanned combat vehicle operated under a manned-unmanned teaming were analyzed. The functional requirements are remote operation and control, communication, sensor-based situational awareness, field environment recognition, autonomous return, vehicle tracking, collision prevention, fault diagnosis, and simultaneous localization and mapping. Remote-controlled and autonomous driving of unmanned combat vehicles could be achieved through the combination of these functional requirements. It is expected that the requirement analysis results presented in this study will be utilized to satisfy the military operational concept and provide reasonable technical indicators in the system development stage.
Collecting a rich but meaningful training data plays a key role in machine learning and deep learning researches for a self-driving vehicle. This paper introduces a detailed overview of existing open-source simulators which could be used for training self-driving vehicles. After reviewing the simulators, we propose a new effective approach to make a synthetic autonomous vehicle simulation platform suitable for learning and training artificial intelligence algorithms. Specially, we develop a synthetic simulator with various realistic situations and weather conditions which make the autonomous shuttle to learn more realistic situations and handle some unexpected events. The virtual environment is the mimics of the activity of a genuine shuttle vehicle on a physical world. Instead of doing the whole experiment of training in the real physical world, scenarios in 3D virtual worlds are made to calculate the parameters and training the model. From the simulator, the user can obtain data for the various situation and utilize it for the training purpose. Flexible options are available to choose sensors, monitor the output and implement any autonomous driving algorithm. Finally, we verify the effectiveness of the developed simulator by implementing an end-to-end CNN algorithm for training a self-driving shuttle.
For the commercialization and standardization of autonomous vehicles, demand for rigorous safety criteria has been increased over the world. In Korea, the number of extraordinary service permission for automated vehicles has risen since Hyundai Motor Company got its initial license in March 2016. Nevertheless, licensing standards and evaluation factors are still insufficient for operating on public roadways. To assure driving safety, it is significant to verify whether or not the vehicle's decision is similar to human driving. This paper validates the safety of the autonomous vehicle by drawing scenario-based comparisons between manual driving and autonomous driving. In consideration of real traffic situations and safety priority, seven scenarios were chosen and classified into basic and advanced scenarios. All scenarios and safety factors are constructed based on existing ADAS requirements and investigated via a computer simulation and actual experiment. The input data was collected by an experimental vehicle test on the SNU FMTC test track located at Siheung. Then the offline simulation was conducted to verify the output was appropriate and comparable to the manual driving data.

Recently, the importance of simulation validation in a virtual environment for autonomous driving system validation is increasing. At the same time, interest in the advancement of the virtual driving environment is also increasing. To develop autonomous driving technology, a simulation environment similar to the real-world environment is needed. For this reason, not only the road model is configured in the virtual driving environment, but also the driving environment configuration that includes the surrounding environments -traffic, object, etc- is necessary. In this article, FMTC, which is a test bed for autonomous vehicles, is implemented in a virtual environment and advanced to form a virtual driving environment similar to that of real FMTC. In addition, the similarity of the virtual driving environment is verified through comparative analysis with the real FMTC.

This paper presents a method of longitudinal motion planning of autonomous vehicles to deal with the non-signalized crosswalk environment. Based on the traffic laws, vehicles should slow down when passing the non-signalized crosswalk to prepare for situations where a nearby pedestrian starts to cross. If a pedestrian is in the crossing phase, vehicles should stop in front of the stop-line and wait until the pedestrian finishes the crossing maneuver. To realize these behaviors in autonomous vehicles, the driving mode and corresponding driving strategy are determined when vehicles encounter the crosswalk. The driving mode is determined according to the behavioral status of the nearby pedestrian. Longitudinal motion for the stopping or passing maneuver is planned according to the determined driving mode. The proposed algorithm has been validated via autonomous driving tests with our test vehicle in a real world. The test results show that the proposed algorithm enables the test vehicle to follow the traffic laws and behave safely against crossing pedestrians in the non-signalized crosswalk.
