Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the fully immersive virtual reality (FIVR) program changes in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) by age according to heart rate variability (HRV). Methods: A total of 44 subjects were classified into group 1(aged 20-30), group 2(aged 40-60), and group 3(aged 70 and above). The study analyzed the HRV using a pulse wave analyzer and compared the ANS changes before and after applying the FIVR of the group. The LF, HF, RMSSD, and SDNN were measured. Fifteen minutes of virtual reality applications were applied to all subjects, and 1 min of rest was given in the middle of the session. A was used for anteroposterior comparisons of the ANS. Results: The HF, LF, RMSSD, and SDNN values were not statistically significant in all groups, but they all increased. The RMSSD value was statistically significant because it increased in group 3 (p<0.05). Those of the other two groups were not statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: An FIVR program does not have a negative effect on the ANS response.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of first clinical training on stress, anxiety and changes in autonomic nervous system in nursing students. Methods: Seventy-four nursing students were assigned to the experimental group (n=36) that had two weeks of clinical training, and the control group (n=38) that had only two weeks of regular classes. Perceived stress, state anxiety and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured at the beginning and end of the experiment. Results: Perceived stress in the experimental group was significantly higher than in the control group. However, State anxiety was not significantly different between the two groups. All indices of HRV except LF/HF ratio were significantly different between the two groups. LF norm in the experimental group was significantly higher than in the control group, and HF norm in the experimental group was significantly lower than in the control group. Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be suggested that clinical training increases the perceived stress and affects the changes in autonomic nervous system in nursing students.
Objectives: To identify the difference of autonomic nervous system activity in women with overactive bladder between women with pre-menopausal onset and post-menopausal onset. Methods: Total of 46 women with overactive bladder participated in this study. Patients were categorized in two groups, patients with pre-menopausal onset(n=31) and post-menopausal onset(n=15). We measured and compared parameters of Heart Rate Variability of patients. The results were analysed using SPSS for windows 12.0. Results: On frequency domain analysis, the patients with post-menopausal onset had significantly decreased mean value of Total Power, High Frequence, Low Frequence, compared with the patients with post-menopausal onset. Conclusion: Decreased Total Power of patients with post-menopausal onset indicated that they may have had decreased activity of autonomic nervous system. Also, the patients with pre-menopausal onset had relatively increased sympathetic activity than the patients with post-menopausal onset.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and the cold-heat pattern in patients with chronic constipation. Methods : Subjects with chronic constipation (n=30) and without chronic constipation (n=20) were recruited, interviewed and measured for heart rate variability (HRV). Chronic constipation was defined as functional constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with constipation based on Rome III criteria. We surveyed patients' general characteristics, categorized by cold-heat pattern, and took measurement of HRV for 5 minutes. Analysis was conducted among these three indices. Results : Women accounted for most of the subjects with chronic constipation (96.7%). In groups with or without constipation, the number of cold patterns was more than of heat patterns. The mean heart rate of subjects without chronic constipation was significantly higher than that of subjects with chronic constipation. No other statistical significance was noted among indices of HRV and cold-heat pattern. Conclusions : Through this study, there were few relationships between autonomic nervous system measured by HRV and cold-heat pattern in chronic constipation.
1. Objectives When we give Jowiseungcheong-tang to Taeumin patients, analyzing a change of their autonomic nervous system. It is measured by the heart rate variability(HRV) analyzer. 2. Methods We give Jowiseungcheong-tang to ten Taeumin patients for three days and examine the HRV at first time and three days later. 3. Results and Conclusions We compared two HRV results. The value of RRNN(average of normal RR intervals), SDNN(the standard deviation of all normal RR intervals), RMSSD(the root mean square of successive differences between the normal heart beats) have a downward tendency. Norm HF(normalized high frequency power) have a upward tendency. norm LF (normalized low frequency power) and LHR(LF/HF ratio) have a downward tendency. It means hypofunction of autonomic nervous system. But all results are not significant. We think that restudy is needed with more patients and longer periods afterward.

Background: The myofascial release technique is known to be an effective technique for increasing posterior fascia flexibility in short hamstring syndrome (SHS) subjects. But therapeutic mechanism of myofascial relaxation remains unclear. Recently, the theory of autonomic nervous system domination has been raised, however, a proper study to test the theory has not been conducted. Objectives: To investigate whether the application of the myofascial release technique can induce changes in the autonomic nervous system and affect the secretion of stress hormones and myofascial relaxation. Design: Quasi-experimental study. Methods: Twenty-four subjects with SHS were randomly divided into two groups. In the experimental group, the suboccipital muscle inhibition (SMI) technique was applied to the subjects for 4 min in supine position, and in the control group, the subjects were lying in the supine position only. A forward flexion distance (FFD) was conducted, blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels were measured before and after the intervention and 30 min after intervention to determine myofascial relaxation and stress hormone levels. The evaluation was conducted separately in blind by an evaluator. Results: A FFD decreased in the experimental group, no change in cortisol was observed. On the contrary, a decrease in cortisol appeared in the control group after 30 minutes. Conclusion: The myofascial release technique is an effective treatment to increase the range of motion through posterior superior myofascial chain, but there is no evidence that myofascial release technique can control the autonomic nervous system.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the alteration of upper cervical manipulation to autonomic nervous system (ANS) through the heart rate variability(HRV) analysis in young healthy individuals. Design: Two-group pretest-posttest design. Methods: Thirty four young healthy participants (17 males and 17 females) were randomized into the 2 groups, such as the upper cervical manipulation group (UCM group, n=17), neck stretching group (NS group, n=17). UCM group received a upper cervical manipulation, especially on the atlas, and NS group did stretch for both side of upper trapezius and levator scapular. For the UCM, Atlas mobility was checked by therapist and thrust was given once at the posterior arch of Atlas. HRV was measured before and after intervention to investigate ANS alteration. After the intervention, both groups were given 3 minutes break-time before measuring HRV. Results: The UCM group showed significant differences in ANS Activity, Stress Resistance, Stress index and Fatigue Index (p<0.05) while no differences in NS group with before and after intervention. There were significant differences in ANS Activity, Stress Resistance, and Fatigue Index between groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study suggected that upper cervical manipulationhas positive effects on the ANS activity, stress resistance, and fatigue index.

PURPOSE: A Mat Pilates exercise program and a stretching program were conducted for elderly women to determine how the two interventions affect their autonomic nervous system. METHODS: The subjects of this study were 20 elderly women over 65 who regularly used a welfare center located in C city of Chungnam. The subjects were assigned randomly to the following two groups: 10 people in the breathing and mat Pilates exercise program group (PG) and 10 people in the breathing and stretching program group (SG). RESULTS: The present study design is randomized controlled trial. Vascular age was decreased significantly in the PG (p < .05). The mean stress index was reduced significantly in the PG (p < .05), and the amount of change was significantly larger in the PG than in the SG (p < .05). The health index was significantly lower in the PG than the SG (p < .05), and the amount of change in the PG was significantly more prominent than in the SG (p < .05). CONCLUSION: The Mat Pilates program was effective in improving the vascular age, average stress index, and health index of elderly women. In particular, it was significantly more effective than the stretching exercise program in improving the average stress and health indices.

As technology in 3D industry has rapidly advanced, a lot of studies primarily focusing on visual function and cognition have become vigorous. However, studies on effect of 3D visual fatigue on autonomic nervous system have not less been conducted. Thus, this study was to identify and determine the effect that might have a negative influence on sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, and cardiovascular system. Fifteen undergraduates (female: 9, mean age: $22.53{\pm}2.55$) participated and were sat on a comfortable chair, viewing a 3D content during about 1 hour. Cardiac responses like SDNN(standard deviation of RR intervals), RMS-SD(root mean squared successive difference), and HF/LF ratios extracted from the measured PPG(Photo-PlethysmoGram) before viewing 3D were compared to those after viewing 3D. The results showed that after subjects watched the 3D, responses in sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system were activated and deactivated, respectively relative to those before watching the 3D. The results showed that HF/LF ratio, Ln(LF), and Ln(HF) after viewing 3D were significantly reduced relative to those before viewing 3D. No significant effects were observed in SDNN and RMS-SD. Results obtained in this study showed that visual fatigue induced by watching 3D adversely influenced autonomic nervous system, and thereby reduced heart rate variability causing sympathetic nervous acceleration.
It has been shown that bilateral decrease of point H4,5,6 in Ryodoraku test is related with gastric dysmotility. This suggested that the system of Kyung-Rak related with anatomical gastric disease may not be the Stomach Meridian, in the view that the system of Kyung-Rak is similar to that of Ryodoraku, and which was not consistent with classical contents of Kyung-Rak principle. Therefore, this paper was done to investigate whether bilateral decrease of point H4,5,6 is a general sign of common gastric disease in Ryodoraku test and to study its relation between Kyung-Rak principle and autonomic nervous system as a mediator explaining Ryodoraku response. As shown in the results of this study, different electrical response of Ryodoraku between patients with dyspepsia of gastric dysmotility and gastric ulcer revealed discrepancy of location indicating anatomical stomach between Kyung-Rak principle and Ryodoraku and instability of explanation of autonomic nerve theory to Ryodoraku. Thus, it presented the possibility that artificial application of Kyung-Rak principle against Ryodoraku may destroy its originality in the clinical field. To correctly use Ryodoraku in the diagnosis or evaluation of disease, Ryodoraku test should be used according to Nakatani's suggestion and clinical indication of which is limited to the diseases complicated with dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.
