This paper presents the case studies on the friction related wears of an automotive tire, which is strongly connected to the safety and comfort of a driver during a running of a car. Wear scars of a tire tread are affected by various causes such as an air pressure, a wheel alignment, a driving speed, road conditions, starting and braking habits of a driver. The data were collected from used tires for a replacement at the car service center. Most of the wear problems came from the improper repair and adjustment of revolving components, which cause an unbalanced wear of a tread part of a tire. Thus, the regular checking of a tire radically reduces the wear scars of a tire and may increase a driving safety and a fuel economy of a car and a wear life of a tire.
Tire vibration modes are known to play a key role in vehicle ride and comfort characteristics. Inputs to the tire such as impacts, rough road surface, tire nonuniformities, and tread patterns can potentially excite tire vibration. In this study, experimental modal analysis on the tire in ground contact are performed by a 3-D impact at the center of contact patch to investigate which modes of tire influence the vibration of wheel and axle. Through the experiment, the vibration transmission properties from tire to axle are examined. And we have compared the influential tire modes when the tire is excited by a vertical impact with those when excited by the 3-D impact. Additionally, the modes of ground contact tire are compared with those of the suspended tire.
Braking is a basic and an important safety feature for all vehicles, and the final braking performance of a vehicle is determined by the vehicle's ABS performance and tire performance. However, the combination of excellent ABS and tires will not always ensure good braking performance. This is due to the fact that tire performance has non-linearity and uncertainty in predicting the repeated increase and decrease of wheel slip when activating the ABS, thus increasing the uncertainty of tire performance prediction. Furthermore, existing studies predicted braking performance after using an ABS that used a wheel slip control as a controller, which was different from an actual vehicle's ABS that controlled angular acceleration, therefore causing a decrease in the prediction accuracy of the braking performance. This paper reverse-designed the ABS that controlled angular acceleration based on the information on brake pressure, etc., which were obtained from vehicle tests, and established a braking performance prediction analysis model by combining a multi-body dynamics(MBD) vehicle model and a magic formula(MF) tire model. The established analysis model was verified after comparing it with the results of the braking tests of an actual vehicle. Using this analysis model, this study analyzed the braking effect by vehicle factor, and finally designed a tire that had optimized braking performance. As a result of this study, it was possible to design the MF tire model whose braking performance improved by 9.2 %.
This study is analyzed by stress contour of automotive tire at contact on road surface. Maximum equivalent stress as 61200Pa is shown on the lower mid part in case of tire contacted on road surface. As the air pressure of tire increases, maximum total deformation as 5mm is shown on the side part of tire. It can be shown that the side part of tire is unstabilized. There is no load effect on tire at its upper and lower directions. When the moment applied on the side of tire is increased 1.4 times as its value, the value of maximum principal stress is increased 1.4 times. The stress at the tire is in proportion to the moment applied on the its side. The tire tends to incline toward its side by this moment.
Tire force is one of important parameters which determine vehicle dynamics. However, it is hard to measure tire force directly through sensors. Not only the sensor is expensive but also installation of sensors on harsh environments is difficult. Therefore, estimation algorithms based on vehicle dynamic models are introduced to estimate the tire forces indirectly. In this paper, an estimation system for estimating lateral force and states is suggested. The state-space equation is constructed based on the 3-DOF bicycle model. Extended Kalman Filter, Unscented Kalman Filter and Ensemble Kalman Filter are used for estimating states on the nonlinear system. Performance of each algorithm is evaluated in terms of RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) and maximum error.

In this paper, we describe a hydraulic system design and vehicle dynamic modeling for development of tire roller traction, an essential aspect in the system analysis of tire rollers. Generally, tire rollers are one of the most useful types of machines employed in road construction, technically applied to many construction fields. We also conceptualize a new hydraulic and driving system as well as define the motion equations for dynamic and hydraulic analysis. First, we design the hydraulic circuit of the steering control and driving machine system, which can be employed to advance the performance of the lateral control, creating a prototype of construction equipment. Second, we formulate the hydraulic steering system model and hydraulic driving system model through tire roller system development technology. Finally, we validate the acquired performance results in actual tire roller equipment using the data acquisition system. These results may perhaps facilitate the establishment of priorities and design strategies for incremental introduction of tire roller technology into the vehicle and construction field.
The finite element analysis of tires has been conventionally performed by either neglecting tread pattern or modeling only circumferential grooves. Besides, the tire analysis has been mainly limited to static or steady state rolling analysis. In this paper, a transient dynamic analysis of a patterned tire rolling over a cleat with an explicit finite element program is presented. The patterned tire with detailed tread blocks is modeled by a systematic mesh generation procedure, in which tire body and tread pattern meshes are separately generated in the beginning and then both meshes are combined by the tie constraint method. The cleat impact analysis is conducted by using both the patterned tire and the smooth tire models to predict the cleat enveloping characteristics. It is seen that the analysis results of the patterned tire model are in a good agreement with the experimental results.
A three-dimensional multi-phase flow is simulated around a smooth tire. This simulation is conducted by solving Navier-Stokes equation with a k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model. The numerical calculations are carried out by modeling a multi-phase free surface flow mixed with air and water at the inlet. The numerical solutions show an intuitively resonable behavior of water around a moving tire. The calculated pressure around the tire surface along the moving direction is presented. The moving velocities of the tire are chosen to be 30, 40, 60, and 70 km/h. The numerically simulated pressures around the tire are compared with existing experimental data. The comparison shows a new possible tool of analyzing a hydroplaning phenomenon for an automobile tire by means of a computational fluid dynamics.
In domestic replacement tire market, imported tires are increasing condinuously. Because there is no institute officially investigating tire safety and performance, domestic drivers can be exposed to defective tires with no regulations. In this study we performed investigation of replacement tire market status and amount of imported tires. Over $90\%$ of imported tires are for passenger car and the number of total imported tires is increasing in recent years. Low price tires imported from Southeast Asia and China are selected to evaluate quality level. Basic inspection, indoor test, outdoor test, material test are conducted to evaluate the selected tires and compared with tires of domestic maker. From test results quality level of the selected tires could be found.
